The roster is finally set. The Hornets made their final cut ahead of the October 22nd season opener, and in a somewhat surprising move, they waived veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie. The battle for that last spot was always between Dinwiddie and Pat Connaughton, and we’ll look at why keeping Connaughton’s $9 million contract makes sense for future trades. This decision also serves as a vote of confidence in the team's existing backcourt, particularly Tre Mann, whose hip injury doesn't seem to be a long-term concern, and two-way player KJ Simpson.

More importantly, this move signals a shift in philosophy. By being willing to pay Dinwiddie's $3.6 million salary for him not to be on the team, the new ownership regime is showing a financial commitment to roster flexibility and prioritizing depth, a welcome change from past seasons. We also touch on the shrewd way the front office is assembling its G-League roster, another sign of a more aggressive approach to team building. To close things out, we answer a great Sicko Satchel question: which former Hornets from the last decade would start over players on the current roster? This leads to a fun discussion about guys like Cody Zeller, Marvin Williams, and of course, the great Kemba Walker

That was, by far, the best game of the preseason. The Hornets went nuclear, putting up 145 points in a performance that felt like a return to the fun, league pass darlings of a few years ago. The entire game was capped off by an unbelievable, all-star caliber play: LaMelo Ball with a nutmeg on Jock Landale into a full-court, left-handed alley-oop to a streaking Brandon Miller.

We have to start with Miles Bridges, who was the player of the game with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists on incredible efficiency. He’s getting his points in a variety of ways, from spot-up jumpers to transition finishes, showcasing a more sustainable shot diet. We’ll also examine the contagious energy of Moussa Diabaté, who has become a fan favorite by creating countless second-chance opportunities and cleaning the glass with nine offensive rebounds. His chemistry with Collin Sexton off the bench has been a revelation, and we’ve officially dubbed them the "MoCo" duo. The question now is, what does this all mean? We’ll consider if this level of execution is real, especially with three key rotation players still out, and what it says about the team’s new, faster pace.

Welcome to a "silly season style episode" where the Sicko Satchel is overflowing with questions from the fans. We start by considering what would be the best possible omen for the Hornets this preseason, a question that leads to an evaluation of Tidjane Salaun's development, or lack thereof, and how Kon Knueppel is making the landing a bit softer. We also touch on the veteran presence making this team "serious people," with a specific focus on how quickly Collin Sexton has become a respected leader with his "competitive joy".

Then, things get interesting as we ponder what we would be willing to sacrifice for the Hornets to make a finals run, even with no championship guaranteed. That sends us down a rabbit hole to an even bigger question: what evil spirit is haunting the Spectrum Center?. We explore potential curses, from the Nick Batum guarantee against the "Process" 76ers to the long-forgotten Air Hugo blimp disaster, and even begin a hunt for the team's scattered "Horcruxes". Finally, we tackle the big topic of the week: is there any jealousy over the way Ace Bailey has performed for the Utah Jazz?. We look at his impressive preseason stats and consider if the Hornets made the right call for the locker room and the team's future

On today's show, we're recapping the Hornets' first preseason victory, a 120-116 win over the Dallas Mavericks. The story of the night was a brand new starting lineup that featured breakout performances from some unexpected players. Rookie center Ryan Kalkbrenner had a perfect night, scoring 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds, making a massive statement in the ongoing battle for the starting center spot. LaMelo Ball also continued his fantastic preseason, looking comfortable and efficient while pouring in 26 points with a +27 plus-minus. We also look at bounce-back games from Brandon Miller and Miles Bridges.

Then, we turn our attention to some controversial comments from ESPN's Tim MacMahon about LaMelo Ball. We play a game of "Fair or Foul" with his critiques, including his assertion that LaMelo "doesn't care to compete" on defense and that he "can't be the face of a winning franchise." We have a spirited discussion, arguing that these national media takes are outdated and fail to acknowledge LaMelo's improved effort and the lack of talent he's had around him for most of his career.

It's a "No Rules Friday" as we empty the Sicko Satchel and dedicate the entire episode to answering your best questions. First, we address a popular topic: will the Hornets finally play with the fast-paced transition offense that fans have been hoping for? We look at how a healthy LaMelo Ball, athletic bigs like Moussa Diabaté, and versatile guards like Tre Mann and Collin Sexton give them the personnel to do it. However, with our new access to Synergy Sports data, we also examine why LaMelo has historically been inefficient in transition and what needs to change for the team's pace to be effective.

Next, we respond to a listener's hot take that Collin Sexton could have a career year and be the team's second-best player. Finally, we tackle a crucial question: if you could guarantee only one player on the roster an injury-free season, who would it be? We present the compelling cases for both LaMelo Ball, whose availability is paramount to the team's direction, and Brandon Miller, who needs a full, healthy season for the front office to evaluate before a massive contract extension decision.

The Hornets dropped their second preseason game to the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-116, but this was a much more competitive contest against OKC's starters, and there were plenty of positives to take away. On today's recap, we look at the stellar performances from the backcourt. Tre Mann got the start and led the team with an efficient 18 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three. Collin Sexton provided an instant spark off the bench, igniting the offense with 12 first-quarter points, while LaMelo Ball looked smooth and comfortable in his 25 minutes.

Of course, the Moussa Diabaté propaganda continues, as he once again started at center and led the team with a +14 plus-minus, reinforcing the idea that the team is simply better when he is on the floor. However, the biggest point of debate is the continued struggles of Brandon Miller. Despite getting to the free-throw line, he had another rough shooting night (3-of-11) and we discuss whether it's time to be concerned or if patience is still required as he works his way back from a long injury layoff

On today's show, we borrow a premise from The Athletic's John Hollinger to identify the Charlotte Hornets' most important "hinge player." This is the non-star player with a wide range of outcomes whose performance could be the difference between a 20-win and a 30-win season. We make the case for several candidates, with Tre Mann leading the list as a potential Sixth Man of the Year contender. We also explore the unique impact that rookies Ryan Kalkbrenner and Tidjane Salaun could have if they are ready to contribute right away.

Then, we turn our attention to the latest win projections from Kevin Pelton of ESPN, who has the Hornets finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference with 28.5 wins. We examine his reasoning, which is rooted in the idea that "things can't go as badly as last season" with injuries, plus the addition of Collin Sexton and the expected development of Brandon Miller. We discuss whether this projection is fair and look at how injuries to other Eastern Conference teams could open the door for the Hornets to potentially outperform that number and make a surprising jump in the standings.

On today's show, we are setting the expectations for Brandon Miller as he enters his pivotal third season. After a rusty performance in the preseason opener, we discuss the level of patience he'll need as he works his way back from a long layoff following wrist surgery. The team needs a lot from him, and we look at what Coach Charles Lee is emphasizing for his development—specifically, a greater ability to get to the rim, draw fouls, and finish through contact.

We also examine the team's overall offensive philosophy, which was on full display with 51 three-point attempts in the first preseason game. Finally, we turn our attention to the trade market. A recent article from ESPN's Bobby Marks identifies the Hornets as one of three teams perfectly positioned to act as a third-party trade facilitator, thanks to a $14.1 million trade exception. We explore what this financial flexibility means for Jeff Peterson's asset collection strategy and whether the team might use it to acquire a much-needed center or simply continue to gather more draft picks.

The first preseason game is in the books, and while the Hornets fell to the Thunder's B-team 135-114, the final score is the least important part of the story. The main headline was the outstanding debut of fourth overall pick Kon Knueppel, who earned a surprise start and led the team with 18 points. We explore why his smart, fundamental game makes him a perfect "pillar filler" and an ideal complement to LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, making a strong case for him to be the opening night starter.

While Knueppel impressed and LaMelo provided some signature one-legged threes, there were major areas of concern, most notably on the defensive end. The starting unit posted an abysmal defensive rating of 164.7, getting consistently beaten on back cuts and struggling to offer any resistance. We also give a full rundown of the other key players' performances, including Tre Mann's excellent playmaking, Collin Sexton's knack for getting to the free-throw line, Brandon Miller's shooting struggles, and the tough debuts for fellow rookies Ryan Kalkbrenner and Tidjane Salaun.
