Grayson Singleton examines the critical adjustments SMU must tackle, starting with public accountability, penalty woes, and undisciplined play calling that have hindered the Mustangs' ceiling.

Cornerback remains the glaring weakness on a defense otherwise stout against the run, leaving SMU vulnerable to elite ACC quarterbacks and receivers. With standout Marcellus Barnes the lone bright spot in the secondary, attacking the transfer portal for impact corners is non-negotiable. As the ACC becomes increasingly competitive—with Miami, Pitt, Georgia Tech, and Duke showing staying power—complacency isn’t an option. Can the Mustangs clean up penalties and shore up their secondary before 2026? Grayson outlines the must-fix issues if SMU hopes to separate from the pack and contend for championships.
