  • Ahmad Faraz - Legend of Urdu Adab

    Syed Ahmad Shah better known by his pen name Ahmed Faraz, (January 1931 – 25 August 2008) was a Pakistani Urdu poet, scriptwriter and chairman of Pakistan Academy of Letters. He wrote his poetry under pseudonym Faraz. During his lifetime, he criticized military rule and coup d'état in the country and was displaced by the military dictators. He was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-e-Imtiaz. On 25 August 2008, he died in Islamabad, and later Government of Pakistan conferred Hilal-e-Pakistan posthumously upon Faraz for his contribution to poetry and Urdu literature. (Source: Wikipedia)

  • Living Legend of Urdu Adab - Dr. Bashir Badr

    Bashir Badr is an Urdu poet extraordinaire, who has been felicitated with the Sahitya Academy Award and Padamshree. He was born on February 15th, 1935 at Ayodhya, India. He completed his B.A., M.A. and Ph D. from Aligarh Muslim University. He worked as a lecturer in the Aligarh Muslim University and later as the head of the department of Meerut College, Meerut. He is well versed not just in Urdu but also in  Persian, Hindi and English.

    He has published multitude of books. It is believed that he started writing Shers at the age of seven. He not only wrote poetry but served Urdu Adab by writing in periodicals, magazines and books on Urdu literature. Some of his work has been translated into English and French.

    In this episode I have shared few of my favorite ghazals, Sher and Geet of Manzar Sahab.

    Manzar Bhopali is a contemporary Urdu poet. He was born in Amravati, Maharashtra. During his teenage years, Manzar Sahab started taking interest in poetry and attended his first Mushaira at the age of 17. Over the course of 4 decades, he has penned more than a dozen books in Hindi and Urdu. 

    He has been blessed with a beautiful voice and recites ghazals very melodiously. He has won many awards and has participated in umpteen international mushairas. Yeh Sadi Hamari Hai, Zindagi, Lahu Rang Mausam, Laawa, Manzar Ek Bulandi Par, and Udaas Kyu Hu are some of his collections that have been published.
