Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

Happy Friday! Hunter is back with more Penguins content and starts the show by discussing some of the best goals of this past season. Where does Evgeni Malkin's goal against Darcy Kuemper rank? What about his goal against the Calgary Flames in the shootout after he had his 1,000th game against the Chicago Blackhawks recently? Hunter also discusses Sidney Crosby's brilliant goal against the Colorado Avalanche in late March while he was at the Steel Panther show. He showed off once again why he has the best backhand in all of hockey. He also analyzes Crosby's OT winner against the Columbus Blue Jackets late in the season when the Penguins came from four goals down, along with Jake Guentzel's OT winner against the Ducks when it looked like the team was about to lose. After that, Hunter looks at the latest updates on Erik Karlsson courtesy of Rob Rossi and gives his thoughts on the continued stalemate. Finally, Hunter discusses the NHL hopefully returning to the Olympics in 2026 and how it will be the final hurrah for Crosby and Malkin when it comes to winning gold medals.

Hunter is back with another guest for this episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast as Jesse Marshall from The Athletic and McKeens Hockey joins to discuss the Penguins' offseason to date, specifically for how much they have improved so far this offseason. The two look at Dom's article from The Athletic and how his model is super optimistic regarding the Penguins' offseason. Do Hunter and Jesse feel the same way? They look at the moves that Dubas made and while they have improved, it still may not be as much as Dom would think. They also dive into Dom's model versus what JFresh's model is saying and how the analytics can be a bit different before they look at some more milestones for both Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang heading into next season. Finally, they end the show with some breakout player candidates for the Penguins, even though they don't have too many for this season.

Welcome to the dead zone! Hunter starts the show by discussing Ty Smith's contract and what it means for the Penguins this upcoming season. Is he going to be able to take a spot in the lineup every night? Is the battle against PO Joseph going to be that much more interesting? Hunter also looks at how the Penguins need to be careful with Smithy because he is no longer waivers exempt. He will now have to go through waivers in order to be sent down to WBS this upcoming season. He also dives into his numbers from this past season and analyzes what makes him stand out more than POJ and vice versa. After that, Hunter looks at how Sidney Crosby is looking at a couple of significant milestones this upcoming season. Hunter analyzes Sid's chances at getting into the NHL's all-time points leaders this season and how many points he needs, despite him about to be 36. He then looks at how he's approaching the 1,000-assist mark and how it's going to be a special night when he gets that milestone. Finally, he ends the show with a full list of games that should be must-watch/must-sees for fans this upcoming season.

Hunter wraps up the mailbag discussion during today's episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast and is joined by first-time guest Patrick Damp to also wrap up Season 4 of the show. They discuss questions regarding backup plans for the Penguins if they're not able to get Erik Karlsson, and that's where Hunter brings up Troy Terry, even though he's an RFA. He's exactly the type of player that Kyle Dubas would go after, even though he's not another defenseman. Hunter also takes questions regarding if this is still a playoff team if Karlsson doesn't get dealt to them, and even takes a question about a hypothetical Jake Guentzel for William Nylander swap. They also get into what their favorite Penguins games that they've attended, plus which is the best goal of the Sidney Crosby era to date before ending the show with some Tristan Jarry talk.

Hunter decided to open up the mailbag for the first time in quite a while on Thursday and some great questions were asked! To start the show, Hunter dives into all of the Erik Karlsson questions, including whether this deal will get done by August 1st and what may have to be included for a deal to work. He also takes a question about what the best food is in PPG Paints Arena before looking at if Mike Sullivan could be on the hot seat if the Penguins stumble out of the gate. He also looks at what an ideal Jake Guentzel contract extension looks like before ending the show with some talk about new front office hires and how he got into hockey at such a young kid.

The dog days of summer have arrived but that doesn't mean there are not things to discuss! For this episode, Hunter is joined by Tyler Weeks of Around The 412 to discuss what Lars Eller and Noel Acciari had to say to the media on Tuesday. They look at how the plans for the bottom six were revealed and whether or not it's a good plan with a core that's a bit older. They look at the potential of a Nieto-Eller-Acciari line and whether that will be the third line heading into the year. After that, they look at what the backup plan is if the Penguins do not land Erik Karlsson. Could the team have interest in Matt Dumba? Will Jeff Petry be on the team at that point? Finally, they end the show with what the top games were this past season even though they missed the playoffs.

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a couple of roster signings on Friday and they were peak Kyle Dubas moves. To start the show, Hunter dives into the two signings of Vinnie Hinostroza and Andreas Johnsson as Dubas brought in more depth players to compete for roster spots. Hunter starts by breaking down Hinostroza's strengths and weaknesses before moving over to Johnsson. He discusses how he's one heck of a playmaker and it showed during his time in New Jersey. He also has a history with Kyle Dubas, so that also played a factor in him signing. After that, he looks at what these moves mean for training camp as it has the potential to be extremely fascinating in September. Are DOC and Nylander locks to make the team still or will they have to earn it? What could the lines look like? Finally, he ends the show by looking at whether the Penguins are a playoff team as constructed right now.

Happy Friday! It's starting to get quiet around the NHL but that doesn't mean the content stops. Hunter is re-joined by Doug Glattke on his episode of the podcast and they first discuss Filip Zadina after he was placed on waivers before he had his contract terminated earlier this week. The two look at him as an option for the bottom six and ponder whether the team should take a flier on him. Hunter goes over his numbers from this past season along with how he's gotten better defensively before Doug discusses how he's the typical "Kyle Dubas signing." After that, the two look at Sam Poulin as he was at development camp earlier this week and how it's great to see him back with the organization after he stepped away back in December. They look at if he has a shot at making the team out of camp and what his NHL future looks like before they end the show by discussing what adjustments the Penguins need to make to their power play for this season.

Happy Thursday again! This time, there's hardly any Erik Karlsson content for yinz as Hunter starts the show with some talk regarding Drew O'Connor. He dives into O'Connor filing for salary arbitration and what that means for him and the Penguins. He discusses how the two sides likely won't have to go to arbitration and that a deal should be easy to negotiate before looking at how this opens up a second buyout window for the team. He discusses when the second buyout window would open and if it's likely that the Penguins would use one considering that they did not during the regular window. He then moves on to his Metropolitan Division power rankings Post July 1 and where the Penguins stack up to the other teams in the division. Are they a playoff team? Are they outside the playoff picture right now? Finally, he ends the show by discussing Patric Hornqvist as he announced his retirement from the NHL on Wednesday.

Happy Wednesday! Hunter is back from his Fourth of July celebrations and is joined by Josh Yohe to discuss the past few days in Penguin Land. They first discuss the Erik Karlsson situation and if there's anything new on it. Josh drops a couple of nuggets about it, including about how something almost happened on Saturday before they look at how he would fit onto the team. They analyze who would play with him at 5v5 while also spitballing if he and Kris Letang would run the power play since Todd Reirden would be having a field day with that. Hunter also wonders when this trade will happen since the Sharks don't appear to be in a rush to make this deal, despite not having any leverage. Also: Who would be the perfect partner for EK65? After that, they discuss the Jarry contract and Josh gives his thoughts on it before they look at who will be his backup. Are Casey DeSmith's days numbered? They then discuss the bottom six and if Drew O'Connor and Alex Nylander will take major steps this upcoming season. Could they both get full-time roles with the team? What about Radim Zohorna after he was brought back? Finally, Hunter and Josh look at what else Kyle could do, especially if he doesn't get Erik Karlsson.
