How has trauma from your childhood showed up in your later life? Many children of immigrants have to work through culture shock, feelings of isolation, and begin to question their identity years after immigrating.
Today, I'm joined by the amazing Dr. Maylin Gonzalez. Dr. Gonzalez began working in eye care at the age of 15 where optics propelled her to go to school at the New England College of Optometry. After progressing as an optometrist in New York, Dr. Gonzalez craved sunshine and moved to Los Angeles to open up her practice, Eyed LA, in the Fall of 2012. Ultimately reinventing how eye care is provided, Dr. Gonzalez has recently opened up a new practice in Santa Monica and provides private one on one sessions, frame selections, eye exams, and consultations which are by appointment only for patients to receive optimal eye care and specialization. I am lucky enough to have Dr. Gonzalez as my optometrist and as I’ve learned her experiences as a Cuban American, I knew that many Amigas would relate to her life story.
Dr. Gonzalez’s story as a young child moving to a new country with a new culture will inspire you to look inwards at how your own family’s journey has impacted the way that you move through life. Throughout this episode, Dr. Gonzalez dives into the ways that her experience as a Cuban American child has impacted the rest of her life, why she decided to become an optometrist, and what she believes every Amiga can do to handle their shit and conquer their goals.
Tune in to Episode 46 of Amiga, Handle Your Shit, to learn Dr. Gonzalez’s inspiring story and how you too can do anything you desire when you put your mind to it!
