How will the San Francisco Giants behave during the 2022-23 offseason? Will the Giants do more of the same, piecing together a roster and waiting for top prospects like Marco Luciano, Kyle Harrison, and others to develop? Or will the Giants finally make some impact signings that have been non-existent during Farhan Zaidi's era as Giants president of baseball operations?
What is a reasonable prediction for Joey Bart's numbers next year? The Giants' catcher has been much better since being recalled from the minors in early July, so which version of Bart should we expect next year? Probably somewhere in the middle. Bart's strikeout rate remains elevated, so it's probably reasonable to expect closer to a league average batting average and OBP, with above-average power. That would make him a quality player but not quite a star.
What's going on with Mike Yastrzemski? He's been struggling for months. Should the Giants try to replace Yaz with someone from the minors? The answer is that it's reasonable to think that, but they don't have any obvious replacements ready to take over. That's a problem with the state of the organization. They don't spend big on talent, but their farm system has also been slow to develop impact talent. Same goes for the Giants' Tommy La Stella problem.

Evan Longoria turned back the clock and looked like he was 26, not 36, in the San Francisco Giants' roller-coaster win on Sunday. The Giants needed the win badly, and Longoria stepped up to the challenge. He nearly hit a home run, and then later on he hit his first grand slam in almost 10 years. He made multiple sparkling defensive plays. He was the best player on the field, and the question must be asked: will the SF Giants bring him back next year even though they don't have to?
Longoria has a $13M club option for 2023. It comes with a $5M buyout. So in reality, the Giants have to make an $8M decision on whether or not to retain Longoria in 2023, which would be the final year of his deal. He will be 37 years old for all of next year. Despite his age and the fact that he's been injury prone for the last couple of years, Longoria has been very productive when he's been on the field. He is a stabilizing force defensively and has hit well to boot. There's no obvious replacement for him in the minor leagues for next season (but after that there should be ... hopefully).
LaMonte Wade Jr.'s decision to lay down a sacrifice bunt in the top of the 11th is discussed. The bunt ended up working out, but was it a smart play? Lastly, the Giants' record and position in the wild card hunt are discussed. The Giants remain on the fringes of the race but they're technically still in it with 41 games remaining.

San Francisco Giants outfielder Joc Pederson has reportedly been taking ground balls at first base—but why? Brandon Belt is under contract for 2022 but then is set to reach free agency. It's been a disappointing season for Belt, who has dealt with injuries and generally been a non-factor at the plate. Pederson has been good in his platoon role, but isn't a great defender in the outfield. It's certainly possible that Belt could see more time at DH, Pederson could play first, and an outfielder could be added to the roster.
Heliot Ramos, perhaps not coincidentally, will reportedly be in Colorado on the taxi squad. Does that mean he's getting called up? Should the SF Giants start playing their younger players more. The Giants have numerous struggling veterans, including Belt, but perhaps most obviously Tommy La Stella, who's been a net negative to the Giants this season. He can't really play the field or run, and hasn't even been able to hit well even though he's mostly the designated hitter. Could his time with the Giants be coming to an end?
Is there anything to look forward to next season or is it all doom and gloom? Even though this season has been disappointing for the Giants and their best player in Carlos Rodón is likely not going to be back next year, there is reason for hope in 2023. Logan Webb, Joey Bart, Thairo Estrada, and Camilo Doval look like core pieces moving forward, and their prospects are a year closer to the majors. Kyle Harrison looks like a potential future ace, and Marco Luciano is finally back from his back injury. We should see those guys in the majors in the next year or two.

The San Francisco Giants had a great opportunity to get greedy against the D-backs after winning the first two games of the series and turning to Carlos Rodón and Logan Webb in the last two. But the bullpen wasted a late-inning lead on Wednesday night and Webb got hit around on Thursday, and this feel-good stretch of baseball for the Giants turned into something far uglier. Yes, indeed, the SF Giants are who we thought they were. They are what their record says they are: a .500 team.
The ugliness was on full display in the losses. There was bad defense, with Joc Pederson committing a crucial error and Mike Yastrzemski making an ill-advised throw from the outfield. There was bad baserunning, with Yastrzemski, who had entered as a pinch runner, getting picked off in a big situation. There were more bullpen woes for a Giants team that led the majors in ERA last season, as Dom Leone continued his miserable month-plus. Tommy La Stella continued to be ineffective at the plate.
The Giants' present and future is discussed. The Giants are old and slow. Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt can't move well, and it has cost them numerous times this season. Neither is guaranteed a spot on next year's team. Belt has been a big disappointment in 2022 after emerging as the "Captain" last season. He bunted foul for a strikeout down by five runs with two on, two out, and two strikes late in the game. In other news, Luis González was optioned and Zack Littell was added. They were always going to get back to 13 pitchers and González was one of the few guys with options and had been struggling mightily.

UNBELIEVABLE! The San Francisco Giants got their second walk-off home run in three days last night, thanks to two-out magic from Thairo Estrada and Brandon Crawford. Estrada was the hero on Sunday, hitting a two-run homer with one out in the ninth. Yesterday, the Giants looked destined for a super frustrating 1-0 loss after there were two outs and nobody on in the last inning. But Estrada, who took a close pitch and the home plate umpire appeared close to calling him out, delivered for the SF Giants again and Crawford finally connected well on what was otherwise a frustrating night at the plate for him.
Crawford hasn't been anything close to the same guy he was last year when he finished fourth in NL MVP voting. In fact, he's performed below his career norms this season. But he has looked better since coming off the injured list about a week and a half ago, and it was great to see him finally make some hard, impactful contact. Jakob Junis was another hero from yesterday. He held the D-backs to one run in seven strong innings, and his emergence has been another bright spot of the 2022 season. Junis has drastically altered his pitch usage from his time with the Royals, and he is arbitration eligible next season, meaning the Giants will almost certainly bring him back.
The Giants' position in the standings is discussed. They gained a full game on the scuffling Padres, who lost again to the Marlins yesterday. The Giants are just 4.5 games out of the final playoff spot in the NL, and are very much alive with 46 games to play. To their credit, they've been hot. But they'll need to stay hot if they hope to secure a postseason berth.

They're not done yet. The San Francisco Giants needed to get hot in a hurry after a miserable start to the second half, and to they're credit they've been able to do it. The Giants won their fourth straight last night behind a gritty Alex Cobb, and improved to 7-2 since they were swept at home in a four-game series by the Dodgers. This is a soft pocket in the schedule, and it was clear that the SF Giants needed to take advantage. Fortunately, they've been able to do so over their last nine games. Now the challenge will be to keep it going.
It helps to have excellent starting pitching, and the Giants have quietly had that this year. It's been lost in the shuffle thanks to bad defense and a struggling bullpen dominating the conversation. But Cobb, Logan Webb, Carlos Rodón, Alex Wood, and Jakob Junis have been among the game's best. Cobb was supremely unlucky to start the year, but those sparking peripherals that were discussed ad nauseum early in the season have proved to be more predictive of his future ERA. Cobb has an ERA under 3.00 since late May, which the peripherals predicted.
Joey Bart continues to thrive since being called up from the Minors in early July. He has a 144 wRC+ since then, and importantly has only struck out about 31% of the time. That's still pretty high, but nowhere near the 45% rate he posted before being optioned to Sacramento.

Thairo! The San Francsico Giants' unsung infielder delivered a walk-off home run on Sunday, securing a much-needed three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Estrada has emerged as an important player on the Giants this season, and this wasn't the first time he hit a late-inning bomb that helped the Giants win a game. Down by a run with one out in the ninth, Estrada turned on the first pitch he saw and socked it high and deep into left-center field. Estrada has been above-average in pretty much all aspects of the game this season, which is great to see considering his age and multiple years of team control remaining. Co-aces Logan Webb and Carlos Rodón helped the SF Giants win the first two games against Pittsburgh.
Even with the win, however, the Giants still have a tough road ahead. Their record is just 57-57, and they are six games out of a playoff spot. But they have nine straight games remaining against below-.500 teams, and will need to continue to take advantage. The D-backs come into town next for a four-game series, and they've been a tough matchup for the Giants this season. Madison Bumgarner will be on the mound opposing Alex Cobb tonight. It remains to be seen how many wins the Giants will need in order to sneak into the playoffs (probably around 88-90), but in order to get in the Giants will simply have to play good baseball for the rest of the season.
Joey Bart returned after a few days off with an ankle sprain. He continues to be a bright spot this season, as he has been on a roll since being recalled after an early-season demotion to the minors. Joc Pederson took a pitch off the pinky on Sunday but thankfully X-rays came back negative. Thomas Szapucki was recalled from the minors and replaced Yunior Marte on the active roster. The Giants still have only 12 pitchers, and may make a move for another arm soon. Luis González appears to be a candidate to be optioned if that's the case.

The San Francisco Giants need to get hot in a hurry. They have a golden opportunity coming up, with the Giants' next 12 games against teams that are under .500. It all starts tonight with the Pittsburgh Pirates coming into town. Do the Giants need to sweep? Maybe. But winning two out of three is basically a necessity for the SF Giants, who enter play 7.5 games out of a playoff spot.
It's been a disappointing season for the Giants. After winning 107 games in 2021, this year has been a struggle. Their offense has generally been fine and their starting pitching is actually pretty good, but defense and bullpen issues have plagued the Giants all season long. They lost seven straight coming out of the All-Star break, which certainly didn't help. They don't seemingly have the talent to match up against the Dodgers or the new-look Padres.
Locked On Giants and Locked On Pirates discuss the state of these two teams, and what the Giants must do to take advantage of the schedule and get back in the race. A critical stretch of games for the SF Giants begins tonight, and the Giants have the pitching matchups in their favor. If a sweep is necessary, this series does set up well for the Giants to be able to do that, with Carlos Rodón and Logan Webb starting the first two games of the series.

The San Francisco Giants’ 2022 season has been disappointing, and it’s just about time to start thinking about the future. There is reason for optimism in that respect, and the Giants announced some welcome news this week. Casey Schmitt, who’s been tearing it up all season offensively and defensively for the High-A Eugene Emeralds, was promoted to Double-A. Also in good news, Marco Luciano has returned from the back injury that kept him out of action for two months. Hopefully Schmitt thrives in Double-A, and hopefully Luciano can make it to Double-A by season’s end. Kyle Harrison is currently in Double-A and continues to dominate. There’s a chance he could make it to Triple-A or even the majors by the end of the season.
Will Wilmer Flores be back with the Giants next year? Flores has been a popular and productive Giant in his three years in San Francisco, and there’s likely interest in bringing him back. Did Giants president of baseball ops Farhan Zaidi pass on Mickey Moniak or Jarred Kelenic at the trade deadline? Moniak was traded to the Angels for Noah Syndergaard, but the former No. 1 overall pick isn’t highly regarded anymore and would’ve been a very disappointing return for Carlos Rodón. Kelenic likely wasn’t offered for Rodón.
How much bullpen turnover should we expect from this year to next? Probably a significant amount. Dom Leone and José Álvarez are impending free agents, and several others can be optioned. Many Giants prospects likely to get a look in the next two months are relievers, such as Randy Rodriguez, who was just promoted to Triple-A, and R.J. Dabovich, who’s also in Triple-A.

The San Francisco Giants had a chance to cut their deficit in the wild card race down to 3.5 games, but instead they lead San Diego trailing in the standings by a season-high 7.5 games. The Giants won the first game of the series, and were in position to win the next two, but lost both in crushing fashion. They rallied against Padres closer Josh Hader in the middle game, only to lose on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth. They led 4-0 and 7-6 in the finale, but both times the SF Giants came up with big innings, they allowed huge innings in the bottom half. The Giants simply don't do enough to win often enough.
At this point, the Giants must get red hot or the hill will be too steep to climb. The opportunity sets up well, at least, since the Giants' next 12 games are against teams below .500. They haven't had an easy times with those teams this year by any means, but it represents one last good opportunity to make up ground. If they tread water or lose ground, the season will be pretty much over, barring some kind of miracle.
Joey Bart's ankle injury is discussed, as is the Giants' sloppy defense in the finale on Wednesday. J.D. Davis has been a bright spot since he was acquired at the trade deadline, but he has made a couple of bad throws recently that severely hurt the Giants. Wilmer Flores made one as well. The Giants' defense and bullpen has been a huge reason for their demise this season and it shows no signs of getting any better with this current group of players. It will likely be the Giants' downfall in 2022.
