Locked On Raptors - Daily Podcast On The Toronto Raptors

In Episode 1391, Sean Woodley goes solo to run through the three most important questions any Toronto Raptors coaching candidate should be asked by the front office in an interview, before running through the list of Raps interviewees reported by Adrian Wojnarowski, highligted by Las Vegas Aces champion coach Becky Hammon, Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn, Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee, and Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson. Off the top, Sean digs into the most important questions any candidate for the Raps top job should have great answers for in an interview: How do you plan to foster the development of Scottie Barnes? How do you plan to bring a culture of togetherness back to the franchise? And how do you plan to reimagine the offense? Next, Sean runs through the background and qualifications of the names Woj reported, including Hammon, Lee, Quinn, Atkinson, Jordi Fernandez, Darko Rajakovic, Kevin Young, Mitch Johnson and more. Plus, what about Jerry Stackhouse? Adrian Griffin? And will other candidates join the conversation? Either way, it doesn't seem like this search will be done quickly.

In Episode 1390, Sean Woodley is joined by Samson Folk (Raptors Republic) to break down the 2022-23 season of polarizing Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet and what comes next for the team's lead guard. Off the top, Sean and Samson chat about what went well for VanVleet this season. His pick-and-roll operation alongside Jakob Poeltl was a real bright spot, and as usual, he continues to drive positive play and bring order to all the Raptors' best lineups. That said, it was by no means a perfect season, as his on-ball defense suffered a steep drop-off, his three-point stroke waxed and waned, and the relationship between Fred and Scottie Barnes was callled in to question. Was there any fire behind all the smoke? Was Nick Nurse more the culprit behind the team's off-kilter locker room vibes than VanVleet? Plus, how can the Raptors plot a course forward with VanVleet, who is still good, but definitely has flaws that need to be compensated for. Can the Raptors afford to move on from VanVleet without a readymade replacement for his point guard skills, which are absent elsewhere on the roster? And what do we envision as the endgame for Fred and the Raptors this summer?

In Episode 1389, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl (DIME, Basketball Feelings, Gaming Society) to break down the sophomore season of budding Toronto Raptors star Scottie Barnes and take a look at what his future might hold. Off the top, Sean and Katie chat about their biggest positive takeaways from his season. Most impressively, he wore a bunch of different hats, and learned how to operate within his various different roles on the team very effectively after brief windows of adjustment. He's a basketball sponge, a visionary passer, and still very much a player who has yet to be fully moulded -- and that's a good thing! Next, Sean and Katie dig into the negatives of Barnes' second season, and how the front office and coaching staff's lack of direction and role definition probably played into some negative impressions of Scottie's season and his interactions with veteran teammates Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet. Are the on-court tensions between Scottie, Pascal and Fred fixable with a fresh set of eyes in the form of a new head coach? Plus, why Barnes' conditioning is a massively important area of focus this summer as he looks to ditch the Fourth Quarter Scottie moniker and become Four Quarter Scottie. And some thoughts on how his mid-range touch could unlock the rest of his game. Lastly, Sean and Katie discuss why the Raptors' off-season need for shooting is critical to Scottie's development, whether it's time to hand the keys to Barnes and make it his team going into Year 3.

In Episode 1388, Sean Woodley goes solo to quickly address the news of Ime Udoka getting hired by the Houston Rockets and thus no longer being in the running to replace Nick Nurse with the Toronto Raptors, before diving into the 2022-23 season of Pascal Siakam and what comes next for him. Siakam was better than ever this year, and turned in one of the best individual seasons in Toronto Raptors franchise history. He remains a good ISO and post-up hub, and is still comortably the best player on the team. But will the fit issues with the Scottie Barnes, Pascal Siakam and Jakob Poeltl front court force the Raptors front office to make a tough decision regarding the two-time All-NBA forward who is up for a pivotal extension this summer? Could a new coach weaponize Siakam as an off-ball scorer akin to what he was back from 2018 through 2020? And does the Siakam-Barnes-Jak trio need one more year to see if the fit can be massaged -- ideally with a three-point shooting uptick on the part of Siakam? Lastly, Sean examines the two potential roads the team could go down with Pascal this summer. Extend or trade? What are the arguments both ways? And why does a trade make less sense this summer than it might make sense if Siakam were on a longer term contract? All that, plus a Discord listener question about Siakam's odds of finishing Top-5 in MVP voting some day.

In Episode 1387, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob (Raptors.com) to talk about the status of Masai Ujiri and the Toronto Raptors' front office now that they've played the Nick Nurse firing card and sit on the precipice of a massive off-season for the franchise. Off the top, is the there any warmth on the seats of Ujiri and Bobby Webester? Probably not just yet, but they've certainly painted themselves into a corner where the fury will be loud if the team bungles the very complex off-season it has set up for itself. Next, Sean and Vivek play a game of Fact or Fiction centered around some of the quotes from Ujiri's season-ending press conference. Is Jakob Poeltl actually a Top-10 center in the league as Ujiri declared? Can the team be fixed without major roster moves if the lionized culture the team used to proudly cultivate is restored? Did Nick Nurse's comments before the late-season game in Philly really have no bearing on the Raptors' decision to fire him? And will the Raptors win in Toronto again under Masai's leadership?

In Episode 1386, Sean Woodley reacts to Friday morning's announcement by the Toronto Raptors that they have fired championship-winning head coach Nick Nurse after five seasons with the team. Off the top, Sean digs into his biggest takeaway on the firing, why it feels like the right time for the Raptors to make this move despite all the success Nurse has had, and why the internal locker room dynamics that seemed to decay under his leadership are the biggest reason the move makes sense, not his outside the box preferred playing style. Next, Sean sifts through some of Masai Ujiri's comments on the firing and the off-season that lies before the Raptors. Ujiri clearly indicated the team has no plans to tank, and Sean thinks that's good. However, should there be some concern with Masai declaring his belief in Malachi Flynn and Dalano Banton, or will the front office have a plan to tackle the team's weakness for which it is most to blame: the team's lacklustre depth beyond the top 7 or 8 guys. Lastly, Sean looks at what comes next for the Raptors, specifically as it relates to the extremely important Scottie Barnes, whose growth over the course of this season and into this summer were big focuses of Ujiri's presser, and who the next coach might be. Ime Udoka? Jerry Stackhouse? Patrick Mutumbo? Someone else?

In Episode 1385, Sean Woodley is joined by Jamar Hinds (Raptors Republic) to review the season that was for Toronto Raptors shooting guard Gary Trent Jr., who might be the most difficult to project of the Toronto Raptors pending unrestricted free agents. Off the top, Sean and Jamar dig into their biggest positive takeaways from Trent's season, in which he operated well within the flow of the Raptors' offense and did his duty as a late-clock bailout guy, all the while flip-flopping back and forth between the starting lineup and the bench. Next, they dig into the things in Trent's game that still leave something to be desired, including his lack of defensive oomph outside of his knack for steals, and the very limited playmaking package he brings to the table. Were his struggles all his fault, though? Or was he over-relied upon on a team that often sunk or swum with his ups and downs. Lastly, Sean and Jamar look ahead to his very likely unrestricted free agency this summer, take stock of what could be a cool market for his services, and make the case for his return contingent upon the Raptors supplementing their core six guys with a more robust supporting case.

In Episode 1384, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl (DIME, Basketball Feelings) to talk about the season that was for Toronto Raptors defensive ace and NBA steals leader O.G. Anunoby. Off the top, they dig into whether O.G.'s season was the single biggest highlight of the year for the Raptors, as his defense reached new heights while his opportunistic bucket-getting on offense was a massive boon to a not-very-good Raptors offense. Next, they chat about what felt like a season-long tension regarding his role, and why the final 26 games of the season where he played his best ball alongside Jakob Poeltl offered Anunoby enough of a role to leave him content after season-long burblings about his discontenet with his role on the team. Plus, what areas does Anunoby need to improve upon this summer to continue his ascension and perhaps open up an even larger role in the offense? Lastly, Sean and Katie examine an offseason of uncertainty surrounding O.G. His play down the stretch suggested he's someone the Raptors should hang onto, but with the CBA extension rule change maybe leaving the Raptors a little short in terms of a hefty extension offer and a contract year looming, is there still a chance Anunoby could get moved this summer? And will the Raptors find themselving regretting an Anunoby trade in short order if they do in fact pull the trigger on something?

In Episode 1383, Sean Woodley goes solo to review the season of Toronto Raptors center and prized Trade Deadline acquisition of Jakob Poeltl. Off the top, Sean digs into the good things Jak brought to the Raptors: reliable center play, screening, rim-protection and interior scoring, and an uplifting effect on his teammates, specifically O.G. Anunoby and Fred VanVleet. He made the starting five into one of the best in the league, and made the Raptors 13.4 points per 100 possessions better when he was on the floor. It wasn't all smooth, however! On the negative end of things, the arrival of Jak created a spacing conundrum alongside Pascal Siakam and Scottie Barnes. Is that something that can be rectified with improve shooting strokes for one or both of Siakam and Barnes? Or is it a fundamental flaw in the reasoning behind the trade that could result in either a big time shake-up some time down the line, or a whole lot of regret for the front office? Plus, how much of an issue is that Poeltl can't close games in every matchup? Is that a Jak problem? Or is it only a problem because the Raptors lack of the depth of options and stylistic diversity needed to complement what Jak does well? Lastly, Sean takes a look at Jak's outlook as he hits unrestricted free agency this summer. It's hard to see an outcome that doesn't see Jak back in Toronto, right? Plus, a listener Discord question about the Raptors' defensive scheme and where Jak fits into it.

In Episode 1382, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob (Raptors.com) to begin picking apart the wreckage of the 2022-23 Toronto Raptors. Today, they dig into how much of a failure this Raptors team was compared to the lofty pre-season expectations placed upon the squad. What were the biggest individual disapppointments? And is there any chance they can be rectified going into next season? Next, Sean and Vivek reflect back upon what they were most wrong about at the beginning of the year. Vivek was bullish on the Raptors' addressing their three-point shooting issues via internal growth, while Sean was completely fooled by the Raptors' fast-paced start to the season. Lastly, they discuss what they learned the most about the Raptors and team building over the course of this year, with two big takeaways coming to mind: the Raptors ain't special, and winning isn't a given even with all the success the franchise has had; and the need for more depth to navigate the rigours of 82 games is painfully apparent after what we just witnessed.

Come hang out in the Locked On Raptors Discord server, where we're hanging out all offseason long: https://discord.gg/GsbT2JeX
