What Is An Unraveling?
An unraveling means to undo twisted, knotted or woven threads. And the threads were woven deep, even since childhood. The threads of redemption, resurrection, the promise of hope, the failure of sin, the shame, the inadequacy, the guilt, and the never being enough. In looking back at my journal entries, they reflect a very tortured soul, looking to fix a problem that was created by the very people who claimed to be able to solve the problem. Your Story Matters... and so does mine. This week on The Allegory and Elm Podcast, Andrew shares his Unraveling Story and his deconstruction from Christian faith.
In reflecting back, this process of deconstruction was over a decade long and had many keystone moments which ultimately resulted in Andrew leaving Christianity. His spirituality, faith, and hope all remain in tact, however the framework and The Source of spirituality has changed. If you are in the process of questioning, please reach out. If you are firm in your faith and you completely disagree with us, please reach out respectfully. We would love to have a conversation about this as we are still very much in process.

Failures are just opportunities to grow. This week on The Allegory and Elm Podcast we are dropping one of our most important episodes yet. Often we can remain stagnant and wonder what we are missing. It seems like we should be happy. We have all the things in our lives that "should" make us happy and content, yet there is still something gnawing at us. A growth mindset is a way of living in which you BELIEVE you have the ability to change and GROW. A fixed mindset is the exact opposite. In a fixed mindset you feel like your cognitive, physical abilities, and skill sets are limited or fixed. Phrases like, "stay in your lane," or "stick to what you know," come from a fixed mindset. People in a fixed mindset often see criticism as critical rather than as constructive and something that they can learn from. So are we stuck, or do we have the potential to change? I guess that is entirely up to you!
If you want to go deeper into this topic, there is an amazing book called Mindset by Carol Dweck. It's only $10 on Amazon and we get a little monetary kickback if you use this link.

It is so easy to become stagnant on your growth journey. The siren song of mediocrity beckons and many follow its call. But we don't want that fate for you. So what is the antidote? Consistency! Today on The Allegory and Elm Podcast Katie and Andrew May discuss what it looks like to remain consistent in the face of adversity. What does it look like to show up regardless of whether you feel like it or not. Just. Show. UP! Show up for yourself. Show up for others and keep being true to who you are as you don't settle for staying exactly the way you are. You were meant for more. Consistency requires planning, a little bit of discipline, and creating small wins that can change your habits and even your beliefs. You will begin to make the impossible possible. WE BELIEVE IN YOU!

Expectations. "Expectations are just premeditated resentments." Often we put expectations on our partner, our children, and ourselves. If we can learn the art of tempering our expectations, we may find that we are just a little happier. Or at the very least that we aren't pissed off because someone "failed us again." This week on The Allegory and Elm Podcast Katie and Andrew May explore the pros and cons of expectations. Most of the times expectations, will leave us feeling unsatisfied or let down, but sometimes expecting more of ourselves leads to real growth. What are you expecting to get out of this episode?

A special thanks to our guests from Fools in Love Podcast Brandon and Meghan Giegling for coming on the cast today to discuss embracing discomfort. During a time in which we all seeking comfort in things like food, Netflix, and alcohol, we discuss what it looks like to go outside your comfort zone. Vulnerability is a key ingredient when getting outside of your comfort zone. We have to share our fears, our hopes, and our dreams. Sometimes that comes at a cost. We all have what it takes inside us, but we have to be willing to take the first step. We cannot sit and wait around to be chosen, we have to act, we have to choose, we have what it takes. "Just do it anyway!!"

Who do we want to be in 6 months, a year? Let's start being that person today. We don't have to live our lives with regret from past decisions we have made. Those decisions do not define us. We can be the architects of our own journey. We get to author our own story. This week in The Allegory and Elm Podcast, Katie and Andrew May discuss what it looks like to live your life with intention vs living your life with regret. One path leads you to a cycle of shame and not being good enough. The other path leads you to whatever you desire for yourself. Which path do you want to take?

How do we cope with a global pandemic? What toll is this crisis having on our mental health? Nurse Katie and Andrew explore coping strategies that are currently helping them in this difficult time for our nation. They also share the things they are doing to relieve stress and that are helping them while the whole world has been upended. Habits play a crucial role in our consistency and our ability to continue to show up in this world for ourselves and others. How do you want to show up in the world right now?
Meditation, journaling, and exercise are key components that have helped the May crew to stay sane given the current situation with being quarantined for what seems like will be 6-8 weeks in total. Madness can settle in if you allow it, but you must focus on what you CAN control, not what you CAN'T.

With the coronavirus causing the nation and the globe to be in a pandemic, we thought we would break from what we had planned to talk about and bring about some of our thoughts surrounding the coronavirus. We share more of the emotional side, how it is effecting business, and the economy. Katie tackles things from a nursing perspective and Andrew comes at it as a small business owner and entrepreneur. This is not an easy time for people, and we have found that chatting about our struggles is what really helps us during difficult times. Thanks for stopping by.

Many of us have sexual shame or baggage that we bring into our marriage and our relationships without even realizing it. Katie and Andrew May discuss the power behind voicing sexual shame, repression, and allowing yourself to heal in the process. Katie gives strategies for how to help cope with sexual shame through writing your younger wounded self a letter. Andrew opens up about a porn addiction and how he constantly felt shame and dirtiness around anything sexual during his formative years. This episode is another doozy, as The Mays continue to wrestle with the meaning of life and how we can Embrace Ourselves towards Wholeness.

So many podcasts we've listened to talk about sex, but really don't delve very deep. No pun intended. Some may consider it too private, and that is okay. We are trying to break down some of the stigma surrounding sexuality and that it's okay to be into what you're into as long as it is safe and consensual. In this episode we talk about how vital COMMUNICATION is to our sexuality. It is so important that we are communicating with our partner about what their needs and desires are while also respecting and honoring our own needs and desires.
