Locked On Falcons - Daily Podcast On The Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are making a big bet on their offense being the strength of their roster and driver of their push to the playoffs in 2024. Host Aaron Freeman discusses why this is a worthwhile bet for the present and the future. But also expresses reservations about what happens if there are too many cracks in the foundation, which could throw a wrench in their plans to develop rookie QB Michael Penix long-term. He breaks down his long-time struggles with the air of complacency that hovers above the team, not only today but dating back over a decade to the beginning of Matt Ryan and former GM Thomas Dimitroff's times in Atlanta. Finally, he answer a listener question about the team's potential to be a Top 10 offense and does some projections for Bijan Robinson's potential statline in 2024. Atlanta Falcons rookie quarterback Michael Penix may have to rework his mechanics and footwork over the next two years sitting behind starter Kirk Cousins. Host Aaron Freeman and guest Luke Braun ( @LockedOnVikings ) discuss some of the issues that Penix will have to overcome in the coming years, including his age, injury history, and inaccuracy. Luke breaks down why Penix's biomechanics need to be reworked and whether or not two years is sufficient time to do so.

Later, they discuss the potential hallmarks of the new Falcons offense under new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. They discuss what Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell took from his time under Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams as a template for things Robinson may borrow. They break down the Rams, Vikings, and Falcons run scheme and how it impacts their dropback and play-action passing game. Finally, they discuss the "vibes" surrounding the new Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

New Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris will be bringing a different defensive scheme to the city. Host Aaron Freeman and guest Cody Alexander ( @MatchQuarters ) discuss some of the hallmarks of that defensive scheme. They discuss the different coverage philosophies that have led to Morris' success in recent years with the Los Angeles Rams. They also discuss what new wrinkles new Falcons defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake provide to old Morris staples.

Later, they discuss the impact of Aaron Donald on the Rams' defensive success and whether someone like Grady Jarrett can replicate that here in Atlanta. Finally, they discuss how the new scheme changes will impact some of the team's young players at all three levels of the defense.

Atlanta Falcons 2024 third-round draft choice Bralen Trice was their biggest addition to their edge room this offseason. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down his film and how he projects to the next level. He discusses how Trice profiles as a "pressure guy" rather than a sack artist due to his power rushing and low sack-conversion rates. He discusses where Trice has to improve as a technical rusher to take his game to the next level, along with how his ability to produce on special teams and against the run may hold the key to his early success. Later, he compares Trice to a pair of former Falcon edge-rushers and another NFL player to see if he has double-digit sack potential.

The Atlanta Falcons had their most productive pass rush in 20 years with 42 sacks in 2024 but lost a big chunk of that production this offseason. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down if the team can rely on their incoming draft class or incumbent veterans to pick up the slack. He looks at five years' worth of data to project what each of the team's top rookies: Ruke Orhorhoro, Bralen Trice, and Brandon Dorlus will produce. Later, he discusses whether or not the team will get increased production from key vets like Grady Jarrett, Arnold Ebiketie, Kaden Elliss, and Troy Andersen. Finally, Roman Tomashoff (@LockedonHuskies) joins him to take a deeper look at Trice. Part of the @LockedOnATL

The Atlanta Falcons will need to start the 2024 season fast to reach their postseason goals, and how they deploy quarterback Kirk Cousins during the preseason might impact that. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down the stats and numbers behind Kirk's annual September struggles and whether or not that is impacted by his preseason workload. He also breaks down a hypothetical trade where the Falcons could move Cousins this summer if rookie quarterback Michael Penix impresses, mirroring what happened with Philadelphia Eagles passers Sam Bradford and Carson Wentz back in 2016.

Later, he answers listener questions about the things defensive end Zach Harrison did at the end of the 2023 season that led to so much production down the stretch and why there isn't as much hype about Darnell Mooney's role within the Falcons offense.

The Atlanta Falcons' 2024 season is set up perfectly with their Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down how it features the offseason bets made by the Falcons involving the quarterback, offensive coordinator, and head coach. He breaks down the two opposing styles made by both teams to upgrade their quarterbacks this offseason, with the Falcons spending a lot of money on Kirk Cousins and the Steelers going cheap with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

Later, he discusses the expectations on new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson in contrast to former head coach and play-caller Arthur Smith, who is now calling plays for the Steelers. He also breaks down new head coach Raheem Morris' connects to Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin from their shared days in Tampa Bay to Tomlin's success in Pittsburgh over the past 17 years.

Secondly, Pitts got a chance to talk about his 5th year option being picked up. The team discussed Pitts’ mindset and the sense of urgency he has to play with this year. The Atlanta Falcons have several candidates to start at cornerback opposite A.J. Terrell. Host Aaron Freeman breaks down why he thinks Mike Hughes is the front-runner in the competition. He discusses whether or not Clark Phillips, Kevin King, or Antonio Hamilton Sr. will push him for that starting job.

Later, he discusses the team's expected defensive scheme changes under new defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake, looking at head coach Raheem Morris' defenses with the Los Angeles Rams in recent years. He discusses why the Falcons will be more of a bend-but-don't-break defense under Lake and why their lack of offseason investments make it hard to get excited about the direction of the defense as a whole. Finally, Roman Tomashoff ( @LockedonHuskies ) joins to share his insight into Lake from his days at the University of Washington, as well as former Huskies Kaleb McGary and King.
