  • Breaking down 2022 Arizona State Sun Devils football schedule game-by-game: NAU, Oklahoma State, & Eastern Michigan

Arizona State Sun Devils football kicks off in a little over a week! With the season so near, we turn our attention to breaking down the Sun Devils' 2022 schedule game-by-game and seeing what Arizona State football is going up against. First, host Richie Bradshaw breaks down the three nonconference games for Arizona State Sun Devils football - NAU, Oklahoma State, and Eastern Michigan. NAU is coming off a 5-6 season but will be looking to take down Arizona State after upsetting the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson last season to complete a sweep of the two major Arizona universities. Oklahoma State was THIS CLOSE to winning the Big-12 and while they do have some major replacing to do on the defensive side of the ball, an offense led by Spencer Sanders and coached by Mike Gundy will be more than a tough game for Arizona State, especially going on the road to Stillwater, Oklahoma. Eastern Michigan has enjoyed some nice success in recent years under head coach Chris Creighton, but the program will be replacing its starting quarterback from last season (Ben Bryant) after he opted to transfer to Cincinnati. How will the Arizona State Sun Devils football program hold up to start off the 2022 season with its out-of-conference games? Check out this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast and hear our analysis!

  • Did Arizona State Sun Devils football set Jayden Daniels up to fail?

When quarterback Jayden Daniels entered the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier this year and eventually committed to the LSU Tigers football program, it understandably left many Arizona State Sun Devils football fans flustered, to say the least. Fans didn't see it coming whatsoever, especially when the three-year starter had announced he was returning to ASU for his senior season. Daniels was coming off a disappointing 2021 season compared to what Sun Devils fans had become accustomed to based on his prior seasons, but he was nonetheless the best option the team had at quarterback. Following his departure, Arizona State Sun Devils fans, alumni, boosters, and the like had mixed feelings ranging from sympathy to frustration towards Daniels's decision to transfer, but one thing seemed clear: there were no hard feelings between the two parties. One of Daniels's biggest supporters, his mother (Regina Jackson), went on a Twitter spaces live recently and made some interesting comments regarding Arizona State University and its inability to build a team around Daniels during his time in Tempe. Is Ms. Jackson accurate in her somewhat pointed comments about the program or is this an inaccurate statement? Host Richie Bradshaw gives his brutally honest opinion on these comments on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast.

  • What losing Michael Matus for the 2022 season means for Arizona State Sun Devils football

Injuries may be a "part of the game," but it never gets easier to see them happen. The Arizona State Sun Devils football program fell victim to the injury bug when captain Michael Matus (defensive end) went down Monday, August 15 with a torn ACL in his left knee. Matus was coming off a career-best season for the Sun Devils and was expected to be one of the most heavily relied on players in 2022 following several departures on the defensive line, particularly Jermayne Lole to the NCAA Transfer Portal (Louisville). Matus's loss will be challenging to overcome in more than one aspect, but there are a few different directions Arizona State can go in replacing his production. Anthonie Cooper will likely get the first crack for the starting role with some healthy competition from Joe Moore and Gharin Stansbury pushing him, as well. Could the Arizona State Sun Devils also get creative and flex one of their interior defensive linemen like Omarr Norman-Lott or B.J. Green to the outside? Host Richie Bradshaw gives his analysis on the situation and how the Arizona State Sun Devils football program should move forward with this loss on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast.

  • How rookie Arizona State Sun Devils football rookies faired in week one of the 2022 NFL preseason

Turning our attention away from the 2022 Arizona State Sun Devils football team briefly, we can't help but wonder what our former Sun Devils who departed the program this year to make the leap to the NFL are doing. In the 2022 NFL Draft, Arizona State University Sun Devils football saw four players get selected: Rachaad White (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), D.J. Davidson (New York Giants), Jack Jones (New England Patriots), and Chase Lucas (Detroit Lions). Four more, Darien Butler (Las Vegas Raiders), Curtis Hodges (Washington Commanders), Kellen Diesch (Miami Dolphins), and Dohnovan West (San Francisco 49ers), signed on as undrafted free agents. Through one week of the 2022 NFL preseason, all eight former Sun Devils remain with their respective teams, with some making some nice waves and showing off their skills that we became accustomed to seeing on Saturdays. Tune in to this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast as host Richie Bradshaw updates you on our favorite Arizona State Sun Devils football stars as they begin their NFL careers.

  • Can Arizona State Sun Devils football survive NCAA Transfer Portal losses? Defense edition

On the number side of things, the Arizona State Sun Devils football program didn't suffer nearly as many losses to the NCAA Transfer Portal as its offensive counterpart did. Unfortunately, the defense did lose quite a few significant talents that were going to be incredibly important factors for the 2022 unit, and at each level of the defense nonetheless. The Arizona State Sun Devils must cope with the losses of defensive lineman Jermayne Lole, linebacker Eric Gentry, and cornerback Tommi Hill, along with linebacker Jordan Banks and defensive back Cam Phillips. The aforementioned Lole, Gentry, and Hill will be tough to replace. Lole was slated to be the starting defensive tackle for the team and was arguably the Sun Devils' best player heading into this season. Arizona State does have some good, young players to help mitigate his loss in Omarr Norman-Lott and B.J. Green, but Lole's presence will be sorely missed. Replacing Gentry will be difficult with a lack of proven depth at linebacker, but long-established starters Merlin Robertson and Kyle Soelle should be able to shoulder most of the load. In the secondary, Hill was projected to be one of the starting outside cornerbacks this year, which was especially crucial this season following the losses of Chase Lucas and Jack Jones to the NFL. Timarcus Davis will step into Hill's role, while a rotation of Ro Torrence, Keon Markham, and others will help to cover up this loss (no pun intended). Host Richie Bradshaw gives his detailed analysis of these losses on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast.

  • Can Arizona State Sun Devils football survive NCAA Transfer Portal losses? Offense edition

No team got dismantled by the NCAA Transfer Portal the way the Arizona State Sun Devils football did this offseason. Tons of starters were lost both on offense and defense, leaving a lot of questions and uncertainty about the 2022 season. Offensively, the Sun Devils must replace key contributors like Jayden Daniels (LSU), DeaMonte "Chip" Trayanum (Ohio State), Ricky Pearsall (Florida), LV Bunkley-Shelton (Oklahoma), and several other wide receivers and offensive linemen. Arizona State was able to aggressively attack the NCAA Transfer Portal to bring in some potential replacements like Emory Jones at quarterback, Xazavian Valladay at running back, Cam Johnson at wide receiver, and some other pass-catching threats plus some offensive line depth. Are all these moves enough to replace or even upgrade at the positions that lost the most? Host Richie Bradshaw is here to discuss just that on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast.

  • Arizona State Sun Devils football: Three questions on defense that must be answered by the end of training camp

Similar to the offense, the Arizona State Sun Devils football team has a lot of new faces on the defensive side of the ball. After losing several key players from 2021 to both the 2022 NFL Draft and the NCAA Transfer Portal, the 2022 Arizona State Sun Devils' defense will look very different from its 2021 counterpart. Unlike the offense, however, we aren't as concerned with how the defense is going to roll out for 2022. The defense has some important faces returning to the middle of the field in Merlin Robertson and Kyle Soelle. The defensive line and secondary both have some intriguing depth with the former perhaps being the deepest unit on the entire Arizona State Sun Devils football roster. The defense isn't without some questions that need answering, obviously. For one, how will this deep defensive line look? Will we see a core starting unit of veteran guys like Michael Matus, Nesta Jade Silvera, and Travez Moore? How much will young guns such as Omarr Norman-Lott or B.J. Green fit into the equation? We can't forget about the other several talented players behind them, as well, so how will this defense utilize its deep line? Meanwhile, at linebacker, we know that Robertson and Soelle will start, but who's the third linebacker next to them? Is it Kyle's brother Conner Soelle? Is it Will Shaffer? Is it Caleb McCullough? And finally, in the secondary, there are lots of fun faces to fancy throughout, but who will start on the boundary? Jordan Clark will have the nickel role to himself, but who could start outside? Timarcus Davis, Keon Markham, and Ro Torrence seem like the most likely guys, but could a youngster like Isaiah Johnson surprise? Host Richie Bradshaw tackles all these questions and more on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast.

  • Arizona State Sun Devils football: Three questions on offense that must be answered by the end of training camp

With training camp in full swing for the Arizona State Sun Devils football program, we can begin to have some of our biggest questions answered. When we look at the offense, we certainly have a seemingly endless list of questions that will have to be solved throughout the season and not just by the end of training camp. From who starts to what the offense looks like, we will be learning about this team all the way until the end of the 2022 season. There are certainly lots of intriguing plot lines that fans will be paying close attention to that won't be as stressful, such as the running back usage or the tight end emergence. The offensive tackle battle between Emmit Bohle and Isaia Glass will be a fun competition. Other plot lines have a bit more suspense if you will. How balanced is the offense going to look? How long will the leashes be for Sun Devil quarterbacks? How much trust will be placed in the pass catchers? Host Richie Bradshaw answers these questions and more on this edition of the Locked On Sun Devils podcast.
