Locked On Raptors - Daily Podcast On The Toronto Raptors

In Episode 1448, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob (Raptors.com) to answer a whole bunch of Toronto Raptors questions sent in by you, the listeners! Off the top, Sean and Vivek discuss which young Toronto Raptors are in line to take the biggest leaps in the 2023-24 season. Is Scottie Barnes set to take off in Year 3? Or does one of Precious Achiuwa, Christian Koloko, Gary Trent Jr. or someone else stand the best chance of taking a big step forward? Plus, what is standing in the way of Scottie Barnes being an effective point guard? Next, they discuss what a successful rookie season would look like for Raptors rookie Gradey Dick, what Precious Achiuwa will need to do in order to secure a mid-level sized new contract from the Toronto Raptors, and what the chances are of one of Achiuwa or Jalen McDaniels finding themselves in the Raptors' starting lineup to open the 2024-25 season. Lastly, Sean and Vivek examine the potential of a Gary Trent Jr. contract extension getting done before the new season, and reflect on the legacies of DeMar DeRozan and Dwane Casey in Toronto. Those guys sure rocked!

In Episode 1447, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl (DIME, Basketball Feelings) to talk about the Toronto Raptors dealing with what seems to be crippling indecision about their direction, answer listener questions from the Locked On Raps Discord, and run through some of Katie's favourite experiences and encounters while she was in Vegas for Summer League. Off the top, Sean and Katie chat about the Raptors and whether they're dealing with a little analysis paralysis as they attempt to plot their future, and the potential cost of waiting on making a decision with regards to the franchise's direction. Next, Sean and Katie field some listener questions about Chicago Bulls RFA Ayo Dosunmu and whether he'd be a good fit with the Raptors were they to work out a sign-and-trade for his services, which Andrew Lloyd Webber musical most reflects this Raptors' offseason, and which Toronto Raptors have a chance to become fan favourites in the 2023-24 season. Lastly, Sean grills Katie about her trip to Las Vegas for Summer League and has her run through some Vegas superlatives, including Most Vegas thing Katie saw, Best Summer Raptor to talk to, Best NBA interaction and more!

In Episode 1446, Sean Woodley is joined by Asad Alvi (Prose & Claws, Yahoo! Sports Canada) to chat about the latest noise around Toronto Raptors star Pascal Siakam, whether the Raptors would be a fit for Tyler Herro in a theoretical three-team Damian Lillard trade with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Miami Heat, and their final Summer League takeaways. Off the top, they chat about the Siakam stalemate which doesn't seem much closer to a resolution after the weekend, what the best path forward for the Raptors is with Siakam, and Asad's interesting split-the-difference trade that could land the Raptors Damian Lillard while hanging on to Scottie Barnes. Next, they chat about the latest rumours from Mike Scotto of HoopsHype about Tyler Herro and the Raptors' potential interest in sneaking into the Damian Lillard trade to land Herro as a third team. Is Herro what the Raptors need? Lastly, they chat about their final thoughts from a mostly uneventful Raptors Summer League campaign that left both of them feeling pretty good about the Gradey Dick selection.

In Episode 1445, Sean Woodley and Jamar Hinds (Raptors Republic) discuss the conundrum facing the Toronto Raptors at the moment: do they need to simply pick two of Scottie Barnes, O.G. Anunoby and Pascal Siakam to build the team around going forward, purely for the sake of picking a franchise direction? And how does the Raptors; 33-17 finish to the 2021-22 season with Siakam and Barnes leading the way help inform that decision? Off the top, they lay out the three options that lay before the Raptors: trade Siakam and pivot to a youthful team that'll need a long time to build up led by Barnes and Anunoby; extend Siakam and trade Anunoby to give the Barnes-Siakam duo a shot as the most purely talented duo among the three guys; or make the big move and offer Scottie Barnes up in a Damian Lillard trade push? All had their merits and drawbacks! Then, they dive into the Rapotrs second-half heater in 2021-22 that saw Siakam and Barnes play wonderfully off one another. Is anything about that close to the season replicable going forward? How does the addition of Jakob Poeltl help or hinder that group's viability? And is there any chance Precious Achiuwa can reach the heights of that season to help offset the potential loss of Anunoby in a trade? Plus, will this nightmare summer ever end? Probably not actually. This is our hellish reality now.

In Episode 1444, Sean Woodley goes solo to break down the Toronto Raptors' third game in Vegas Summer League that featured some really exciting stuff from Gradey Dick before discussing where new Raptors signee Dennis Schroder might fit into the Raptors' plans next season. Off the top, Sean digs into Dicks' 22-7-3 outing on 8/19 shooting in which his two-point scoring craft and genius off-ball movement were on full display. You'd like him to shoot better than 2/10 from three, but overall, the parts of his game outside of his deep shooting are probably more important to see on display right now than his shooting accuracy, which will surely come along. Next, Sean runs through his takeaways on Ron Harper Jr., Moses Brown and Markquis Nowell's performances against the Summer Pistons and ponders where each might fit into the plans of the Raptors or Raptors 905 this coming year. Lastly, Sean discusses Dennis Schroder's fit within the Raptors, breaks down why he probably should not be the starting point guard for the team as it's currently constructed, and why there's a chance for him to really shine in shooting-heavy second units as a table-setting point guard and organizer, all the help of some indicative numbers from his 2022-23 season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

In Episode 1443, Sean Woodley goes solo off the top to talk about alternate routes for the Toronto Raptors if they extend Pascal Siakam in lieu of trading him as has been rumoured for a while and ideal guard targets for the Raptors via trade before welcoming in Doug Branson of Locked On Hornets for a little Jalen McDaniels talk! Off the top, Sean digs into the alternate pathways the Raptors might look at if they extend Pascal Siakam like they probably should. Could O.G. Anunoby be the more sensible player to move considering his own contract situation and value as a player? Could an OG move help reassemble a more sensible roster around the Barnes-Siakam duo? Next, Sean digs into some of the guards around the league that the Toronto Raptors should be going after to help balance their roster. Immanuel Quickley, Cole Anthony, Ayo Dosunmu and more all come up! Lastly, Sean welcomes in Doug Branson of Locked On Hornets to break down the game of the newest Toronto Raptors, Jalen McDaniels.

In Episode 1442, Sean Woodley goes solo to discuss the latest reporting on Toronto Raptors star forward Pascal Siakam and the rumours that he might be headed out of town some time this summer, with the Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers both identified as potential suitors. Off the top, Sean digs into the latest from Marc Stein, and retraces the franchise's steps that have led to what could be an embarassing, and potentially damning divorce with their best player and one of the best Toronto Raptors in history. How did we get here? Sean digs into why it would represent a pretty collossal failure on the part of the front office for all their minor moves and small mistakes of the last couple years to lead to a trade of their best overall player. Next, Sean digs into what could potentially be on offer from the Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers. Some combo of De'Andre Hunter, AJ Griffin, Kobe Bufkin, Jalen Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu from the Atlanta Hawks could give the Raptors a nice youthful talent infusion, but will the Hawks be compelled to play ball? The Indiana Pacers can probably put one of Jarace Walker, Ben Mathurin or Andrew Nembhard on the table, but are any of those prospects tantalizing enough to make it worth moving off a guy who the Raptors could very easily just sign to an extension to keep him around long term? Lastly, Sean discusses why he'd absolutely be in favour of the Raptors extending Siakam, both because there is plenty of reason to think he'll remain quite good through the life of his next deal, and because the Raptors might stand a chance of trading him for more down the line if in fact that's the endgame here. Barring a great offer coming Toronto's way this summer, hanging on to the very good basketball player is probably the best move.

In Episode 1440, Sean Woodley is joined by Jamar Hinds (Raptors Republic) to count down their personal Top-3 Fred VanVleet moments from his seven-year tenure with the Toronto Raptors. Yes, but the end VanVleet became a super polarizing player, but there's absolutely no room for debate: he's one of the best players in franchise history, and had all sorts of indellible moments from his time with the team, dating all the way back to his very first Summer League and G-League stints with the franchise, into the Bench Mob's coming out party on national TV against LeBron James and the Cavaliers, his many exploits during the NBA Championship run of 2019, and his biggest achievements as one of the faces of the team in the years following the title. Freddie Jr. and the subsequent Fred Sr. hot streak, 54 points against the Orlando Magic to brighten up an otherwise depressing season, a huge triple-double against the Utah Jazz, and many more of Fred's best moments in Toronto all get discussed today on a transaction-free Friday episode of the show.

In Episode 1439, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob (Raptors.com) to break down the Toronto Raptors offseason so far and give them a grade on the series of moves that lead them to this point before digging into some reasons to get excited about the current roster construction and playing a classic Locked On Raptors game. Off the top, Sean and Vivek dig into the Raptors offseason so far, which has seen the departure of Fred VanVleet, the re-signing of Jakob Poeltl and the additions of Dennis Schroder and Jalen McDaniels so far. Has this marked the low point for the Masai Ujiri regime in Toronto? And are there ways in the which the offseason can be salvaged, either through a Pascal Siakam trade or a swing for the disgruntled Damian Lillard? Next, Sean and Vivek run through some reason for optimism if the current roster is in fact the one the Raptors more or less go into the 2023-24 NBA season. Development appears to very much be back on the front burner, which is fun. There should also be some interesting lineup constructions that can be built around Scottie Barnes as a lead ball-handler -- although it'd be nice if there were more! Plus, does the Raptors defense stand a chance of being near-elite? Lastly, Sean runs Vivek through the trial that is That Random Raptors Game, with an important Fred VanVleet outing from 2017 the subject of this latest instalment.
