Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins are never boring, that much we know. Today, they announced two massive hires for the organization as Ron Hextall has been named general manager and Brian Burke is the President of Hockey Ops. Hunter dissects both moves and starts with Hextall as that's a slam dunk. What kind of general manager will likely be with the Penguins? Does he have it in him to be more aggressive? Hunter then gets into the Burke hire and if he's going to be involved with the day-to-day operations or mainly just be an advisor. If it's the advisor, the move will likely be a lot better since Hextall will have free reign to do what he wants. Finally, Hunter gets to the listener's takeaways for both of these moves.

The Penguins dropped another heartbreaker, and again, were the better team in their second straight loss. Hunter gets into all of it for this episode and talks about Tristan Jarry's failed attempt to make a timely save the most. It's only 11 games, but this team just hasn't gotten one big save when they need it most, especially as they're closing in on at least a point. He also touches on Cody Ceci's continued strong play, plus breaks down Matheson and Letang as they had horrific showings. In the final segment, he gets to the listener takeaways and also touches on if the team should acquire a goaltender soon.

After an unexpected day off, Hunter is back with more Penguins content and this time, it's to update the GM search, as well as some practice updates. Hunter goes through some of the candidates who have already interviewed for the job and who are expected to interview. He discusses Kevin Weekes, as this may just be an interview where he can dip his toes into it. Is there an opportunity for him to blow the team away though? Hunter then gets into who his top 3 choices would be, and yes it includes Ron Hextall, who famously chased Robbie Brown around the ice after a goal. He also gets into the John Ferguson Jr. interview before closing with thoughts on Gillis and Futa. Finally, Hunter gives some practice updates as there looks to be some reinforcements coming to the lineup this weekend.

Hunter is joined by Jon Chik of Locked on New York Rangers for this special crossover episode, and the two hosts go into everything from these last couple of games. They touch on Pittsburgh's power play, and Hunter especially goes more in-depth as to why it's failing this season. Jon then gets into the Tony DeAngelo situation and asks Hunter if the Penguins would take a flier on him, despite what's happened with him throughout his career. They also get into the GM situation and what the latest update with that is, plus talk about how it's likely Sidney Crosby WILL score a lacrosse style goal this season for Pittsburgh.

The Penguins split their latest two games against the New York Rangers, despite deserving to win both of them. Sidney Crosby got the game-winner on Saturday night while Jason Zucker was the lone scorer in Monday night's 3-1 loss. Hunter talks about both games in this episode, and talks about both the positives and negatives? Should people start looking at the Kapanen trade a bit differently? Should Casey DeSmith get more starts? He then gets into the power-play and all the ugly surrounding it. Should Geno be taken off the top unit? He also explains just how little they're shooting on the unit and why if this continues, this may cost them a playoff spot. Finally, Hunter gets to the listener takeaways for the last segment.

The Athletic's Rob Rossi comes back on the Locked On Penguins podcast for one of the longest episodes yet. Hunter asks Rob all about the GM situation and what really went into Jim Rutherford resigning. How many times did he actually tell the organization that he was leaving? Was he trying to make a trade right before he left? They also get into the shortlist and how high of a chance each of the five have of getting a job. Would it really be that weird seeing Ron Hextall as the GM? Is Colorado going to let Chris MacFarland interview for the position? Does he expect one of Chiarelli, Pierre, or Tallon to GM? They also get into some other options, such as Mike Gillis, whose application was leaked on Twitter a few nights ago. All that, plus much more on this special Saturday episode of Locked On Penguins.

The Penguins played their worst game of the season in Boston on Thursday night. With that, Hunter is still back with another episode to talk about the game and what went wrong. What's the No. 1 reason as to why the Penguins are where they are right now? What this performance expected given the circumstances? Hunter also breaks down Geno's struggles again as more issues of his game popped up. He also gets into two big positives of the night and why P-O Joseph needs to stay in the lineup full-time even when the other defenders get healthy. Finally, Hunter finishes up with the listener takeaways before teasing a special guest for Friday's episode.

We got some shocking news in Pittsburgh today as Jim Rutherford resigned out of the blue. Hunter dissects the move and gets into David Morehouse's comments as to when Jim made the decision. He also talks about his moves over the years and how the Penguins don't win those back-to-back cups without his vision in 2016 and 2017. After that, Hunter gets into his most recent moves and how a change was still likely needed? Who are some people that would be great candidates for this position? What qualities do they need to have to succeed long term? After that, Hunter gets to some listener feedback from the move to finish up the episode.

The Penguins winning streak is gone but there were still positives to take out of this game (despite a meme happening in overtime). Pittsburgh salvaged a point even when things looked dire and even had multiple chances to win in that period. Hunter breaks it all down, including how Jason Zucker and Kasperi Kapanen had their best games of the season. Tristan Jarry also looks locked in as he's had 3 great games in a row and is in no rush to give the net back. Hunter also touches on Brad Marchand's "tripping" call and why it should've been 4-on-4 before getting to Evgeni Malkin going full Chris Kunitz on a 2-on-0. Finally, we have the listener takeaways segment where Hunter gets to hear what you all thought of the game.

The Penguins have now won four in a row and with that, scored their first regulation win! Hunter is here to break it all down as Jake Guentzel got the game-winner with less than 2 minutes remaining in the third period. Hunter talks about that, plus how it was a better performance defensively for Pittsburgh (outside the second pairing). Is it also time to fully panic on Malkin? Hunter breaks down which of his issues have gotten worse as he continues to look lost. Tristan Jarry also bounced back again nicely, plus Hunter gets to the listener takeaways from the game. Finally, Hunter previews the two games against Boston as the Pens haven't won in Boston since 2014.
