Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. The first thing we learned is that the Giants' bats went quiet in St. Louis, and the outfield is becoming an area of concern. Austin Slater, Alex Dickerson, Mike Tauchman, and Steven Duggar are all going through rough patches. Only Mike Yastrzemski has been productive lately.

The second thing we learned is that Kevin Gausman was placed on the family medical emergency leave list, as his wife Taylor was hospitalized due to pregnancy complications. Thankfully, Taylor is doing well and Gausman is scheduled to start Monday in Los Angeles. Logan Webb made Gausman's start on Friday, and he continued to throw the ball really well.

The final thing we learned was that Tauchman was activated off the IL, Jay Jackson's contract was selected, Jason Vosler was optioned, and Evan Longoria was placed on the 60-day IL. We also received updates on Aaron Sanchez, Reyes Moronta, and Tommy La Stella, all of whom shouldn't be that far off from returning.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: The Giants are a couple weeks out from when the roster will officially “crunch." Who on the active roster do you see gone by trade, option, or DFA?

BABIP is a an indicator of lucky or unlucky hitting. Is there an equivalent for indicator for left-on-base ? Is seems like the Giants have left a ton on base, and maybe it’s all just evening out because they’ve typically been scoring those guys.

What role will Tyler Beede play post-All-Star break? Starter? Reliever? Neither?

Why are the Giants so attached to Beede? His numbers are terrible. He still has control problems.

Jake McGee throws a lot of pitches down the middle. When I heard he was a one pitch guy, I figured he had plus command. Strikes, yes; corners, no. Is this how he has historically pitched, or is he getting lucky this year? Does the fastball carry that much that this is expected to continue?

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' statistical rankings in key categories at the All-Star break. The Giants have been one of baseball's best offensive teams, lead by strong seasons from veterans Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, Evan Longoria, and Brandon Belt. But they've also had help, as the likes of Mike Yastrzemski, Darin Ruf, and Steven Duggar have been very good as well. The Giants have also been a great defensive team, with Mike Tauchman, Crawford, and others leading the way, and they've also had surprisingly good defensive performances from Donovan Solano, Wilmer Flores, and pretty much everyone else, with the possible exception of Alex Dickerson in left field. Darin Ruf and LaMonte Wade Jr. have provided positive defensive value filling in for an injured Belt.

On the pitching side, the Giants have been very good overall, led by Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, Tyler Rogers, Jake McGee, and Dominic Leone. One area of weakness has been baserunning, but they've more than made up for it by getting on base, hitting for power (the Giants lead the majors in home runs, isolated power, and slugging percentage), defense, and pitching. Given all of the data, it's no surprise that this team has the best record in baseball at the All-Star break.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick hands out Giants midseason awards. The MVP award realistically could have gone to three different Giants. Brandon Crawford, Kevin Gausman, and Buster Posey all had phenomenal first halves, but only one can win! Ben also talks about the Giants' Cy Young, which could go to Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Tyler Rogers, or Jake McGee. Most surprising player comes down to LaMonte Wade Jr, Evan Longoria, Steven Duggar, and Curt Casali. Finally, the best and worst moment of the year are considered. The Opening Night loss to the Mariners is up there, as is a stunning loss in Colorado. Among the best moments under consideration are the Mike Tauchman catch in LA, Casali's walk-off against the A's that made the Giants the first team to 50 wins, and Mike Yastrzemski's splash-hit grand slam that completed a comeback from being down 7-0. What a first half it was for the 57-32 Giants.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francsico Giants. Club president Farhan Zaidi met with the media on Friday, and talked about how he is prioritizing starting pitching at the trade deadline. The Giants have several outstanding starters, including Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, and Logan Webb, who returned to action on Friday and pitched very well on a pitch limit, but Zaidi is concerned about depth at the position given the rigors of a 162-game season.

The Giants also made several roster moves over the weekend, activating Webb, promoting Joey Bart (then sending him back down), and sending Tommy La Stella and Mike Tauchman on rehab assignments. The Giants will have a serious roster crunch upcoming when these players, along with the likes of Evan Longoria, are ready to return from injury. Potential trades will also add to the crunch.

Finally, Ben discusses the Giants selecting RHP Will Bednar with the 14th overall pick last night. Bednar is a physical righty with a plus fastball and slider capable of missing bats in the zone. He also has a bulldog mentality and seems destined to be at least a solid starting pitcher for the Giants in the not-too-distant future.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Who are the best and most realistic trade targets, and who would we have to give up? Are we willing to sell the farm for Max Scherzer or Jose Berrios? Are we going to go get Joey Gallo or another elite bat? Gallo and Kyle Gibson seem to make a ton of sense for the Giants. Would the Giants be able to swing a trade for both, and should they really look to make that big a move? What would a guy in the Gallo tier (and by that I mean Gallo) cost at the deadline? Marco Luciano has to be the one untouchable; would this regime be willing to give up a Joey Bart or a Hunter Bishop? Would a deal centered around Bart, Alexander Canario, and Seth Corry be a strong enough start for Sandy Alcantara? He seems to be the guy with the most control/upside that may be available, now that German Marquez may be staying.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants salvaging a game in the series finale against the Cardinals. Alex Wood tossed seven brilliant innings, Mike Yastrzemski got in the Cardinals' starting pitcher's head, and the Giants offense broke through for five runs after setting the table seemingly every inning. Yastrzemski, Donovan Solano, and Darin Ruf had big hits, and Tyler Rogers got Nolan Arenado to ground into a huge double play in the 8th inning. With the win, the Giants gained a game on the Dodgers and Padres, who both lost last night. Also discussed on today's show: are the Giants too reliant on home runs? Why Ben think that's a silly question.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the San Francisco Giants' second consecutive loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. As he has seemingly done a hundred times, Nolan Arenado delivered a big blow that put the Giants on their heels right away. He and Paul Goldschmidt have continued to haunt the Giants even after leaving the NL West. Johnny Cueto didn't have his best start, and the Giants offense could not battle all the way back despite numerous chances.

Ben also talks about two questionable decisions by Gabe Kapler on today's show. John Brebbia was left in for a second inning after giving up a run in his first, and Steven Duggar tried to bunt with two on and nobody out in the 9th inning with the Giants trailing by just a run.

A flurry of roster moves are also discussed. Prior to the game, the Giants activated Tyler Beede, recalled Jason Vosler, placed Jaylin Davis on the 10-day injured list, and designated Jimmie Sherfy for assignment.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the San Francisco Giants' disappointing loss to the Cardinals, and takes a look at what to make of the upcoming schedule. Kevin Gausman took a no-hitter into the 7th, but Kwang Hyun Kim ultimately outdueled him as the Giants offense couldn't get anything going against the Cardinals' left-handed starter. Alex Dickerson homered in the 8th, which bodes well for the next two games against right-handed starters. Johnny Cueto starts against Adam Wainwright tonight in a battle of veterans, and Alex Wood takes on a young righty on Wednesday night. The Giants play the Cardinals, Nationals, and Cardinals again in their next three series, and they really ought to take advantage considering they then play the Dodgers and Astros 10 times in 13 games.
