The San Francisco Giants' new backup catcher has been one of the best hitters in baseball against left-handed pitching since 2019. Tom Murphy, who has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $8.25M deal with the SF Giants with a club option for a third year, is a lefty masher who's a perfect complement to Giants primary catcher Patrick Bailey. Murphy's main issue has been staying on the field. But when he's been out there, he's been a forced to be reckoned with against southpaws.
The ramifications are plentiful. First of all, the Giants' addition of Murphy—on a multiyear pact, no less—likely means it's the end of the line for Joey Bart with the SF Giants. Bart is importantly out of minor league options, meaning he can no longer be optioned without being exposed to waivers. The Giants' lack of faith in Bart has been evident for years, and their signing of Murphy seemingly seals his fate. Bart will likely be traded at some point before Opening Day. (He has little trade value, for what it's worth).
Blake Sabol will also feel the impact of this signing. Last season, because he was a Rule 5 selection, Sabol had the luxury of needing to stay in the majors all season or else be offered back to the Pirates. The SF Giants clearly wanted to avoid that scenario, so Sabol spent the entire season in MLB. Now that that's over, however, Sabol will have a full slate of minor league options. Meaning he likely becomes the Giants' third catcher, with the fact that he has three option years remaining being a huge plus. Sabol showed promise with the bat vs. RHP, and his framing was solid, but he needs to work on his ball blocking, which was a significant issue.

San Francisco Giants fans who watched Jung Hoo Lee's introductory press conference today by and large seemed to fall in love with the 25-year-old center fielder from Korea. Jung Hoo Lee made several opening remarks in English, including an excited "Let's go Giants!" at the end. Lee later coyly asked, "Handsome?" after he donned an SF Giants jersey and hat for the first time. The Giants signed Lee to a 6-year, $113 million contract with an opt-out after four years, and only time will tell if it pans out. But for now, Jung Hoo Lee made a great and refreshing impression on SF Giants fans desperate for players to grow attached to again.
Next are some Giants mailbag questions. Among the questions asked and answered on today's episode of Locked On Giants are:
What's your feeling about the likelihood the Giants land Yoshinobu Yamamoto?
What would your pivot moves be if Yamamoto goes somewhere else?
When do you think Yamamoto will sign?
With Jung Hoo Lee in the fold, would you like to see the Giants be aggressive and trade for Ha-Seong Kim to corner the South Korean market? Or should they wait for him next year as a free agent?
Who’s the odd man out in the OF. Who do you think is the likeliest to get moved? I personally think they want to keep Austin Slater just for platoon reasons but maybe the new coaching staff isn’t interested in that. What are your thoughts?

San Francisco Giants fans can finally take a deep breath. Jung Hoo Lee has passed his physical, and he is officially a member of the SF Giants. It's by far the largest free-agent contract finalized in the Farhan Zaidi era, (though Correa's $350M deal that ultimately fell through would've been more than three times as large). Lee is unproven at the major league level, of course, but brings a tantalizing blend of youth and a skill set that the Giants have been sorely lacking to the lineup. He makes a ton of contact, uses the whole field, doesn't strike out, runs well, has above-average range in center, and has a plus arm. Jung Hoo Lee can opt out after the fourth year of his deal with the Giants.
Meanwhile, SF Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and former catcher Buster Posey spoke on the failed Shohei Ohtani pursuit. They spoke candidly about their efforts, with Zaidi stating that ownership was agreeable to the exact terms he ultimately signed with the Dodgers. Posey said that, in his attempted recruits of free agents, he's consistently run into an issue with players, and even players' wives, being concerned about the state of San Francisco. Posey indicated that it doesn't matter whether those claims are fair or not, because "perception is reality."
Meanwhile, the LA Dodgers officially introduced Shohei Ohtani today, and they also are reportedly finalizing a trade for ace pitcher Tyler Glasnow (who's had a very hard time staying healthy, however). The trade is contingent on Glasnow signing and extension with LA, and all parties seem to believe the trade will be completed. The Giants must continue to shop aggressively this offseason to not only improve their team to get them back into the playoffs, but to keep the fans interested and entertained. Despite missing out on Ohtani, so far so good with the Giants' official signing of Jung Hoo Lee.

The San Francisco Giants desperately needed to sign some players, especially in the wake of Shohei Ohtani electing to sign with the Dodgers on a ridiculous 10-year, $700 million contract. Per reports, they've done just that, inking 25-year-old Korean star Jung Hoo Lee to a six-year deal worth $113 million.
Lee is exactly the kind of offensive and defensive player the Giants need. He's young, he's athletic. He has incredible bat-to-ball skills. He's a plus runner with above-average range and a plus arm. He immediately brings intrigue to a stale SF Giants team.
In other news, Shohei Ohtani signed with the LA Dodgers. It wasn't exactly a shock, until everyone saw the contract. And even then, people weren't truly shocked until they saw the structure of the contract: $680 million of the $700 million is deferred, meaning Shohei Ohtani will only make $20 million total in his 10-year deal with the devil. Er, we mean, the Dodgers.

The San Francisco Giants have missed out on yet another superstar in free agency. And it's an absolute nightmare scenario for SF Giants fans everywhere. Today, Shohei Ohtani announced on his personal Instagram that he would be joining the Giants' greatest rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was quickly reported that the deal with Ohtani was for a stunning 10 years and $700 million—albeit with "unprecedented" deferrals that lessen the present day value by an unknown amount, while simultaneously lowering the Dodgers' financial "burden."
The Giants, meanwhile, must pivot in a major way. It's yet another disastrous outcome for a team and its fans that are all too used to this. But there are still some very intriguing free agents out there for the SF Giants to sign. Most notably, 25-year-old Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto feels like a must-sign, but competition will be exceptionally fierce. It remains to be seen if the Giants can salvage their offseason after losing out on another top player—the best in baseball—to their archenemies no less.

The San Francisco Giants enjoyed a solid run of success on the pitching side of their team ever since Gabe Kapler was hired prior to the 2020 season. Kevin Gausman, Logan Webb, Camilo Doval, Carlos Rodón are a few examples of success, and they're far from the only ones. With that in mind, how big of a loss is the departure of pitching coach Andrew Bailey to the Boston Red Sox? Not to mention the loss of director of pitching Brian Bannister to the White Sox.
Locked On Giants and Locked On Red Sox discuss numerous topics, including the change to the MLB schedule that now sees all NL and AL teams play each other at least once a year. For Giants fans, this means that every other year the team will play in every American League stadium. It was a great change in a lot of ways, and means SF Giants fans get way more opportunities watch their favorite team play at historic stadiums like Fenway Park. There were also some drawbacks, but the positives outweighed them.
All of this is discussed under the shadow of Shohei Ohtani's free agency, which as of yet has not reached a conclusion. For more about the Giants' and Red Sox's offseason, be sure to check out yesterday's edition of Locked On Giants in which Ben and Gabby discuss all things Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and what the SF Giants and Sox must accomplish this winter.

There are a ton of similarities between the San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox. The SF Giants find themselves big-game hunting once again, with Shohei Ohtani at the top of their list. The Red Sox may be out on Ohtani, but pitching is their biggest need and Yoshinobu Yamamoto tops the Sox's wishlist.
Locked On Giants and Locked On Red Sox discuss the similarities between their two historic franchises, and what each must do to achieve their similar offseason goals. Both the SF Giants and the Red Sox have big bad bully rivals in the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Yanks just acquired Juan Soto, and the Dodgers are considered the favorites to sign Ohtani.
But don't sleep on the Giants with Ohtani. They were finalists for his services last time around before he ultimately chose the Angels, and there are legitimate arguments to make that LA might not be the best fit for him. Does Ohtani really want to take the easy road? Perhaps. But he has a deep admiration for Buster Posey and likes to be challenged. What better way than to join the team that rivals the team with the game's biggest stars?

Juan Soto is on a trajectory to be one of the greatest hitters of all time. He's a generational offensive talent. And yet, he wasn't a fit for the San Francisco Giants. At least not right now. Not with one year of team control remaining. Not when the SF Giants have spent years building up their farm system to the point where it actually looks ready to produce impact MLB talent for the first time in a decade. Imagine blowing all of that up for one year of a great player. Yes, the present matters, but that's what free agency is for.
And last we checked, almost all of this year's free agents are still unsigned. That's because Shohei Ohtani's free agency is holding up the entire market. The San Francisco Giants appear to at least have a seat at the table as a decision is likely imminent. Giants fans are used to heartbreak, and it certainly wouldn't be surprising to see Ohtani sign elsewhere, but at least they're in the mix. The SF Giants also depart the Winter Meetings as one of the teams considered to be a finalist for 25-year-old Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
All in all, these 2023 Winter Meetings in Nashville were a total dud. At the time of this recording, even the Soto trade hadn't officially happened (but it did afterwards). Patience. The slow drip that has been the 2023 offseason will soon yield into a frenzy of activity, and it all starts at the top with Ohtani. Buckle up, Giants fans. Sooner or later, the dam is going to break.

The Winter Meetings have been a dud so far, but Dodgers manager Dave Roberts sure spiced things up in the middle of the afternoon. In a meeting with reporters, Roberts spoke freely and openly about the team's pursuit of Shohei Ohtani, was was surprising considering it was reported weeks ago that Ohtani wanted talks to be private and that any leaks of information would be held against teams. At first it seemed that Roberts must have been cleared to speak so openly about the pursuit, but then came a text message that darkened Roberts' expression, a huddling with PR staff, and the Dodgers' GM stating that he was "surprised" by Roberts' comments and that he refused to confirm the team had even met with Ohtani.
In San Francisco Giants-related news, Farhan Zaidi and Bob Melvin continued to convey that the Giants are shopping at the tippy top of the free agent class. This echoes what we have heard from SF Giants broadcasters Mike Krukow and Dave Flemming in recent days. The Giants—unlike Dave Roberts, apparently—are not allowed to publicly comment on free agents, and they wouldn't even if they could. But it's clear that San Francisco is in search of star talent and would love to land Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto—or both.
A fascinating development happened after Dave Roberts spilled the beans and talked about the Dodgers' recent meeting with Ohtani. The New York and Los Angeles-based media turned on Ohtani and sided with Roberts and LA. We guess that shouldn't be too surprising, but it was a bad look for those media members who applauded Roberts and criticized Ohtani for having a preference for privacy.

The San Francisco Giants may find themselves at the forefront of the Yoshinobu Yamamoto sweepstakes. The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser, as trustworthy a beat reporter as there is, reported yesterday that two rival teams that have had interest in Yamamoto believe the SF Giants "have the edge" for his services. Yamamoto, who's just 25 years old, has three plus pitches and would be a major get for the Giants. Yamamoto is expected to land a deal in the $200-300 million range.
But the biggest free agent of all, of course, remains Shohei Ohtani. And there's speculation that Ohtani was in San Francsico meeting with the Giants on Saturday. A photograph was taken of SF Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, manager Bob Melvin, and Buster Posey in very nice clothes leaving Oracle Park on Saturday. To make matters even more interesting, Ohtani followed Logan Webb on Instagram on Monday, just Ohtani's 177th follow and one of the few non-Angels players he follows.
SF Giants broadcasters Dave Flemming and Mike Krukow have also talked a big game in recent days in local media appearances. Both Flemming (on The Athletic's TK Show) and Krukow (on KNBR) spoke of the San Francisco Giants' lofty intentions and huge ambition this offseason. Krukow went so far as to say the Giants would make three major moves in the next 10 days—and he said that last Tuesday. Only time will tell if any of this actually materializes into something Giants fans can truly get excited about.
