Cognitive hardiness is a concept in psychology referring to a set of attitudes and beliefs helping individuals cope with stress and adversity. Considered part of the field of positive psychology, it studies factors contributing to human flourishing. Dr Kenneth Nowack is author of the 2021 paper, "Cognitive hardiness in coaching: Personality trait, skill, or outcome?" *
Cognitive hardiness, often viewed as a personality trait, is related to resilience, the ability to bounce back from difficult experiences.
Psychologist, Suzanne Kobasa, first developed the concept, based on 3 core beliefs or attitudes:
1. Commitment: The belief that one is invested in, and engaged with, the world and has a sense of purpose and meaning in life.
2. Control: The belief that one can influence and shape events in one's life, and that external factors do not solely determine outcomes.
3. Challenge: The belief in post-traumatic growth; that change and adversity, instead of being insurmountable obstacles, are opportunities for growth and development.
Overall, cognitive hardiness is an important concept in the study of resilience, coping, and mental health.

‘’If you're not delivering something that's really valued by people longer term, then you're not going to be in business for long. A lot of people view corporate purpose or organizational purposes as something that's nice to talk about. But in the last five years, it's become really critical and central to the core of profit and growth of a business. It's not just a nice-to-have more.

Former CEO of Oracle and other brands, Dan Silberberg, believes that being a C-Suite leader is, in the words of the Hero’s Journey, a Call to Adventure, to embark on a quest that challenges them and takes them out of their comfort zone. It takes courage and bravery, rigor and resilience.
In this episode, part 3 of a 6-part World-class Leader series, Dan connects Joseph Campbell's Hero’s Journey to the journey of a leader. All of the movies we love - Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings - are built off the plot framework of the Hero's Journey. Developing into a great leader parallels this Hero's Journey.
The Hero's Journey steps are:
1 Status quo
2 Call to Adventure
3 Refusal of the Call
4 Meeting the Mentor
5 Crossing the Threshold
6 Tests, allies, enemies
7 Approach to the inmost cave
8 The Abyss
9 The reward
10 The return
===
Internally we all have these parts - the controller, the critic, the judge, the provocateur, the fear-based part.
And this journey is really the discovery of all of that; and all of it is acceptable. All of it should be loved, be accepted and celebrated. That's who we are as human beings.
===
As your coach, my job is to show I care, that I'm heart centered, that the process is done with goodwill and with psychological safety.
===
Fill in the blank, “If you really knew me . . . " Most people will tell you the good things, but they wouldn't tell you the bad, because they fear you would judge them, you'd abandon them, you wouldn't like them, you'd be unacceptable.
We all have parts of ourselves we think are unacceptable. In point of fact, it's sharing those that makes vulnerability and intimacy.
===
This is how passionate it is to be on this journey. And what a privilege it is to be with others willing to risk at the same time. This is what really makes this Leader Council starting soon. Your journey will continue and this group of allies will be supportive.
===
A message from Host, Nina Sunday:

Join Dan Silberberg's Leader Council starting soon. It could be the most exciting professional development of your career and your life. He can help you unveil your true genius, your gifts and how to manifest them into the world.

Are you in Human Resources in Local Government? Want to win an HR Award like my guest this episode, Amanda Daly from Redland City Council, Queensland? This episode is a case study of what HR initiatives might attract a commendation from the Australian HR awards.
Amanda Daly is Head of People, Culture and Organizational Performance at Redland City Council, a Local Government organization with over 1000 employees, serving a community of over 150,000 people, situated on the coast of the state of Queensland, Australia, about 35 kilometers south of Brisbane, the state capital.
Amanda was included in a recent Australian HR Awards ‘’Best in HR’’ list. Each year the magazine identifies individuals who led exemplary initiatives in the HR space. Listen to hear about what actions drive employee engagement and pride in their role, efficiency and cost savings, customer service, community inclusivity and living the organisation values.
As well as a Bachelor of Commerce, Amanda Daly:
With a career in Council spanning over 20 years, coincidentally we discovered we both met almost 20 years ago at a Customer Service Institute of Australia awards dinner where her team won a Service award, back then.
What do the world's best Local Government workplaces have in common? Listen and be inspired.
WHAT WE DISCUSSED
- employee engagement survey called ‘My Say’
- ‘’light touch’’ service reviews – ask for ideas on how to save money and be more efficient.
- EVP – employee value proposition – we asked people what was great about working for Redland City
Council. It was about inviting people to share what they love about working there and to tell their stories on video.
- 2020 initiative to refresh the organisation values. The previous values were right for the time, but they wanted the
voice of the employee to be in the forefront of the eyes of the customer.
- Cultivating inclusivity by celebrating Quandamooka Day on Stradbroke Island.
- the award-winning Wellbeing Through Adventure initiative
- mindfulness walks

Are you ready to discover your true genius and begin your own journey to emerge as a truly great leader? This is the hero's journey. YOU are the hero.

This episode on Manage Self, Lead Others podcast with Dan Silberberg is Part 1 of a 6-part deep-dive, World-class Leader series. You can listen to Dan's earlier episodes at:
Episode 84: The Leader Operating System
Episode 91: The Leader's Inward Journey
What we discuss:
· Empathy, by itself, isn't that valuable. What's more valuable is Perceptual Intelligence.
· There is no consensus on what leadership is; there are many different definitions and ideas.
· The importance of self-awareness in understanding and changing our default patterns of behavior.
· By bringing our unconscious patterns to light, we can create new, more effective ones.
· Early experiences with deep emotional impact are examined to identify underlying paradigms.
· The paradigm is then owned and transformed to create a new outcome or paradigm.
· How childhood wounds can affect our behavior as adults and lead to limiting beliefs and impostor syndrome.
· Past criticism from a parent can lead to a person criticizing others as a way of coping.
· Micromanaging bosses may have a history of feeling out of control and needing to put in place controls to feel safe.

This episode, I welcome repeat guest, celebrity CEO, Jeffrey Hayzlett, Founder of the C-Suite Network, former Chief Marketing Officer at Eastman Kodak, and prime-time host on Bloomberg TV. Jeffrey and I talk about the updated version of his early book, ‘The Mirror Test’. Jeffrey shares some inspiring stories about how he changed mood and culture at Eastman Kodak.
Jeffrey Hayzlett also has a new ebook out, How To Survive The Recession, Never Waste A Good Crisis. Download it now from https://pages.c-suitenetwork.com/crisis
Five economists and a futurist were asked about what's happening with this upcoming recession that’s going to hit us across the world. In addition there’s multiple Thought Leaders who contributed some great suggestions.
Listen to Jeffrey Hayzlett’s ‘All Business’ podcast special episode 403 on the recession HERE:

Watch the special episode on the recession on ‘All Business’ on C-Suite TV HERE:

Jeffrey says, ‘They say it's going to be mild, but even in a mild recession, you could have ups and downs. And what I learned. in most recessions, there's great opportunity.’
TALKING POINTS
‘We have to set the cadence of our business and everybody talks about focusing on culture. Culture is important without question. But it takes a long time to build culture.
But if you focus on mood, you have a greater impact faster in changing the mood. It's easier to change the mood than it is to change the culture.
If I have everybody in the business who feel that our best days are behind us, there's nothing I can do to bring them into the present.
So what I do is I spend time changing the mood of the business; to make them feel like, ‘Hey, we can win, we can do these things’. Then that will impact culture, that will impact the bottom line, that will impact the top line, and that'll get us where we want to go a lot faster.’

Book: 'Strategy Realized: The Business Hierarchy of Needs' on Amazon
Jim Gitney held leadership positions his entire career. He’s been on boards of directors, in the C-Suite, managed manufacturing, marketing, engineering, quality and a host of other functional organizations.
During that time, he saw lack of strategic alignment and agreement throughout organizations he worked with, as well as poorly executed technology and business process. These were the common denominator to failed strategies.
Jim created the Business Hierarchy of Needs® in 2013 and uses it as the framework of designing and implementing strategy with great success since then.
