  • 021: YOLO and the Gift of Experiencing a Flexible Life With a Dynamic Identity

YOLO. You only live once. It’s a phrase that gets thrown around too commonly and sometimes can get quite out of hand. It’s an important part of the American culture and for some, it’s the motivation to chase the American dream. However, what if YOLO actually stood for something else? What if it wasn’t necessarily about trying to attack life at full throttle, but rather living a dynamic life without expectations? Sometimes, how we start out in life doesn’t necessarily dictate where we end up. In today’s episode, I discuss the value of wearing many hats, becoming a jack of all trades, and living with a dynamic identity.

We all have the power to harness our dynamic identities. Become the unexpected gift that you choose to be.

  • 019: Can Humility Solve the Obesity Epidemic or Is It The End of the World?

Obesity. I lived through it and after years of falling down and getting back up, I finally conquered it. However, when I was younger, I attributed my weight gain and binge eating to my genetics. I blamed myself for having “fat genes”, but as I got older, I realized that my excuse did not address the underlying problem. My experience with obesity was a result of stress, misinformation, and a lack of discipline. Thankfully, my issues forced me to make a change. I wanted to get back to baseline performance to create the foundation for my lifelong fitness goals. So I sought help and knowledge from my mentors, and began my journey on the road to fitness recovery. In today’s episode, I explore the power of humility in fitness and how we can use it to combat the obesity epidemic. It may not be the final solution, but I believe that humility, when used properly, can spark the fire for change.

We’re all capable of changing for the better. All it takes is one step forward.

  • 018: Deal With The Feedback Loop of Rejection And Do Better

Rejection. It ain’t the best feeling in the world, but it’s an important part of growing up. Rejection is the feedback loop of life, and we can choose to reframe these moments to drive personal development and growth. In today’s podcast episode, I discuss the importance of dealing with rejection and identifying constructive criticism versus imaginary incidents. Sometimes, our imagination can get the best of us and create stories of perceived rejection built upon false assumptions. However, by practicing mindfulness, we can address these negative feelings when they do arise unexpectedly. Lastly, I explore how rejection can impact our fitness and why it’s essential to handle rejection with a growth mindset.

Choose to do better to be better for others.

  • 017: Conquering Assumed Limits Through the Different Levels of Training

How do we know when too much IS too much? In today's episode we talk about how our assumed limits can limit our ability to push forward. Oftentimes, negative self-talk and doubt can hinder our capabilities to dream big and conquer our perceived limitations. Furthermore, it is essential to acknowledge and expand upon our realistic expectations by working with and not against the variables that life has given us. We all have different gifts, talents, and life experiences. Lean on your unique voice to enhance your environment and personal experiences. Lastly, I expand upon last week's discussion on my fitness protocol for fat loss and describe the different levels of training. By developing a better awareness of the different levels of training, we can then cultivate a training program that caters to progressive overload while reducing the chances of injury.

As Dr. Andy Galpin would say, "If you have a body then you are an athlete." We are all living through the beautiful game of fitness and life. Take every opportunity to take on challenges and defeat our assumed limits. Choose growth and move the game forward.

  • 016: The Mechanism of Fat Loss and The Art of Not Overthinking Nutrition

In today's episode, I reflect on Dr. Andy Galpin's lecture on the physiology of fat loss and how it shifted my fitness protocol for the better. Dr. Galpin's explanation of fat loss was a game changer for me and I firmly believe that anybody who is serious about their fitness goals needs to hear it. It's just that amazing and it's crazy that it took me so long to discover this wealth of knowledge. In addition, I expand on my nutritional game plan as I enter Q2 of my fitness protocol where I'll be focusing on reducing my fat stores and cutting weight. This time around, I've got science in my back pocket and I'm looking forward to troubleshooting the process and witnessing the feedback in realtime. Due to the dense nature of my fitness protocol, I will be reserving my approach to exercise and recovery for next week's episode.

Focus on foundation, gain experience through education, and achieve your goals by applying knowledge through intentional work.

  • 015: Weight Loss, The Value of Mentorships, and Fitness Protocols For Performance

In today’s episode, I open up and share my fitness protocol for dropping from 240 to 160 pounds over the course of one year and a half. Unlike previous attempts, the success of my weight loss while maintaining strength stemmed from the importance of baseline knowledge, developing a versatile fitness program, and staying committed to the athletic mindset. Furthermore, I discuss the value I gained from believing in my purpose, my “why”, for embedding fitness into my life. As we approach the summer, I thought it’d be fun to step back and reflect on the success and failures of my fitness journey and share the knowledge I’ve gained through my fitness mentors. I hope y’all enjoy this episode and I can’t wait to see you crush your own fitness goals.

  • 013: Do the Work That Others Aren't Willing To Do

In today's episode, I reflect on my part-time job during college flipping burger patties. Well, more like placing burger meat on a conveyor belt and sending it through a fiery broiler. Any guesses where I worked at? Here's a hint. "Have it your way." In addition, I talk about one of my favorite customers named Karen, which eventually became an internet sensation as an angry customer meme. You never forget your first challenging customer and the lessons that come with the experience. Nevertheless, it's essential to remember that tough jobs teach excellence and dirty jobs teach humility. Strive for quality, embrace humility, and do the work that others aren't willing to do.

  • 012: Dueling with Death and Understanding the Value of Luck

With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner, in today’s episode I discuss my perspective on luck and my duels with death. I’ve had plenty of close calls with death on the road, but nothing would prepare me for my battle with death at the hospital. During my last year at UC Davis, I was hospitalized for two weeks and suffered extreme illness. I didn’t know if I was going to make it and, as a just-in-case for a typical Catholic, my local pastor administered my last rites, prayers reserved for the end of one’s chapter. However, my story wasn’t ready to end, and good luck came back into my life. Was it bad luck that I ended up in that situation in the first place? Or was it good luck that I got to live another day? It’s all about perspective and it’s important to acknowledge that even bad luck runs out.

If you’re still alive, know that, with enough time, even your most challenging moments will pass and you’ll be greeted with a new day and the sun will rise, and shine, bright once again.
