Locked On Wild - Your Daily Minnesota Wild Podcast

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Seth reviews the 2020-21 season for Matt Dumba, Carson Soucy and Ian Cole.

For Dumba, we look at his numbers from last year to this year to see where Dumba and where he didn't. We look at how Dumba improved as the season progressed, and finished the year by playing his best hockey against Vegas in the playoffs. Our biggest question with Dumba is what happens this offseason? Does he end up going to Seattle in the expansion draft? Is he traded elsewhere to free up cap space for other extensions?

For Soucy, we discuss how he started the season slowly and finished playing some solid hockey. What do the stats tell us about Soucy's season? If Dumba is traded before the expansion draft is Soucy a player Seattle may look to select? If Dumba goes to Seattle, is Soucy ready for an expanded role?

We finish by reviewing the 2020-21 season of Ian Cole. We look at how Bill Guerin caught everyone off guard with the trade to bring Cole in, and how he ended up becoming a solid 3rd line defenseman for the Wild by season's end. We look at Ian's stats, and what we saw in his play to try to answer one big question: Would Cole be someone we should try to re-sign in the offseason?

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, we start by updating the Kirill Kaprizov contract extension situation after some national tweets made headlines. We look at what Kaprizov was actually doing over the weekend, and why this is simply a negotiation tactic by Kaprizov's agent. We look at if the KHL is a legitimate alternative after Kaprizov finally got to the NHL and how Bill Guerin will respond.

We then evaluate the 2020-21 season for Jared Spurgeon. We look at why Spurgeon is so underrated all the time and the things he does that impact every single game he plays in. We check some of his advanced stats, and look at what sort of increase in usage he could see if Matt Dumba and/or Ian Cole are both not on the roster next year.

We finish by looking at Ryan Suter's 2020-21 season. We look at how Suter has embraced not being the top defenseman on this team anymore, while also looking at how he can still be productive despite clearly losing a step. Can the Wild put him in better situations to minimize the number of times he gets put in unwinnable situations?

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Seth reviews the 2020-21 season for Nico Sturm, Nick Bjugstad and Nick Bonino.

For Sturm, we look at the numbers from his first full season in the NHL. We discuss what we liked about what Sturm brought to the lineup, where he can improve, and based on his numbers per 60 minutes, can we expect bigger things from Sturm if he gets more playing time?

For Bjugstad, we look at his 2020-21 numbers, and wonder if it makes sense to just have Bjugstad head elsewhere next year. While he did have some moments, Bjugstad didn't really contribute anything that a younger player with upside couldn't add on the 4th line next year.

We finish with Bonino, who had a very good season with the Wild and contributed in a bunch of different areas. Bonino helped solidify the power play, and is definitely worth looking to re-sign next season. But will the Wild be able to with limited funds and big extensions to hand out? We will find out!

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Seth reviews the 2020-21 season for Ryan Hartman, Zach Parise and Marcus Johansson.

For Hartman, we look at his numbers from last year to this year to see areas that Hartman improved in. We also look at the versatility Hartman brought this year by playing center, and which position Hartman is better served playing next year. What did we see from Hartman with the eye test? Where can he improve into next year?

For Parise, we look at what is the best course for Parise and the Wild after a disappointing year. We look at what he can still bring to the table if he's on the team, and where he excelled in the playoffs.

We finish by talking about Marcus Johansson, and what we liked and didn't like about his addition to the team. Is he someone that should be re-signed by the Wild? What did the stats tell us?

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Seth constructs starting lineups for the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Timberwolves to face off against the Wild in an on ice exhibition.

For the Vikings, how would the Wild stack up against Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen? Who is going to keep an eye on Dalvin Cook? Is there a more physical defensive pairing than Harrison Smith and Eric Kendricks? Danielle Hunter seems like the perfect choice to be in net for the Vikings squad. Who was snubbed?

For the Twins, the roster has a lot of veterans who were put on the team as specialists (such as Nelson Cruz as the extra attacker). Who is going to keep up with Byron Buxton on the outside? Is there a more perfect match than Willians Astudillo as the starting goalie?

For the Wolves, how did D'Angelo Russell not make the starting 6? Is Karl-Anthony Towns a better fit in net or at forward? Was Ricky Rubio born to be an NHL center? Let us know what you think of each team's starting 6!

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, we begin by rehashing the biggest offseason questions for the Wild. Where do things stand with contract extensions for Kirill Kaprizov, Kevin Fiala and Joel Eriksson Ek? Who are the most appealing targets for Seattle in the expansion draft? What positions will the Wild target in the NHL Draft? Will there be enough money left to sign any free agents?

We move then to the season evaluation for Mats Zuccarello. How were Zuccarello and Kaprizov able to develop such quick chemistry? With a better center, what does Zuccarello's production look like? We saw a lot of good things, and his stats based on the games he played were also pretty good, so does Zuccarello fit beyond his current contract?

We finish by looking at the 2020-21 season for Victor Rask? Is there any chance Rask improves his play or is this simply what he is at this point in his career? What line would Rask be better on? Is he being asked to do too much? We try to answer these and more questions regarding the Wild's biggest enigma.

Did we see a noticeable jump in play for Brodin from last year to this year? We did get a career high in goals from Brodin. What was the reason for his offensive outburst? What do the stats tell us about his play? What did we see ourselves that we liked? Most importantly, where does Brodin fit in for 2021-22? With the potential for losses among the defensive core, how much more will Brodin be relied upon to pick up the slack?

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Seth evaluates the 2020-21 season for Joel Eriksson Ek. What progress did JEEK made from last year to this season? He made a noticable improvement offensively and helped create the Wild's dominant defensive pairing with Jordan Greenway and Marcus Foligno. What do the stats tell us about his play? What did we see ourselves that we liked? Most importantly, what can Eriksson Ek do to improve in 2021-22? For Eriksson Ek it comes down to seeing another step up in his play next year. Can his line continue to frustrate top opposing players? Is JEEK a potential 30 goal scorer during an 82 game season? What will his contract extension look like?

On today's episode of Locked on Wild, Seth answers a ton of submitted questions. We start by looking at the potential for Kirill Kaprizov to sign a shorter contract and if the Wild need to potentially trade him or risk him leaving via free agency and getting nothing in return. On that note we look at other examples of when Minnesota teams tried to trade a star on his way out and got little to nothing in return. We also look at potential players that Seth wants to give Seattle in the Expansion Draft, including Zach Parise and Victor Rask. We look at potential center targets for the Wild, including Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. We also look at Eric Staal's legacy in Minnesota, and how he finished in a similar spot to Mikko Koivu except from an offensive perspective (expected to be on a higher line than he should have been). And we finish by discussing the most attractive players on the Wild roster, and sorry Kevin Fiala tops the list.
