Locked On Raptors - Daily Podcast On The Toronto Raptors

In Episode 1401, Sean Woodley is joined by Rafael Barlowe (Locked On NBA Big Board) to dive into NBA Draft season head-on with a look at guard and three-point shooters the Raptors might be able to draft with the likely 13th-overall pick in 2023 NBA Draft. Off the top, Sean and Rafael discuss the quality of the talent in the draft around the Raptors range, and whether the Raptors might be able to address their dire need for guard play and shooting with their first-rounder this year -- assuming they don't jump up into the Wemby Zone. Next, Sean and Rafael run through a handful of potential future Raptors, include Nick Smith Jr. of Arkansas, Keyonte George of Baylor, Cason Wallace of Kentucky, the Michigan duo of Kobe Bufkin and Jett Howard, Gradey Dick of Kansas, and Jordan Hawkins of the national champion UConn Huskies. Plus, is all of this conversation moot with Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster all but certain to draft Victor Wembanyama's teammate Bilil Coulibaly in a classic Raptors draft day surprise?

In Episode 1400, Sean Woodley goes solo to talk about a bunch of Toronto Raptors-related topics, including J.J. Redick interviewing for the Raptors job, Pascal Siakam missnig All-NBA and what it means for his extension talks this summer, and an early look at some potential mid-level exception targets the Raptors might pursue in free agency. Off the top, Sean digs into the Raps decision to interview J.J. Redick, which it's understandably ruffled a few feathers as another example of a former player jumping the line ahead of head coaching prospects who have paid their dues, and why interviewing Redick, who seems like a longshot to actually get the job, seems like an example of good process as the team is clearly casting a wide net in their search. Next, Sean discusses Pascal Siakam missing out on All-NBA recognition, and what it means for the contract extension talks that are sure to go down this summer. Does missing out on super-max qualification this year improve or decrease the odds of the team and their two-time All-Star reaching an extension agreement his off-season? Lastly, Sean answers a listener question about who the team should be targeting with their mid-level exception. Kevin Love, anyone?

In Episode 1399, Sean Woodley goes solo to discuss O.G. Anunoby being named to the NBA's All-Defense Second Team for the first time in his career and what the honour means for his looming extension talks this summer. Off the top, Sean digs into why the All-Defense nod was so deserved for Anunoby, a one-of-one defensive player who excels in every area, from counting stats, to advanced metrics, to positional versatility, to the eye test. He's the best wing defender in basketball right now, and is the easy choice as the best defensive player in Raptors franchise history. Next, Sean takes a look at what O.G. making All-Defense means for his extension talks this summer, and why Anunoby is beginning to look as close to untouchable as any core member of the team outside of Scottie Barnes. Lastly, Sean runs through a couple listener questions, including whether a new coach will increase the odds the Raptors can keep O.G. long term.

In Episode 1398, Sean Woodley is joined by Crina Mustafa (Homestand Sports, Enjoy BBall) to talk about the Toronto Raptors reported pursuit of Las Vegas Aces head coach Becky Hammon, the WNBA's potential expansion to Toronto, and the WNBA Canada Exhibition game between the Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx going down this Saturday at Scotiabank Arena. Off the top, Sean and Crina discuss why the Raptors likely will not land Becky Hammon to be their head coach, partly due to timing, and largely due to the Raptors simply not offering a more attractive situation than coaching the defending WNBA champions. Next, they dig into the WNBA's potential expansion to Toronto, the issues that are ratcheting up the calls for more teams in the W, and why Toronto is a no-brainer destination for a new team. Lastly, Sean and Crina tee up Sky vs. Lynx in Toronto this Saturday, pinpoint key players to watch, and preview the new WNBA regular season which is just days away from tip-off.

In Episode 1397, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob (Raptors.com) to rank their top five best moments and/or games from the 2022-23 Toronto Raptors season. Off the top, Sean and Vivek are in agreement: Pascal Siakam dropping 52-9-7 at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks was the clear highlight of the season. But what about after that? Vivek went more game-focused, highlighting big Raptors wins, including a victory over the Phoenix Suns with the help of a dagger three by Christian Koloko, and a very impressive road win over the Sacramento Kings. Plus, some individual efforts get some love, including a prolific O.G. Anunoby performance and a very satisfying Jakob Poeltl effort that came soon after his deadline acquisition. Meanwhile, Sean highlights some pockets of the season where things did not stink, including Scottie Barnes' best month of the season, the first couple weeks of the year where the Raptors looked like they had some real promise, and O.G. Anunoby's post-Poeltl play. Plus, is Sean insane to have chosen the no. 5 best moment he did? Probably!

In Episode 1396, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob (Raptors.com) to take a look back at the 2022-23 season for Masai Ujiri, Bobby Webster and the Toronto Raptors front office, as well as the decision-making over the last four seasons and whether it's been as bad as it has felt like it's been. Off the top, they dig into the moves over the last calendar year or so, going all the way back to the Thad Young trade, through the Otto Porter signing in the offseason, and the big bet on the team's internal growth that went awry. Plus, is there a chance the Jakob Poeltl trade goes down as more damaging than good? Next, they discuss the ways in which they think the front office has most erred since the championship in 2019. Are some of their "mistakes" overblown? How much has their focus on physical profile over translatable NBA skills informed their current situation? What about their love of handing out player options? And lastly, does the front office get enough credit for nailing the Scottie Barnes pick? And what are Sean and Vivek's confidence levels in Masai and Bobby's ability to nail a very difficult offseason?

In Episodr 1395, Sean Woodley is joined by Jamar Hinds (TSN, Raptors Republic) to discuss the end of the Toronto Raptors bench and determine which players from this season should return for another kick at the can in 2023-24 in the form of a parlour game: Bench Guy, or Good-bye? Off the top, Sean and Jamar discuss Christian Koloko, who is the most no brainer Bench Guy on the roster and stands a real chance of being a viable low-minute backup center next season, and Malachi Flynn, who just might not have it. Next, they chat about whether Jeff Dowtin Jr. deserves another look after some strong defensive stretches as a backup guard, and whether Dalano Banton brings enough to the table to warrant a third year in the Raptors' development pipeline. Lastly, Sean and Jamar discuss Otto Porter Jr.'s potential viability next year, why it looks like the end of the line for Thad Young, Joe Wieskamp likely at least getting a camp invite after signing a deal late in the season, and Ron Harper Jr., who Sean is ready to completely hitch his wagon to.

In Episode 1394, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl (DIME, Basketball Feelings, Gaming Society) to answer some Toronto Raptors themed mailbag questions from you, the listeners. Off the top, Sean and Katie dig into why -- UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES -- should the Raptors pursue Dillon Brooks as a free agent addition after his reported divorce with the Memphis Grizzlies. Next, they answer a question about which Toronto Raptors player stands to chance to be the most improved next season, with both Scottie Barnes and Precious Achiuwa having very compelling -- and important -- cases. Plus, what is the feeling about Scottie Barnes' fitness for a rookie max extension in a year's time? Seems crazy we're already reckoning with that, but here we are! Lastly, Sean and Katie answers some very silly questions about Nick Nurse's grocery store etiquette, exactly where Spicy P comes in on the Scoville scale, which Raptors would be best suited for a weekend in the wilderness (including a great Sean life hack re: tents), and whether the 2022-23 Raptors could have more used prime Vince Carter or prime Tracy McGrady on the roster.

In Episode 1393, Sean Woodley is joined by long-time NBA reporter and Locked On contributor Howard Beck (GQ Sports) to discuss some of the bigger questions facing the Toronto Raptors going into a very important off-season. Off the top, Sean and Howard discuss the high degree of difficulty the Raptors front office has given itself this summer, and why the Raptors' current position -- in the league's beefy middle -- is no longer something to be looked down upon, as just about three quarters of the league finds themselves in a similar place. Is building from the middle any more unlikely to yield a championship contender than a full on teardown? Next, Sean and howard discuss the Raptors' decision to move on from Nick Nurse, why it felt like it was time to make the move, and the difficulty of hiring a new coach without a clear idea of what the roster for next season might look like. Lastly, Sean and Howard discuss the pros and cons of the Raptors looking to trade Pascal Siakam this off-season, and whether Scottie Barnes has the goods to eventually become the foundational star the Raptors clearly hope he is.

In Episode 1392, Sean Woodley goes solo to review the up and down seasons of Toronto Raptors bench forwards Chris Boucher and Precious Achiuwa. Off the top, Sean digs into what went well for Boucher and Achiuwa in 2022-23. Boucher's formula for success didn't change all that much outside of slight uptick from three-point range. Otherwise? Transition dunks, offensive rebounds and big time defensive highlights were what powered him to success. Problem is, he didn't quite bring his ideal level of fury and pop to every outing. Achiuwa meanwhile had a rocky season where his role changed a lot, but he remains an elite defensive player, who performed surprisingly well as a finisher near the rim and as one of the most foul-averse players on a team that fouls a ton. What didn't go so well? Well, Boucher was wildly inconsistent in his effectiveness. Part of it due to awkward lineup construction, but a lot of seemingly tied to him just not having it more often than he did this year. For Achiuwa, his three-point shooting cratered, his role definition left him unclear on where he was best optimized, and his play as a center was pretty off. He's a wing, probably, looking ahead into his fourth season and beyond. The shame about the inconsistent play of Boucher and Achiuwa is what when one or both of them were on, the Raptors were incredibly hard to beat. Is Boucher a trade candidate? Sean digs into it all!
