Locked On Twins - Daily Podcast On The Minnesota Twins

The Twins' doubleheader in Detroit was rained out Friday, setting up another doubleheader Saturday and next Friday. With 28 games to go, the Twins have a 1/2 game lead over both Cleveland and Chicago in the A.L. Central.

In today's episode, we talk trade deadline and possibly targeting an outfielder or a starting pitcher. Nash thinks it's unlikely. Also, let's predict the rest of the schedule.

The Twins lost 4-2 Tuesday. Shane Bieber, the American League Cy Young favorite, started for Cleveland. He struck out 10 over six innings and allowed two runs. Rich Hill pitched well for the Twins, striking out five over five innings of one-run ball. Jorge Alcalá pitched the sixth and made a critical mistake to Francisco Lindor that turned into a two-run, game-winning homer.

Stingy right-hander Mike Clevinger was activated and will start Tuesday against José Berríos. This is a huge game. The Twins hold a 1.5 game lead over Cleveland in the Central. First pitch is at 6:10 p.m.

The Twins won a nail-biter Monday 3-2. Kenta Maeda started and pitched five strong innings with seven strikeouts. He was credited with the win and improved to 4-0 on the season. Nelson Cruz homered, Miguel Sanó stayed hot, and the bullpen shut it down in less-than-secure fashion. The Twins will be tasked with Shane Bieber Tuesday as they send Rich Hill to the mound. First pitch is at 6:10 p,m. CT.

The Twins closed up their season series against the Kansas City by winning two of three games at Kauffman Stadium. They lost Friday as Jake Odorizzi struggled and took a line drive off his ribs. The Twins bounced back, as they usually do, to win Saturday and Sunday and extend their lead in the division to 1.5 games.

Aaron Civale will start for Cleveland tonight versus Kenta Maeda.

José Berríos attacked and dominated Thursday in six dazzling innings. He allowed only one hit, walked one, and struck out 9. The Twins won 7-1 and took the series over Milwaukee, also winning the season series 4-2. They will open a three game set tonight at Kauffman Stadium against the Royals in Kansas City Friday.

The Twins lost 9-3 Wednesday night to the Milwaukee Brewers. Rich Hill was activated from the IL and started this game. He breezed through eight outs before hitting a brick wall with two outs in the third inning. He didn't make it through the inning and the Twins found themselves in an 8-1 hole by the fifth.

The series finale Thursday will send Brandon Woodruff to the mound to face off against José Berríos. Woodruff has been strong since 2019, posting a 3.54 ERA and 10.6 strikeouts-per-nine. Berríos is desperate for a good outing to improve on his 5.92 ERA.

Kenta Maeda pitched extraordinarily well Tuesday. He struck out eight straight batters, a new team record. He carried a no-hitter into the 9th inning before Eric Sogard hit a bloop single to centerfield. Maeda was pulled for Rogers with one on, no outs and a 3-0 lead. Rogers gave up a double and then walked Christian Yelich. Keston Hiura proceeded to single, then the Twins committed an error trying to turn a double play, and Milwaukee tied it up at 3.

The game lasted 12 innings thanks to Caleb Thielbar and Jorge Alcalá coming in clutch from the bullpen. Taking advantage of the new extra-innings rule, Byron Buxton began the 12th on second base and ended up scoring on a Jorge Polanco swinging bunt. The Twins won 4-3. The game was an emotional rollercoaster and will go down as one of the best in recent memory.

Nelson Cruz hit two more home runs Monday night in a 4-1 win over the Kansas City Royals. Cruz has eight homers on the year and ranks second to Tampa Bay's Brandon Lowe in most offensive statistics.

Also, Fernando TatÍs Jr. hit a grand slam in a 3-0 count with his team leading 10-1 in the late innings. MLB Twitter and the baseball world exploded in overwhelming support for the young superstar's swing.

The Twins took two out of three from Kansas City this weekend despite hitting just .208/.284/.364. The four game series concludes tonight with Matt Wisler opening against Kris Bubic for the Royals. Devin Smeltzer is the likely candidate to relieve for Wisler after 1-to-3 innings. Kris Bubic, a left-handed rookie, has a 5.40 ERA in 15 innings this year. Bubic relies mainly on a four-seam fastball and a changeup. His fastball has averaged 92 mph of velocity so far this year. The Twins will look to capitalize and win the series.
