Locked On Hornets - Daily Podcast On The Charlotte Hornets

On today's show, we are back with the biggest takeaways from Head Coach Charles Lee's media luncheon. First, we address the battle for the starting center spot, with one host taking a victory lap on his prediction that veteran Mason Plumlee will get the initial nod. The main topic to come out of the event was a philosophical question: can a player be made into a leader? We examine the team's efforts to cultivate LaMelo Ball's leadership and debate whether he needs to be the primary voice when players like Brandon Miller and Collin Sexton seem more naturally inclined for the role.

We also have the latest injury updates on Grant Williams and Josh Green, whose absences will have an immediate impact on the rotation to start the season. Plus, we look at the surprising results of an ESPN front-office survey where Kon Knueppel received a rogue vote for Rookie of the Year. Finally, we empty the Sicko Satchel for a fantastic listener-submitted game, ranking a list of potential roster moves—including trading LaMelo Ball, trading Miles Bridges, and re-acquiring Malik Monk—from most to least surprising

With training camp just around the corner, we are firing up the Rotation Station to examine the Hornets' crowded roster. The team currently has too many players on guaranteed deals and will need to make some tough decisions to get down to the 15-man limit, which promises to create some intense competition in the preseason. We identify the most likely candidates to be cut, with Daquan Jeffries and Nick Smith Jr. at the top of the list, and explain why a busy offseason of signings has created this roster crunch.

Next, we turn our attention to the ongoing contract stalemate between Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors. With reports of a high asking price in trades, we explore whether the Hornets should get involved in the Kuminga sweepstakes. While the talent is enticing, we look at the significant concerns regarding his attitude, defensive commitment, and overall fit, ultimately explaining why we are relieved the front office has stayed away so far. Finally, we end the show with a "Who Wore It Best" for jersey #00, crowning a surprising but legendary winner between Robert Parish, Spencer Hawes, and Tony Delk

On today's show, we start by examining the biggest hole on the Charlotte Hornets' roster, a topic recently highlighted by Kevin Pelton of ESPN, who unsurprisingly points to the starting center position. While that may be the obvious weakness, we explore how this change in personnel could trigger a much-needed and dramatic shift in the team's offensive identity. The Hornets were statistically one of the worst transition teams in the entire league last season, but there is reason for optimism.

We look at how the presence of more mobile bigs like Moussa Diabaté and Mason Plumlee, combined with the hopeful return of a healthy LaMelo Ball—one of the league's biggest individual pace-pushers—could transform the team into a high-octane offense. Will Coach Charles Lee lean into his fast-paced Milwaukee roots, or stick with the slower, more methodical Boston style? We also open up the Sicko Satchel to discuss whether influencer collaborations actually help the team's cultural relevance and share a hilarious fan story about wanting to get married during a halftime show.

The moment has finally arrived—we are officially settling the debate for who wore the number three jersey best in Charlotte history. The main event features a showdown between Gerald "Crash" Wallace, the lone All-Star in Bobcats history and one of only three players ever to average two steals and two blocks in a season, and "Scary" Terry Rozier, who professionally kept the lights on and made the team watchable in the post-Kemba era. We also examine the legacy of the franchise's first-ever draft pick, Rex Chapman, and give Jeremy Lamb his due for a solid tenure in Charlotte.

After crowning a winner, we turn our attention to a wild prediction from The Ringer's Bill Simmons, who recently guaranteed that Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel will make the 2028 U.S. Olympic basketball team. We explore the comparison of Knueppel to Derrick White and discuss whether this is a bold but insightful take or simply offseason hyperbole. Finally, we open up the Sicko Satchel to answer a fantastic listener question: which NBA team serves as the best comparison for the current Hornets? We use criteria like age, market, and team-building philosophy to find the closest parallels, mentioning teams like the Pelicans, Rockets, and Pistons

With David Walker, the OG Walker, back in the building, we finally get to another round of "Who Wore It Best," although not the one Walker has been waiting for. We set our sights on the iconic number two jersey, sparking a debate for the ages. Is Larry "Grandmama" Johnson the undisputed champion due to his franchise-altering cultural impact, or do LaMelo Ball's Rookie of the Year and All-Star seasons in the jersey give him a claim? We also examine the strong case for Marvin Williams, the longest-tenured Hornet to wear the number, who provided veteran leadership for a playoff team.

In the second half, the conversation gets heated as we react to recent comments from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. When asked about the rising cost and fragmentation of watching games, Silver suggested that the league is a "highlights based sport" and that fans consume a huge amount of content for free on social media. We explore why these remarks are incredibly shortsighted and tone-deaf, especially for a local fanbase that has struggled for years just to find a consistent broadcast. We look at the long-term damage this mindset could do to creating a new generation of dedicated fans who experience the game live rather than through short clips.

This conversation naturally leads to a major debate: are injuries a valid excuse for the team's shortcomings? The Hornets had the fourth-most games lost to injury last season, but with significant new depth, we question if that reasoning will hold up this year. The discussion then shifts to the past, prompted by a headline wondering if injuries derailed the rise of the Al Jefferson, Nic Batum, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist teams. We argue that while injuries—particularly to MKG—certainly had an impact, the franchise's inability to build on that success had more to do with poor drafting and a failure to invest in the roster. We also touch on the team's awkward scheduling and subsequent cancellation of a "Sports Betting Night" for a game against Terry Rozier and the Heat.

On today's show, we start with the news of Josh Giddey agreeing to a four-year, $100 million contract with the Bulls. This deal perfectly illustrates the "Giddey conundrum," a tough spot for teams navigating the new CBA with players who are good, but not quite max-level talents. This leads us to examine the Hornets' own roster and future extension decisions. While the 2021 draft class is a non-factor, the front office will soon face a huge decision with Brandon Miller. We explore whether he is on a max-contract trajectory and what happens if his performance lands somewhere in the middle, similar to the contracts for Jabari Smith or Jalen Green.

To lighten the mood, we share some fun reporting from Rod Boone of The Charlotte Observer, who asked the Hornets' rookies about the first big purchases they plan to make with their new money. Finally, Doug presents a trade idea with the Philadelphia 76ers that would help them with salary cap issues while bringing Kelly Oubre Jr., Andre Drummond, and a first-round pick back to Charlotte in exchange for Pat Connaughton and Spencer Dinwiddie.

It's that time of year again—silly season is in full swing as we examine the brand new Top 100 players list from the Locked On Podcast Network. We start with LaMelo Ball, who landed at number 48, placing him just inside the top half of the league's elite. His ranking puts him in a curious tier of incredibly talented but chronically injured players like Zion Williamson and Joel Embiid, which might be a strange sort of compliment to his skill level when he's actually on the court.

Then, we turn our attention to Brandon Miller, who earned a spot on the list at number 82. His inclusion is a testament to his high potential and the flashes of stardom he showed during his rookie season, suggesting that voters are giving him the benefit of the doubt after his injury. Of course, a top 100 list wouldn't be complete without a discussion about who was left off. We look at the case for Miles Bridges and consider the on-court and off-court factors that likely contributed to his omission from the rankings this year. Finally, we offer a proper send-off to former Hornet Jeremy Lin following his retirement announcement, remembering his electric and impactful season in Charlotte.
