Locked On Presents: Slaying Goliath – How Appalachian State Conquered A Giant

Part of what makes a college football upset so exciting is watching the students celebrate in ways that only the youthful can. Just this year, Vanderbilt fans carried a goalpost through Nashville after upsetting then #1 ranked Alabama at home. Here is Thomas Sherrill’s recollection of how Appalachian State students celebrated in 2007 after upsetting Michigan, carrying the school’s goalpost around campus and eventually to then Chancellor Kenneth Peacock’s house. Students celebrating a college football win is part of what makes college football so great. Here is how Appalachian State alumni remember celebrating the biggest upset in college football history.

Also featuring the voice of Mark LeGree who set the record for interceptions in a season for Appalachian State in 2008 and would be drafted by the Seattle Seahawks.

Episode 4 explores how the Mountaineers pulled off the unthinkable. The Mountaineers offense, defense and special teams all had to work together to do just enough to complete the greatest upset in college football history. This is how Corey Lynch, Armanti Edwards and Appalachian State made it happen and how UM QB Chad Henne and future New York Giants Super Bowl hero WR Mario Manningham almost saved the Wolverines in the game's final moments. The podcast also explores what happened in the aftermath of this historic sports moment.

Episode 3 is about Michigan fighting back. The 5th-ranked Wolverines were a roster filled with future NFL talent like Chad Henne and Mario Manningham. Head coach Lloyd Carr wasn’t letting his team go down without a fight. As Appalachian State head coach Jerry Moore told Charissa Thompson on the sideline they were about to get “the best the Big Ten’s got. The way they would play against Ohio State… Notre Dame… Rose Bowl. That’s the way they’ll play the second half.” Despite starting the half down 11 and star running back Mike Hart getting banged up, Michigan was determined to not let a small school from the mountains of North Carolina embarrass them.

Episode 2 explores how the Mountaineers were able to go into halftime with an 11-point halftime lead on the Wolverines in The Big House. To do that, the Mountaineers defense needed to limit a potent offense led by Chad Henne, Mario Manningham, Mike Hart and future 1st overall pick Jake Long. Not to mention, establishing the run on offense with QB Armanti Edwards and RB Kevin Richardson as well as getting the ball in Dexter Jackson’s hands to make a few more plays. Getting a first-half lead on Michigan isn’t easy. This is how Appalachian State did it.

Episode 1 explores how the Mountaineers were able to schedule a “money game” with Michigan and why head coach Jerry Moore cared so much about them, how App State prepared for the game, Mike Hart’s dominant running on the first drive of the game, and the moment that Dexter Jackson stunned the Wolverines and put his school on the map. Not to mention, what does Adam Sandler’s remake of The Longest Yard have to do with any of this?
