Locked On Pelicans - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Pelicans

New Orleans Pelicans eye a blockbuster move for Ja Morant as the Memphis Grizzlies land a franchise-changing draft lottery pick. Could a trade involving Morant and Santi Aldama be the answer to the Pelicans’ big man woes? Jake Madison explores potential deals, lineup combinations featuring Zion Williamson and Dereck Lively II, and what Aldama’s skill set could add to New Orleans’ rotation.

The conversation heats up around the Milwaukee Bucks shopping Giannis Antetokounmpo and the impact on the Pelicans’ future draft assets—are the Pelicans positioned to facilitate a major trade for rim-protector Myles Turner? Madison also breaks down James Borrego’s slim prospects of becoming head coach while highlighting player endorsements and organizational challenges. Will New Orleans risk future picks for immediate talent, or should patience prevail?

New Orleans Pelicans take a measured approach in their head coach search, with Steve Hetzel and Jamahl Mosley emerging as frontrunners. Is patience in hiring a sign of a smarter front office, or could hesitation cost them ground in a competitive NBA landscape? Jake Madison examines why the absence of a quick decision may benefit the Pelicans, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing scouts and front office restructuring over immediate coaching hires.

The episode spotlights draft lottery fallout as the Pelicans’ pick conveys to the Atlanta Hawks at eighth overall following last year’s Derik Queen trade. Madison breaks down the implications of the Joe Dumars-led front office's recent moves, reactions to Indiana Pacers’ draft misfortunes, and the shifting NBA trade landscape with teams like the Memphis Grizzlies and LA Clippers now primed for major deals. Can the Pelicans capitalize on emerging trade opportunities and address pressing roster needs before the offseason heats up?

New Orleans Pelicans’ coaching search narrows as Steve Hetzel emerges as the frontrunner, impressing team officials alongside Darvin Ham. Will Hetzel’s experience in player development and defensive strategy transform the Pelicans’ identity, or might the team’s ties to familiar faces like Ham sway their decision? Jake Madison breaks down trusted reports from Mark Stein and Jake Fischer, weighing the implications of each candidate and examining how this process signals a strategic shift in New Orleans’ front office philosophy.

Key topics include the Pelicans’ need for defensive improvement, the impact of Western Conference rivals, and why optics and culture matter for the team’s future. The episode also spotlights the high stakes of Sunday’s NBA Draft Lottery, with New Orleans narrowly missing a top pick due to the Dereck Lively trade. Could these decisions define the Pelicans’ path in a fiercely competitive offseason?

New NBA Draft lottery odds may offer the New Orleans Pelicans a long-awaited escape from mediocrity, but will luck or leadership define their future? Jake Madison breaks down how the league’s revamped system shakes up tanking strategies, potentially boosts the Pelicans’ shot at top picks, and punishes organizational missteps for teams like the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards. With Zion Williamson as the centerpiece and a renewed focus on competitiveness, can New Orleans capitalize on this opportunity or will the new rules expose deeper franchise issues?

Key topics include the ripple effects of the lottery reform, the risks of banking on luck versus sound roster decisions, and lessons from the NBA Playoffs—especially the importance of quality three-point shots over sheer volume. Jake Madison also spotlights how teams like the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves are redefining postseason success, offering insights on what the Pelicans must learn to build a true contender.

New Orleans Pelicans zero in on Steve Hetzel as their likely next head coach, signaling a commitment to the two-timeline strategy of balancing player development with playoff contention. Could Hetzel’s experience with the Brooklyn Nets and reputation for connecting with young talent make him the right fit to guide Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy, and emerging prospects like Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen?

Jake Madison breaks down the Pelicans’ head coaching search, why fan-favorite Rajon Rondo and Darvin Ham are unlikely hires, and how Hetzel’s modern, defensive-minded approach could shape New Orleans’ future. The episode also covers Kurt Joseph’s official hiring as head strength and conditioning coach—a move praised by league insiders—and discusses the impact of recent organizational changes, including Bryson Graham’s move to the Chicago Bulls. How will these decisions influence the Pelicans’ offseason and direction for the 2024-25 NBA season?

New Orleans Pelicans face a pivotal coaching search as they look to maximize the talent of Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy, and Herb Jones. Can a fresh basketball mind bring the structure and identity this roster desperately needs, or is NBA experience a must for immediate playoff contention? Jake Madison and Dylan Sanders break down whether the next coach must be a tactician, a culture builder, or both—with surprise candidates like Thiago Splitter and Rajon Rondo generating real buzz.

Key discussions highlight the need for a coach who can harness the Pelicans’ versatile core, build winning habits, and mesh with front office vision. The episode weighs the fit of former players in leadership roles, touches on past struggles unlocking Zion’s full impact, and explores if New Orleans will double down on their current core or face a potential rebuild. Will the right hire finally turn the Pelicans into consistent playoff contenders?

Rajon Rondo emerges as a frontrunner for the New Orleans Pelicans' head coaching role—but is the franchise ready for such a bold move? Jake Madison explores NBA history, spotlighting former point guards like Steve Kerr, Jason Kidd, and Mark Jackson who made the rare leap from player to head coach with no prior assistant experience. Rondo’s high basketball IQ, leadership, and reputation as a “coach on the floor” make him an intriguing candidate, but the question remains: can the Pelicans provide the structure required for him to thrive?

Key topics include the archetype of successful player-to-coach transitions, the risk-reward calculus facing New Orleans, and how stability—or chaos—within the organization could dictate Rondo’s chances of success. With names like Zion Williamson, Trey Murphy, and Herb Jones in the mix and front office changes looming, the pressure is on the Pelicans to get this hire right. Will Rondo elevate the team, or could this gamble backfire amidst NBA’s new tanking reforms?
