Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

Logan Webb is going to be here for a while. Today, the San Francisco Giants announced that they have agreed to a five-year, $90 million extension with their homegrown ace. The extension doesn't start until next season, so the Giants now have Webb under contract for six seasons counting this one.

Webb broke out with the SF Giants in a big way in 2021. He followed it up in 2022 with almost equally good production, although there was a somewhat concerning decrease in strikeout rate and velocity. He's been a bit shaky to begin the 2023 season, but clearly the Giants are not concerned. The deal on first glance looks like a win for the team, for Webb, and the fans.

In other news, Roberto Pérez had season-ending shoulder surgery. It's a tough break for him and the Giants, who were counting on him to be an important part of their catching mix this year. Joey Bart and Blake Sabol are the current catchers, with Gary Sánchez in Triple-A with an opt-out clause if he's not in the majors by May 1.

The San Francisco Giants have a 4.71 ERA and 4.73 FIP. Much has been made of their offense's inconsistency and tendency to strike out, but overall the Giants have graded out as a significantly above-average offensive team. The run prevention, however, has not been there. The Giants allowed 10 runs in their loss to the Dodgers last night.

The good news is that their biggest problem is simply that they've allowed too many homers, seemingly at an unsustainably high level. The SF Giants' team K% and BB% as a pitching staff is strong, but they're last in the majors in HR/FB ratio, which is something that does not stabilize quickly. The Giants' xFIP, which predicts ERA based on normal BABIP and HR/FB, is among the best in MLB, which is encouraging.

Darin Ruf is back with the Giants, and he hammered a double off the left-center field wall in his first at-bat, and it came against Clayton Kershaw. The Giants lost Bryce Johnson to a concussion after he slammed into the center field wall making a heroic catch last night. Michael Conforto also exited the game with calf tightness.

Managing in the big leagues isn't easy. Every move is scrutinized, and that was very apparent when Gabe Kapler made what looked like a major mistake the other day allowing Ross Stripling to face Salvador Perez in a huge spot late in the game. However, in last night's win over the Dodgers, the San Francisco Giants' manager pulled all the right strings and the team responded with a satisfying 5-0 win over the rival Dodgers.

It couldn't have been easy to pull Alex Wood when he was one out away from qualifying for a win. But it was absolute the right move for the Giants as a team, with Wood historically struggling the third time through the order, a dangerous righty coming up to the plate, and a solid righty in Jakob Junis waiting in the bullpen. Kapler went to Junis, who got out of the inning with the tying run on second base. Later in the game, Kapler made another correct move going to lefty Scott Alexander for a lefty hitter with the bases loaded and one out, and the SF Giants clinging to a 2-0 lead.

Alexander did his job. He got a weak ground ball in front of the mound and made a great barehanded play and flip home for the force out. He then struck out the next hitter to strand the bases loaded. Offensively, Joc Pederson got things going in the first with a two-run double, and David Villar and Brandon Crawford later homered to give the Giants some breathing room. So far, the SF Giants' defense has not been a problem and was solid against last night as the Giants got a much-needed victory over LA.

The San Francisco Giants didn't just lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers last night—they were embarrassed, again, by their rivals. The Giants-Dodgers rivalry has been one-sided since the Dodgers defeated the SF Giants in the NLDS in 2021. Last night, the San Francisco Giants lost 9-1 despite having their ace, Logan Webb, on the mound.

A couple of trends have emerged for the Giants. Their strikeout rate as an offense is the highest by far of any major league team. The good news is that it's likely not going to stay that way, since several players are simply striking out at a much higher rate than their career averages, and we should expect them to regress toward the mean. Also, the Giants have managed to be among the league leaders in key offensive metrics like wRC+, wOBA, OBP, SLG, and ISO despite the high K rate. However, in addition to the strikeouts, the run scoring has been very inconsistent.

On the pitching side, the only things holding the Giants back are a high HR/FB ratio and a low left-on-base percentage—two metrics that are slow to stabilize, particularly the HR/FB ratio. The Giants led the majors with the fewest home runs allowed in each of the last two seasons, but this year so far they're near the top. That very likely won't last, and their other numbers (like K%, BB%, and GB%) look strong.

The San Francisco Giants needed a win—badly. After suffering a demoralizing and perhaps preventable loss on Saturday, the Giants were in danger of being swept at home against the inferior Kansas City Royals. Tony DeSclafani made another fantastic start, but the Giants' offense was absolutely shut down through seven innings, and things were looking grim. But Bryce Johnson, Wilmer Flores, and Michael Conforto staged a miracle two-out rally that turned a 1-0 deficit into an uplifting 3-1 win for the Giants, who avoided the sweep and improved to 4-5 on the young season.

The previous game's loss was dejecting and seemingly avoidable. Ross Stripling was used in relief of Sean Manaea, who was excellent, despite the fact that he had allowed three homers in his final exhibition start against the A's and three home runs in his regular season debut. The Giants led 5-1 when Stripling entered, and he surrendered another home run to the first batter he faced. Gabe Kapler inexplicably allowed Stripling to face Salvador Perez as the tying run despite the Giants' high-leverage relievers being rested. Almost predictably, Perez homered—the eighth Stripling has allowed over his previous 11+ innings—and the Royals had tied the game and later won.

Several roster moves happened over the weekend. The SF Giants signed Darin Ruf, who was DFA'd by the Mets a couple of weeks ago, to a minors deal. The Ruf trade already looked like a total heist, but now it's just plain hilarious that Ruf is now back with the Giants despite the Mets paying him a salary this year. In other news, Roberto Pérez sustained a serious shoulder injury that sent him to the 60-day IL. Austin Wynns was selected in his place. Blake Sabol has struggled to hit thus far, and with Joey Bart on a rehab assignment and Gary Sánchez also in Triple-A, we may see more movement at the catcher position sooner rather than later.

The story of the 2023 San Francisco Giants offense so far has been pretty simple: strikeouts, walks, and homers. Those are what's known as the "three true outcomes," but will that be a defining characteristic for the SF Giants all season? It's too early to tell, and one thing is certain: they won't keep striking out at this high of a rate.

Players like Michael Conforto and Joc Pederson, each striking out about 40% of the time despite career K rates of around 24%, are skewing the numbers and are certain to make more contact as they continue to get at-bats. The Giants also have high-contact players such as Wilmer Flores and Thairo Estrada on the roster. They're certainly a power and patience team, but don't expect this many strikeouts moving forward.

Getting to other mailbag questions:  Is there any chance we see Gary Sanchez on the Major League roster? Do you think the Giants made a mistake letting go of Jason Vosler? When Joey Bart, Mitch Haniger, and Austin Slater return it’s almost certain that Matt Beaty goes down. Who are the other two players you project to be removed from the 26-man roster? Jo Adell for Joey Bart? Both guys could probably use a change of scenery. Do you think David Villar is being slept on? Career 125 OPS+ in the majors but it feels like he's not appreciated by a lot of fans.

It's not just chicks who dig the long ball. All San Francisco Giants fans have surely been thrilled by the team's power display to start the 2023 season. The Giants have hit 15 home runs through their first six games, the most they've ever had to start a season. They've been held down completely in a couple of their losses, but that happens in this crazy game of baseball. It's the big picture that matters more, and the big picture is looking pretty positive for the SF Giants after they completed their first road trip.

The Giants went through two good American League teams, in tough ballparks to pitch, and ended up with a .500 opening road trip. Any team would take that going through the Yankees and White Sox on the road. The Giants' early-season strikeout rate is high, but that should come down as the season goes on. Their walk rate is also among the best in the league, and their barrel rate entering today was second in MLB. That number will surely improve after their five-homer performance today.

Alex Wood wasn't at his best today, just like Logan Webb wasn't at his best yesterday. The Giants' hot-and-cold offense, especially hot in this series, has masked some subpar pitching thus far. But all of this is early season noise, not necessarily something to get too worked up about. But it's hard to fake the kind of power display the Giants have been putting on overall this week. We'll see how well they're able to keep it up moving forward.

Logan Webb got hit around today as the San Francisco Giants continued their early season trend of losing every other game. While that's not exactly what you want to see from a team that finished exactly .500 last year, it's too early to read into such trends. Webb's strikeout rate and walk rate so far this season are very encouraging; he's just been hurt by an unsustainably high average on balls in play and rate of stranding his own baserunners. Those numbers will improve, which should shift his 6.55 ERA down closer to his low-3.00s FIP (and even lower xFIP).

Getting to some mailbag questions ... With the Orioles calling up Grayson Rodriguez, do you expect the SF Giants to call up Kyle Harrison and or Casey Schmitt by the end of the month? Will homers make an appearance again this season? Or did we just use up our allowance for another 5 series? Does Ross Stripling have a history of starting slowly? Hoping maybe he's still working out the kinks?

Barring any injuries or poor performance of our current roster, when do you think we’d see Schmitt called up and at what position? And finally: What is your "way to early" season review of the San Francisco Giants so far?

Well, well, well. Tough day for those who thought the San Francisco Giants' offense was cooked after two shutout losses in New York. And tough day for though who thought SF Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani was done for after five injury-plagued starts in 2022. The Giants blasted seven home runs and DeSclafani looked like the best version of himself in a 12-3 Giants win.

Baseball is a funny game. One day the Giants can get shut out and look horrible, and literally the next day they can tie the record for the most home runs in a game in franchise history. Which version of the Giants is the real one? It's the combination. Overall, despite the ups and downs, the SF Giants' offense on the whole looks roughly as expected through four games.

DeSclafani's outing was beyond encouraging. He had excellent command of all of his pitches. They were moving well and featuring strong velocity. DeSclafani is under contract with the SF Giants through 2024, so getting him back to the 2021 version of himself, which is exactly how he looked yesterday, would be a great sign for this year and next.

The San Francisco Giants played a pretty ugly season-opening series against the Yankees. The Giants were completely shut down twice, and in their one win, they nearly let a three-run ninth-inning lead slip away. The Giants' offense struck out in 37% of their plate appearances in the series, which is just too high—but it's also something that won't last.

The unsustainability of the Giants' offensive struggles are discussed. When all is said and done, the Giants will strike out roughly 22-25% of the time this year, nothing close to the 37% we saw over the weekend. Putting more balls in play will translate to more hits and more home runs.

Camilo Doval needs to work on dealing with the pitch clock, as we saw in his first appearance. Doval was charged with two automatic balls to begin at-bats, which didn't pair well with his subpar command he had that day. Doval looked like he was going to cost the Giants the win, but got a well-timed 6-4-3 double play to end the game in torturous fashion. In other news, Joey Bart was placed on the 10-day IL with a mid-back sprain.
