Locked On Cougars - Daily Podcast On BYU Cougars Football & Basketball

Can Kalani Sitake’s new contract extension truly reshape the trajectory of BYU football, or is university leadership still holding the program back? Jake Hatch dives into the layers behind Sitake’s record-breaking deal with Brigham Young University—a fourth extension in as many years—and what it signals for the Cougars’ ambitions in the Power Four era. While Sitake publicly pushed for the deal, Jake Hatch questions why BYU administration hesitated and why Athletic Director Brian Santiago only granted Sitake the “capability”—not the authority—to fully control the football program, drawing a sharp contrast with legendary coach LaVell Edwards’ era. With BYU aiming for national relevance, is it enough to say Sitake can lead, or must he be empowered to make critical decisions on staffing, resources, and NIL strategy? The episode explores how substantial raises and multi-year contracts for assistants, plus a major influx of NIL funding, could elevate BYU’s recruiting and retention—but only if leadership evolves with the sport’s demands.

On the basketball front, AJ Dybantsa’s second-half heroics ignite BYU’s dramatic comeback win over Clemson at Madison Square Garden. Jake Hatch spotlights Dybantsa’s dominant 22-point half, surpassing Clemson’s entire team output, and unpacks his growing case as a future NBA top draft pick. The buzzer-beating three from Rob Wright not only secures the win but highlights the Cougars’ resilience, camaraderie, and next-level potential as Big 12 play approaches. Bench strategy, defensive adjustments, and the promising chemistry between Dybantsa and teammates hint at a season with serious national implications.

Wrapping up, Jake Hatch scrutinizes Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark’s lackluster defense of BYU’s College Football Playoff snub, calling attention to conference politics and missed opportunities to advocate for deserving programs. With rivals like the SEC and ACC boldly lobbying for their teams, does the Big 12 risk falling behind by not vigorously supporting its own? Listeners are left to ponder whether BYU can break through administrative obstacles on and off the field—or if their path to glory demands stronger backing from conference leadership. Don’t miss this comprehensive analysis of BYU’s power plays and the potential roadblocks ahead in both football and basketball.

Utah stuns the college sports world by securing a historic $500 million private equity investment from OTRO Partners, raising urgent questions about the future of NCAA athletic funding. Will this gamble give the Utes a competitive edge, or open the door to new financial risks? Jake Hatch contrasts Utah’s aggressive cash infusion with BYU’s debt-averse, donor-driven approach, highlighting how BYU insists on upfront financing for facilities and programs. The conversation dives into why schools might turn to private equity—are cash flow constraints and waning booster enthusiasm making this paradigm shift inevitable? Listeners get fresh insights into why BYU, much like Texas Tech, is doubling down on tradition and control, while Utah’s deal may become a test case for conferences nationwide.

Notre Dame’s drama with the ACC takes center stage as whispers of Big 12 expansion accelerate. Could the Fighting Irish bring their massive brand and fan base to the Big 12, instantly boosting credibility and media leverage? Jake Hatch explores Notre Dame’s strategic crossroads: Will they join a “big pond” like the Big Ten or SEC, or opt for big-fish status in the Big 12? The analysis covers the potential market impact, how NBC’s exclusive contract and preferential playoff treatment complicate negotiations, and why Big 12 leadership might be quietly positioning themselves to make a play. Hatch also evaluates whether Notre Dame’s historic independence could truly mesh with a conference system—if that means a long-awaited football trip to Provo, should BYU fans root for it?

Turning to basketball, BYU faces Clemson in the spotlight of Madison Square Garden’s Jimmy V Classic—a final, critical test before Big 12 play begins. Hatch highlights BYU’s top-ten AP ranking, statistical edge over Clemson, and the intriguing twist of returned missionaries on both rosters. Could BYU’s up-tempo attack overwhelm Clemson’s grit on the biggest non-conference stage? Hatch unpacks coach Kevin Young’s approach, reflects on lessons from last year’s schedule and roster challenges, and investigates how injuries (like Dawson Baker’s) shift the Cougars’ rotation. The discussion sets up BYU’s readiness for a fiercely competitive Big 12, referencing rising rivals like Arizona and Iowa State, and identifies key benchmarks for the weeks ahead.

Don’t miss this episode’s riveting breakdown of major capital influxes, conference realignment drama, and the games that promise to define BYU’s season.

The BYU Cougars’ latest College Football Playoff snub exposes deep flaws in the CFP committee and power-conference bias. Jake Hatch breaks down BYU’s season-long pursuit of a playoff berth, analyzing how their 11-win campaign and the Big 12’s limited representation were steamrolled by shifting committee rules and questionable treatment of championship losses. Debate heats up as Hatch compares BYU’s résumé to those of Oklahoma, Miami, Alabama, and Notre Dame, pointing to moving goalposts and rules that seem to favor SEC and Big Ten teams. With playoff slots worth millions, Hatch highlights how financial incentives and lack of transparency further erode trust in college football’s postseason system.

Notre Dame intensifies the drama by opting out of the bowl season entirely after being snubbed for a playoff spot. This last-minute change sets the stage for BYU to square off against Georgia Tech in the highly anticipated Pop-Tarts Bowl at Camping World Stadium. Hatch discusses the ramifications of Notre Dame’s exit—not just for BYU and bowl organizers, but for the future of college football as other programs could contemplate following suit. He reviews Big 12 penalties for postseason opt-outs and notes the competitive drive of BYU and Georgia Tech, emphasizing how bowl games remain crucial for athletes and fans, even as the playoff expansion looms.

Turning to the matchup itself, Hatch previews a clash of physical, run-heavy teams as BYU and Georgia Tech bring power football and versatile offenses to Orlando. Standout players like Haynes King for Georgia Tech and Bear Bachmeier and LJ Martin for BYU are set to make this a must-watch contest. Hatch covers concerns about NFL Draft-related opt-outs and transfer portal moves that could reshape each roster before kickoff, while also reflecting on bowl travel tradition and the opportunity for fans to turn disappointment into destination viewing. Is this electric matchup a chance for BYU to prove the committee wrong on a national stage?

With the CFP landscape in chaos and bowl game traditions under scrutiny, Hatch offers a passionate outlook and invites listeners to join the All Access insider group for deeper analysis and exclusive content. How will BYU respond to adversity—and can the Cougars set a new precedent for postseason success?

The dream season hit a brick wall in Arlington, Texas, as the BYU Football program suffered a devastating 34-7 blowout loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Big 12 Championship Game. Despite sporting an absolutely remarkable 11-2 overall record, this performance was a gut-punch that leaves the program—and the entire fanbase—reeling. We dedicate this episode to a raw, no-holds-barred post-mortem analysis of what went wrong in this title-deciding game.

We start by dissecting the complete offensive collapse. BYU's potent attack, which had carried them through the regular season, managed a mere seven points against a tenacious Red Raiders defense. We look at the personnel decisions, the scheme failures, and the mounting pressure that led to stalled drives and critical turnovers. Was it the stage that was too big? Did Head Coach struggle to adjust to Texas Tech’s blitz packages? We break down the film to find the painful answers.

The Fallout: CFP Chances Dwindle Despite 11-2 Record

The result wasn't just a loss; it was an execution of their College Football Playoff (CFP) aspirations. The Cougars entered the game knowing a win would guarantee a spot among the elite four. Now, with a decisive 34-7 defeat on their resume, the conversation shifts from getting in to did they show enough over the course of the season? We analyze the damage this Big 12 Championship Game result does to their standing, especially compared to other Power Five contenders. How will the CFP Committee view an 11-2 team with one blowout loss vs. teams with fewer games or similar records?

We also turn our attention to the unsung heroes of the game—the BYU defense—which played valiantly despite being consistently put in terrible field positions. While the scoreboard shows a wide margin, the defense kept the Cougars within striking distance early on. We give credit where it's due and discuss which players cemented their legacy as true Cougars warriors this season, regardless of the final outcome.

Moving Forward: Bowl Game and Big 12 Future

What happens now? We look ahead to the bowl game selection and what it means for the senior class. More importantly, we discuss the necessary adjustments that need to be made this offseason to ensure that next time the BYU Football program reaches the Big 12 Championship, they are mentally and physically prepared to seal the deal. This loss stings, but it also provides a clear blueprint for improvement as a new force in the Big 12 Conference.

Don't miss this crucial episode of LOCKED ON COUGARS as we process the defeat, evaluate the season’s impressive 11-2 record, and determine what the future holds for the program's quest for CFP relevance.

BYU Football faces its defining moment as the Cougars prepare to battle Texas Tech for the Big 12 championship in a sold-out AT&T Stadium. A win not only secures BYU its first Big 12 title but could catapult them into the College Football Playoff, challenging a system that’s underestimated their breakthrough season. Can Kalani Sitake’s team seize this generational opportunity and force the playoff committee to reconsider BYU’s national standing?

Jake Hatch spotlights the historic significance of this matchup—BYU’s chance to establish itself as a true Big 12 power just three seasons after joining the league. He analyzes the 30,000-foot stakes surrounding the Big 12 title game, comparing BYU’s journey to previous giants like Penn State and reflecting on the electric atmosphere expected in Arlington. Key matchups include Bear Bachmeier versus Behren Morton and LJ Martin versus Cameron Dickey, with reinforcements like Sione Moa and Justin Kirkland set to boost BYU’s defense. Will returning stars provide the x-factor needed for an upset?

Recognition for the program pours in, as Sitake earns Big 12 Coach of the Year and LJ Martin captures Offensive Player of the Year honors. Bachmeier’s Offensive Freshman of the Year award highlights BYU’s talent pipeline, with Bruce Mitchell, Jack Kelly, and Tanner Wall all named to the All-Big 12 first team. Jake Hatch details how player development and a robust recruiting pipeline are fueling a new era for the Cougars, making them a force for years to come.

Off the field, BYU’s reported $10–$15 million NIL investment raises questions about compliance, competitiveness, and the controversial College Sports Commission agreement. Will BYU navigate NCAA politics without compromising its future? Jake Hatch weighs in on the risks, the poker-like dynamics between Power 4 programs, and the importance of retaining both talent and legal flexibility. With accolades rolling in and the national narrative shifting, Cougar Nation watches as BYU attempts to shatter expectations and write a new chapter in college football lore.

Big 12 heavyweights BYU and Texas Tech shake up the championship picture as powerhouse coach Kalani Sitake nearly exits for Penn State, triggering a wild flurry of NIL deals and university power plays. Is the Big 12’s new financial arms race redefining the path to playoff success, or will legacy programs like Baylor and Kansas State be left behind? The roundtable debates elite coaching moves, jaw-dropping staff salaries, and the explosive influence of boosters and collectives across the conference.

Locked On’s squad of insiders spotlights BYU’s dramatic retention saga, Texas Tech’s bold investments, and why schools like Colorado are facing multimillion-dollar deficits. The hosts question playoff selection criteria, analyze rivalry scheduling strategies, and ask whether the Big 12 committee made the right call in pitting BYU against Texas Tech. Can innovative fundraising and NIL strategies thrust these programs into national contention, or will conference politics hold them back?

BYU and Texas Tech collide on similar trajectories, staking their claim as the premier programs in the Big 12. Can Kalani Sitake’s loyalty to BYU—and Joey McGuire’s culture-driven rise at Texas Tech—help their squads overcome conference doubters and playoff snubs? Jake Hatch and Chris Level unpack how both schools’ high-profile coaching contract extensions and innovative NIL commitments are rewriting the expectations for success in college football. With the specter of Penn State’s heavy recruitment of Sitake and the ongoing “house settlement” revenue share negotiations, both programs send a clear message: they’re here to contend at the highest level and invest whatever it takes—on and off the field.

The hosts go deep on roster dynamics and tactical Xs and Os, spotlighting key playmakers like BYU’s LJ Martin and Bear Bachmeier, plus Texas Tech’s resilient quarterback Behren Morton, who’s battled through a fractured fibula to keep the Red Raiders on top. They break down the significance of “culture” over mere financial muscle, contrasting these teams’ homegrown chemistry against Big 12 and national programs that have fizzled despite deep pockets. Expect commentary on the art of recruiting, development, and the intangibles that turn good teams into true championship threats.

Matchups and momentum shift into focus as Jake Hatch and Chris Level analyze how BYU’s aggressive first-down blitzing—engineered by Jay Hill—forces opponents out of rhythm, and why both teams’ defensive approaches could dictate the game’s outcome. Will BYU’s offense spread the field with quick throws to playmakers like Chase Roberts and Jojo Phillips, or will the ground-and-pound attack featuring LJ Martin take center stage? On the Texas Tech sideline, Jacob Rodriguez’s wildcat packages and red zone creativity are under the microscope, especially after the Red Raiders’ earlier struggles inside the 20.

High stakes loom as AT&T Stadium gears up for a record-breaking crowd and a legacy-defining clash. Can BYU shake the specter of College Football Playoff politics and redeem last season’s snub, or will Texas Tech’s Dallas-Fort Worth roots, defensive discipline, and hostile environment secure a Big 12 title? Experience a comprehensive, insider breakdown of the most anticipated conference championship game of the year.

BYU and Texas Tech collide in a Big 12 Championship showdown loaded with playoff drama, conference pride, and the potential to send two teams to the College Football Playoff. Can Kalani Sitake’s decision to remain with the Cougars galvanize BYU for the biggest singular sporting event in school history? Or will the Red Raiders’ proven dominance and defensive toughness silence the blue and white once more? Drake Toll, Chris Level, and Jake Hatch deliver dynamic analysis and insider perspectives, highlighting the stakes that extend well beyond a simple title.

The hosts explore critical factors shaping this power-packed matchup, spotlighting BYU’s resilient red zone defense and the necessity for offensive creativity. The return of L.J. Martin and the possible reappearance of Sione Moa offer hope for BYU’s running game, while Bear Bachmeier’s growth as a true freshman quarterback could be a game-changer on the bright championship stage. For Texas Tech, consistency is king; a lockdown run defense and methodical execution—plus a focus on eliminating red zone woes—emerge as keys to victory. Can BYU flip the script with gadget plays and minimize turnovers enough to keep things competitive, or will Texas Tech simply keep doing what’s worked all season?

Beyond X’s and O’s, this episode considers the historical significance of this Big 12 Championship. Is this the biggest conference title game since Texas and Oklahoma’s Red River rematch, and how might national exposure, fanbases, and playoff pressure rewrite the league’s future? Jake Hatch stresses what a win means for BYU’s legacy, referencing their aspirations dating back to the 1984 national championship, while Chris Level weighs in on Texas Tech’s legit shot at national prominence—and the implications of possibly hosting a CFP game at AT&T Stadium on New Year’s Eve.

From roster controversies to dramatic coaching moves, millions in playoff revenue, and the potential for seismic shifts in college football’s power structure, Locked On Big 12 delivers must-listen analysis on every aspect of this title clash. Which team will seize the spotlight and reshape the destiny of the Big 12?

We break down the unprecedented deal that ensures Kalani Sitake remains the head coach of BYU Football, decisively turning back the high-profile pursuit by programs like Penn State. This isn't just about retaining a coach; it's about a foundational commitment to winning in the Big 12 Conference and beyond.

Sitake's new contract is a financial masterstroke, setting new benchmarks for coaching stability at BYU. We analyze the staggering, record-breaking salary that places him among the Big 12's highest earners. Crucially, we unpack the accompanying, massive commitment to the assistant coaching staff, ensuring BYU can attract and retain elite football minds—a non-negotiable factor for succeeding in the rigorous Big 12 schedule. This move demonstrates BYU’s dedication to competitive parity and long-term program excellence.

NIL Firepower: The Strategy to Dominate Big 12 Recruiting

The real game-changer? The guaranteed structure regarding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) funds. For the first time, BYU has publicly and financially cemented its commitment to a top-tier NIL strategy. We examine the specific guarantees in the contract that empower the BYU football program to compete directly with perennial powers for the nation's most coveted recruits. This NIL war chest is designed to not only attract five-star talent but also to retain current star players, protecting the roster from transfer portal raids fueled by rival SEC or Big Ten money. What does this mean for the transfer portal this offseason? We give you the inside track.

With the Cougars now settled in the Big 12, the focus shifts entirely to on-field performance. This contract is the strongest possible signal that the administration expects to contend immediately. We discuss the path to the Big 12 Championship and how this infusion of stability and financial power immediately alters the conference hierarchy. Can BYU, armed with this unprecedented contract, bypass the rebuilding phase and make a legitimate run at the College Football Playoff (CFP) in the expanded format?

Join us as we analyze the immediate recruiting impact, dissect the financial implications of the Sitake Contract, and forecast the future of the BYU Football program as it solidifies its position as an elite competitor. Don't miss our deep dive into the business of college football and how BYU just ensured their seat at the Big 12 top table. The BYU Cougars stand on the brink of history as Kalani Sitake’s future hangs in the balance and an epic Big 12 Championship matchup with Texas Tech approaches. Is BYU set to ride championship momentum under Sitake’s leadership, or will a whirlwind of coaching rumors and high-stakes negotiations distract the program from its national title ambitions? With unprecedented stakes on the field and off, Cougar Nation faces a pivotal moment that could define the next generation of BYU football.

Jake Hatch reveals exclusive insights into the drama surrounding Kalani Sitake, including Penn State’s genuine interest and how Sitake’s negotiations may impact his commitment to BYU. The podcast highlights the critical role of boosters and resource allocation, detailing how staffing, NIL funding, and recruiting strategy have become non-negotiable pillars for achieving sustained Power Four success. Listeners get a front-row seat to the leverage game between Sitake, BYU administrators, and outside suitors, all fighting for their best possible outcome as expectations surge amid the program’s Big 12 rise.

On the gridiron, BYU’s championship aspirations get a boost as Sione Moa and Justin Kirkland return to action. Their presence promises to energize both backfield and defensive line, addressing key vulnerabilities and potentially swinging the outcome against Texas Tech’s stout front seven. Jake Hatch breaks down roster management, offensive line improvements with names like Waylon Lapuaho, and why a healthy lineup could tip the scales in this generational showdown. The analysis explores how Sitake’s player-first mentality shapes team culture and why even postseason redshirt rules come into play for critical contributors.

With the Big 12 Championship game billing itself as BYU football’s biggest contest since 1984, the discussion asks: How will the team handle both unprecedented media scrutiny and on-field adversity? Is this the moment BYU returns to the college football elite? Jake Hatch offers a compelling look at legacy, pressure, and whether the Cougars can seize a rare shot at glory. Don’t miss this deep dive into the blue-and-white’s quest for hardware—and what it means for the future of the program and the faith-based mission it represents.
