By all accounts, the Carolina Panthers will select Alabama QB Bryce Young with the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on Thursday evening. It's unclear whether Young was always the pick or if the Panthers arrived at that conclusion following the past month and a half of evaluations but the consensus is that come Thursday he'll be a Panther. Julian provides a few thoughts on the likelihood that Young will be the franchise quarterback by the start of the weekend.

The Panthers have an opportunity early in the second round to select an impact player who could contribute from Day 1. Initially, Julian believed that that player should be a WR but recently the need at EDGE has become more apparent. Julian explains why he's had a change of heart.

During the 2022 season, the Panthers had one of the most improved offensive lines in the NFL. That unit is now a strength but there's one area of need. Julian address his appetite for the Panthers to target a tackle during the draft this weekend.

Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer, assistant general manager Dan Morgan, and director of college scouting Cole Spencer met with the local media ahead of next week's NFL Draft where they dispelled reports that they've made their decision on who to take with the top pick. Fitterer did reveal that the past month of evaluations has provided clarity but the Panthers have not zeroed in on a single prospect. While Julian Council believes that the Panthers are still having discussions he remembers the old saying that "when there's smoke, there's fire."

Last year as the Panthers contemplated taking a QB early in the draft, comparisons were made to Fitterer's time in Seattle when the Seahawks took Russell Wilson in the third round of the 2012 draft. Carolina would go on to draft Matt Corral after trading back into the 3rd round confirming that Fitterer wasn't afraid to go that route with a potential franchise signal-caller in Carolina. Unfortunately, an injury prematurely ended Corral's rookie season and he now sits near the bottom of the QB depth chart. The Wilson comparison may be a more apt fit for Bryce Young, who like Wilson is an undersized prospect. Julian goes into detail on how Young compares to Wilson.

Plus, further takeaways from Tuesday's availability.

For the third straight Monday, several national media reports suggest that the Carolina Panthers are focused on using the first pick on Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. The reports come 10 days before the Panthers need to make that decision and a day prior to the top 30 visits for Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud, the perceived favorite when they initially traded up to No. 1, and Kentucky signal-caller Will Levis. Julian Council discusses the nervousness surrounding the Panthers possibly arriving at a conclusion of who will usher the franchise forward under center.

Where does Panthers owner David Tepper factor into Young being viewed as the organization's choice? Julian takes an in-depth look at the quarterback play in Carolina since Tepper took over ownership and why that's led to the logical conclusion of drafting one next week.

Plus, are the Panthers using one final smokescreen by bringing Stroud in for a visit as the entire NFL world believes they've settled on Young?

The Carolina Panthers welcome back free agent wide receiver Damiere Byrd on Friday afternoon. Byrd spent the first three seasons of his NFL career in Carolina before spending time in Arizona, New England, Chicago, and most recently Atlanta. Byrd is the third addition to the wide receiver room for the Panthers since trading DJ Moore to Chicago. With the addition of Byrd, Adam Theilen, and DJ Chark, are Shi Smith and Laviska Shenault in jeopardy of being cut in August? How could drafting a WR impact the rest of the receiver room?

Julian Council evaluates the Panthers depth chart heading into the 2023 NFL Draft and discusses which position groups and what players could be impacted by the moves the Panthers make next week in Kansas City.

In 13 days the Carolina Panthers will be on the clock and will finally reveal which QB they believe can turn the franchise around in 2023 and beyond. Recent talk around the NFL suggests that Alabama's Bryce Young will be the pick. According to some, Young has always been who the Panthers have favored since trading for the top spot. If so, has this entire month-plus been about evaluating Young and seeing whether someone can surpass him? Julian Council answers this among other listener questions in this week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.
