Locked On Mavericks - Daily Podcast On The Dallas Mavs

The Dallas Mavericks opened the NBA season with a loss to the Houston Rockets after a 38-12 second quarter where transition defense, communication and effort all broke down for the Mavs. What did Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving say about why the Dallas Mavericks lost, and how can the Mavs fix their second-quarter problem?

Nick Angstadt (@NickVanExit)  breaks down postgame audio from Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, along with Dusty May’s comments on transition defense and the missing vocal defensive leader. He explains why Marcus Sasser’s shot creation off the bench matters, why Morez Johnson Jr. could become the defensive voice Dereck Lively II used to be, and what Naji Marshall, PJ Washington, Daniel Gafford, Max Christie and Zaccharie Risacher need to bring going forward. Nick also digs into Kyrie Irving’s surprise at the Rockets’ double teams, his minutes restriction, and what the Mavs must change before facing the Indiana Pacers.

The Dallas Mavericks fell to the Houston Rockets in their NBA season opener after a 38-12 second quarter, but Cooper Flagg’s 32 points and Kyrie Irving’s return gave the Mavs something to build on. Why did the Mavs go 0-for-14 from three in that quarter, and how do Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving fix it?

Nick Angstadt (@NickVanExit) & Slightly Biased (Slightly Biased) break down what went wrong for the Dallas Mavericks against the Houston Rockets, and why Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg have to set the tone from the start. They dig into Cooper Flagg living at the free throw line, Marcus Sasser’s 17-point night, Naji Marshall running the second unit, and Dusty May’s early rotations. Plus: Morez Johnson Jr.’s rookie debut, Zaccharie Risacher, PJ Washington, Caleb Martin, Dereck Lively II, and the Mavs’ brutal opening schedule.

The Dallas Mavericks fan base brought the questions at a live Mavs Q&A, from whether Kyrie Irving or Cooper Flagg should take the final shot to what Cooper Flagg’s defensive ceiling looks like in the NBA. Should the Mavs cut Tarik Biberovic for Walter Clayton Jr., what would it take for Cooper Flagg to make an All-NBA team, and could Kyrie Irving be traded before the NBA trade deadline?

Nick Angstadt (@NickVanExit) & Isaac Harris (@IsaacLHarris) answer questions from the Raccoon Squad live at the Manhattan Project. They break down Daniel Gafford’s and PJ Washington’s trade outlook, what Mavs Team President Masai Ujiri would do with a Kyrie Irving offer, and how Dusty May can break the college-coach stigma. They also get into Mavs Owner Patrick Dumont, Max Christie, Dereck Lively II, Morez Johnson Jr., Zaccharie Risacher, Dwight Powell, and more.

The Dallas Mavericks let the NBA extension deadline pass without new deals for Dereck Lively II, Max Christie, and Marcus Sasser, while waiving Dwight Powell and keeping Moussa Cissé. What do these Mavs roster decisions say about the future around Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, and is Dereck Lively II now headed for restricted free agency?

Nick Angstadt (@NickVanExit)  breaks down why the Dallas Mavericks didn’t extend Dereck Lively II, what Masai Ujiri’s “free agency is dead” comment means for restricted free agency, and why Masai Ujiri and Mike Schmitz could still land Lively at a value. Nick also compares Max Christie’s player option and Marcus Sasser’s prove-it year to the deals for Naji Marshall and PJ Washington. He covers the Mavs’ thin ball-handling group behind Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving, where Daniel Gafford, Caleb Martin, Santi Aldama, Sergio De Larrea, and Tarik Biberovic fit, and gives a farewell to Dwight Powell’s 12-year Mavs career.

The Dallas Mavericks landed in the B tier of the Locked On NBA season preview tier rankings, alongside the Heat, Magic, Hawks, Jazz, Suns, and Blazers. Are Cooper Flagg, Kyrie Irving, and the Mavs a play-in team in a crowded NBA Western Conference, or can they climb into the next tier?

Nick Angstadt (@NickVanExit) & Isaac Harris (@IsaacLHarris) break down where the Dallas Mavericks rank against the Thunder, Spurs, Timberwolves, Lakers, Rockets, and Nuggets, and which East teams like the Celtics, Pistons, and Raptors might be overrated. They also look at whether the Mavs, Trail Blazers, Suns, or Jazz is most likely to rise or fall out of the B tier. Plus, what happens with Dereck Lively II’s rookie extension deadline, Dwight Powell’s roster spot, Max Christie, and John Poulakidas getting waived, along with FanDuel odds on Cooper Flagg, Morez Johnson Jr., and Sergio de Larrea, and a nod to Mavs Owner Patrick Dumont and Mavs Team President Masai Ujiri.
