Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

Yep Penguins fans, it's time to clean house. Hunter starts the show in an unusual way but don't worry, you all will get into it. He first looks at how embarrassing of a performance this was and how the team showed absolutely nothing from start to finish. He crushes everyone on the roster for showing no fight, energy, spirit, or anything as the Penguins looked like they didn't even want to be there. After that, he examines why the Fenway Sports Group needs to make changes NOW. Not tomorrow, not this weekend, not this week, but NOW. He analyzes how it all went wrong with Ron Hextall and how he has made the same mistakes here as in Philadelphia. He also applauds the fans for somehow sticking through that game and even making their displeasures known since they started some chants during the game. Finally, Hunter looks at what this performance means for the trade deadline as it might suit the Penguins better to just punt on this season since they won't do anything in the playoffs. He also gives his thoughts on whether the team has quit on Mike Sullivan after how lethargic they looked in this one. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

It's another off day for the Pittsburgh Penguins but there are always lots of things to discuss when it comes to this team. Hunter starts the show off by previewing Thursday night's tilt against the Edmonton Oilers and how these are now playoff games. He looks at how the Penguins have been bullied in their last 3-4 games against the Oilers and details what they need to do to stop the bleeding against them. He then pivots to a new rumor that popped up WHILE he was recording and that is the Penguins being a finalist for Luke Schenn. Hunter analyzes Schenn as a player and looks at how he would fit if the Penguins were to acquire him before giving his overall thoughts about it. He digs into the numbers to find that they already have multiple defensemen who do what he does on a nightly basis, plus analyzes the likely return that the Canucks would want. Finally, Hunter ends the show by analyzing just how awful the third line has been this season and why Mike Sullivan needs to stop this madness with it before it is too late. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

It's no secret that the Pittsburgh Penguins have been a massive disappointment this season and to start the show, Hunter looks at how it came to this. He goes into the numbers with how the Penguins were set up beautifully with their top players coming back at discounts and how Ron Hextall butchered the rest of the lineup badly. He looks at how it shouldn't have been so hard for him to make a few changes because the core players take up less than $30 million combined for this season. It is not and has not been the core's fault all year. In the second segment, Hunter discusses a Jeff Petry rumor he saw today and what he's heard about it. He also analyzes Petry's season so far and why it wouldn't really make much sense to deal him unless you're getting Timo Meier or someone similar in return. That said, is there a defenseman that he would move to free up some space? Stick around for that answer. To end the show, Hunter dissects what Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman discussed on the Jeff Marek Show on Tuesday and why the Penguins need to say no to adding sandpaper (unless that player can score).

Whew, that was another tough one. Hunter is joined by Phil from Islanders Twitter to recap another stunning Penguins loss to the Islanders as they blew another third period lead to them. Hunter goes over how more bad goaltending and sloppy defensive play doomed the Penguins yet again as they continue to find new ways to lose. He looks at how Jarry was out to lunch on the last two goals and why he's got to have those, despite it being his first game back. He then looks at what the turning point of the game was while Phil gives his input. The answer may even surprise you. Hunter also details why it's time for Ron Hextall to get out of his dungeon to make this team better as the trade deadline is approaching very quickly. No, this team is not going to sell, especially after the front office went all in during the offseason. The two also discuss the outlooks for each team as we head down the stretch as the Islanders are going to be without Barzal for a bit while the Penguins have been anything but consistent. Are the odds of the Penguins missing the playoffs going up? What needs to change to get this thing turned around? All that, plus a lot more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

It's a special Thursday edition of the Locked On penguins podcast because it's time to talk trades! Hunter is joined by Jeff from Penguins Twitter (@LetangCult) to discuss everything trade-related regarding this team. They get into all of the third-line center targets the team has been connected to, plus others that the team hasn't been yet but could. They also look at the team's biggest need and if Ron Hextall can fix it in the next two weeks. Jeff then brings up an idea he thought about a couple of weeks ago regarding Jacob Chychrun. Do the Penguins have the pieces needed to get a deal done? Can they outbid a team like the Los Angeles Kings or Boston Bruins? Hunter then engages Jeff in a debate about if this team really needs another defenseman before the two move on to goaltenders. Do the Penguins need to do anything about their tandem at the deadline? Should they wait until the summer? The two also discuss Ron Hextall and if he's doing a good job waiting this out before ending the show with a small preview of Friday's game against the New York Islanders. Just how big of a game is it? Can they put the Islanders away for good in this stretch? What are the keys to getting it done? All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

The Pittsburgh Penguins got the win on Tuesday night, but it hardly came easy. Hunter starts the show out by praising Casey DeSmith for his performance as he was busy right from the opening faceoff. He goes into how his active stick, plus his movement really shined in this one, plus how he looked a lot more aggressive compared to normal. He analyzes some of the saves that he was able to make and how the Penguins got some strong goaltending from him not just in this game, but in two of his prior three starts as well. After that, Hunter looks at how great the top line performed as Sidney Crosby was the best player on the ice. He analyzes the first Jake Guentzel goal as the two took a play right out of the Tampa Bay Lightning's playbook from 2011. Oh, I bet you know that one. He then touches on how it seems like Jake Guentzel is having a "down year" eye test wise but when you look at the numbers, he's still having good production. Why is that? Does something still seem amiss about him? Finally, Hunter goes into a brutal coaching blunder from David Quinn toward the late stages of this contest and then slams the team for still looking broken. All of that, plus a look ahead to the schedule, is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will conclude their California road trip tonight against the San Jose Sharks and yinz know what that means. Hunter starts the show by previewing that game as the Penguins cannot afford to get swept by a team that's basically tanking this season. He goes over what went wrong in the last matchup and how the Penguins can rectify those problems in this one. He also looks at what the team did well and how they can build off that, especially when it comes to the PP. After that, Hunter has some trade talk with a report about Ivan Barbashev out there from this morning. Should buyers beware when it comes to him? Hunter digs into some of his metrics to find that out and what he'd be willing to give up to get him if the Penguins show interest. He then turns his attention to Ryan O'Reilly and why he'd be a great fit for the third line center spot if the Penguins can make the money work. He checks off all the boxes and can still play at a high level, despite being in his early 30s. Finally, Hunter looks at who will be starting in goal for the Penguins on Tuesday night before going over which players will likely be traded from Josh Yohe's latest article.

The Pittsburgh Penguins played perhaps two of their best games of the season last week only to have a terrible loss to the Los Angeles Kings overshadow them. Hunter starts the show by getting into the decision to start Casey DeSmith and why it had pros and cons. He looks at how DeSmith didn't do enough to keep the Penguins in the game, especially when giving up the second and third goals. In turn, that allowed Dustin Tokarski to come in ice cold, which showed in an ugly fashion since he hadn't played in a while. After those goals, even when the Penguins played well, it was hard for them to get back into it as the Kings took over. After that, Hunter dives into Sidney Crosby's game misconduct and why he got it. He looks at how the crosscheck happened and how Rickard Rakell didn't even come over to help him, which was a bit weird. He then explains how Crosby had every right to be upset and slams Garrett Rank for continuing to be a garbage official. Hunter also gives the latest practice updates and how Tristan Jarry looks destined to start on Tuesday. He then explains why Jan Rutta won't be activated just yet before circling back to Jarry and why a chronic hip issue could be causing these injuries. All of that, plus much more is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

It's a special Saturday episode of Locked On penguins as Hunter is joined by Jason Hernandez of Locked On Ducks to recap Friday night's contest. The two start with how dominant the Penguins looked as they made a statement in this game. The momentum from the Colorado game carried over into this one in a big way. Hunter goes into how the Penguins got depth scoring from all over the lineup and how they fired the third-most shots in franchise history on poor John Gibson. The two then discuss just how bad the Ducks have been this season while JD wants Hunter to make him an offer for Adam Henrique. They also get into Sidney Crosby being a boomer to Trevor Zegras and why it's a nothing-burger before previewing Saturday night's Pens-Kings contest. All of that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are about to start their West Coast trip and what better way to celebrate that than with a new guest? Hunter welcomes Annie (sweetannieod on Twitter) to the show as she's an avid Ducks watcher. They first touch on what's gone wrong for the team this season before looking at how they've had a decent hot stretch as of late (it's been their first one this season). After that, they get into the trade deadline as the Ducks are expected to be one of the busier teams. Who does Annie thinks will go? She tries to sell Adam Henrique to some of the listeners since he's a bit up there in age before pivoting to Max Comtois as someone who can really help a team's bottom six. She also gets into how nobody saw just how bad this year would be for the Ducks before the two dive into the matchup. Annie gives her keys for the Ducks to pull this one out while Hunter gives his keys for the Penguins to win since they have to bank points during this road trip. It's not a daunting one anymore, especially when two of the teams are among the worst teams in hockey. Finally, the two give their predictions for who will take this one home.
