  • 211: Frank White | Shift Perspective With Astronaut Overview Effect
Using interviews with and writings by 29 astronauts and cosmonauts, Frank White shows how experiences such as circling the Earth every 90 minutes and viewing it from the moon have profoundly affected our space travelers' perceptions of themselves, their world, and the future. He shows how the rest of us, who have participated imaginatively in these great adventures, have also been affected psychologically by them. He provides a powerful rationale for space exploration and settlement, describing them as the inevitable next steps in the evolution of human society and human consciousness, as the activities most likely to bring a new perspective to the problems of life on Earth.

White goes on to consider the possible consequences of a human presence in space, both for the pioneers who settle there and for those who remain on Earth. He imagines how having a permanent perspective from outer space will affect our politics, our religion, our social relations, our psychology, our economics, and our hard sciences. He confronts the possibility of rebellion by a space colony and of contact with extraterrestrial beings. And, finally, he makes it clear that our fate is in our own hands, that we will shape our future in space effectively only by fashioning a new human space program, free of excessive nationalism and dedicated to the peaceful exploration of the space frontier.

Frank White, the space philosopher best known for The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution, is launching The Human Space Program through his new book, The Cosma Hypothesis: Implications of the Overview Effect (Morgan Brook Media) on March 12th, 2019. A short film called "Overview," based largely on his first work, has been seen over 8 million times online.

The Human Space Program describes an initiative that accounts for the realities and possibilities of the next step of space exploration as humanity migrates into the solar system.

White and his colleagues outline 16 content-specific task forces that the project plans to set up to explore key issues arising out of human expansion into our "solar neighborhood." These task forces would report back to a central organizing authority to construct a comprehensive, sustainable, and inclusive blueprint for exploring and developing the solar system.

The book includes a series of conversations with astronauts discussing their experiences in orbit or on the moon and their new perspective on the universe. White is well known for the in-depth and personal reporting he has done on this unique group of some 500 people and documenting the profound effect that space travel has had on many of them. Their enthusiastic and emotional messages serve as the basis for The Cosma Hypothesis, in itself an inspiring perspective on our species and the wonderful possibilities that lie before us.

Frank White's book, The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution, first published by Houghton-Mifflin in 1987, is now in its third edition, and is considered by many to be a seminal work in the field of space exploration and development. White is a co-founder of the Overview Institute and founder of the "Academy in Space Initiative," which launched at Framingham State University in April of 2016, and has evolved into the Human Space Program.

White is the author or coauthor of 14 books on topics ranging from space exploration to climate change. White is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a Rhodes Scholar. He earned his M.Phil. in Politics from Oxford University. White worked for Harvard University for 17 years and now teaches at the Harvard Extension School and Harvard Summer School.

Hall was raised in the McCulloh Street projects, in West Baltimore, and, despite his height, liked basketball from an early age. He attended Carver Vocational-Technical High School in Baltimore, where he helped the basketball team reach the state finals. He played at the Catonsville campus of the Community College of Baltimore County for a year without spending much time on court, but dropped out of college to help support his mother. • 208: Dr. Steven Gundry | Reverse Chronic Disease With Nutrition & Health
NYT Bestselling author of The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in "Healthy" Foods That Cause Disease & The Longevity Paradox: How to Die Young At a Ripe Old Age.

STEVEN R. GUNDRY, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.C.C., is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Dr. Gundry completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan and served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health. There, he invented devices that reverse the cell death seen in acute heart attacks; variations of these devices subsequently became the Gundry™ Retrograde Cardioplegia Cannula. It has become the world's most widely used device of its kind to protect the heart from damage during open-heart surgery. After completing a fellowship in congenital heart surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, in London, Dr. Gundry was recruited as Professor and Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. There, he and his partner, Leonard Bailey, pioneered infant and pediatric heart transplantation. Together, they have performed more such transplants than any other surgeons in the world.

During his tenure at Loma Linda, Dr. Gundry pioneered the field of xenotransplantation, the study of how the genes of one species react to the transplanted heart of a foreign species. He was one of the original twenty investigators of the first FDA-approved implantable left ventricular assist device (a kind of artificial heart). Dr. Gundry is also the inventor of the Gundry Ministernomy, the widely used minimally invasive approach to aortic- or mitral-valve repair, the Gundry Lateral Tunnel, a "living" tissue that can rebuild parts of the heart in children with severe congenital heart malformations; and the Skoosh™ venous cannula, the most widely used cannula in minimally invasive heart operations.

One of the fathers of robotic surgery, as a consultant to Computer Motion (now Intuitive Surgical), Dr. Gundry received early FDA approval to use robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for coronary artery-bypass and mitral-valve operations. He holds patents on devices for connecting blood vessels and coronary artery bypasses without sutures, as well as for repairing the mitral valve without the need for sutures or a heart-lung machine. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASIAO), and was a founding board member and treasurer of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS). He recently completed two successive elected terms as President of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Desert Division.

Dr. Gundry has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the American Surgical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of numerous other surgical and medical societies. He is also the author of more than three hundred articles, chapters, and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals on surgical, immunology, genetic, nutrition, and lipid investigations. He has operated in more than thirty countries, including charitable missions to China, India, and Zimbabwe.

Inspired by the stunning reversal of coronary artery disease in an "inoperable" patient, using a combination of dietary changes and nutriceutical supplements, in 2001, Dr. Gundry changed the path of his career. An obese, chronic "diet" failure himself, he adapted his undergraduate Yale University thesis to design a diet based on evolutionary genetic coding, which enabled him to reverse his own medical problems. In the process, he effortlessly lost 70 pounds. The equally astonishing results from following what he came to call Diet Evolution in several of his staff led Dr. Gundry to accept a position in Palm Springs where he could devote his efforts to disease reversal.

No longer satisfied with repairing the damage of chronic diseases, since 2002, Dr. Gundry founded and has served as Medical Director of The International Heart and Lung Institute in Palm Springs, California, which serves patients referred from across the nation. He is also Founder and Director of The Center for Restorative Medicine, part of the Institute. Its mission is to prevent and reverse the chronic diseases of "ageing" with diet and nutriceutical interventions, using surgical intervention for heart and vascular disease as a last resort.

Dr. Gundry lives with his wife, Penny and their four dogs, George, Bella, Black Pearl, and Fanny Foo Foo in Palm Springs and Montecito, California. His two grown daughters live nearby.

  • 207: Justin Bariso | The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
In this age of social media attacks, constant distraction, and rampant corruption, a high emotional intelligence quotient, or EQ, is more important than ever. Justin Bariso brings the concept of emotional intelligence up to date and into the real world, combining scientific research with high-profile examples and personal stories.

For example, in EQ Applied you'll:
    - examine one of the most famous business stories of all time--Steve Jobs's exit and return to Apple--from a completely different angle...and reveals a major lesson in the process.
    - learn how to control your emotional reactions--and see how a modern day "miracle" brought this ability to life.
    - learn how to break bad habits and escape "emotional hijacks."
    - see the power of emotional influence in action--illustrated through powerful stories from the FBI's former lead kidnap investigator, a famous singer, and many more.
    - discover how emotional intelligence can be used for evil--and how you can protect yourself.

Learn how to make emotions work for you, instead of against you. That's EQ Applied.

Justin Bariso is an author, speaker, consultant, and one of Inc.com's most popular columnists. His thoughts on leadership, management, and emotional intelligence have been featured by TIME, CNBC, and Forbes, among others. He has been recognized repeatedly by LinkedIn as a "Top Voice" in management and workplace culture.

Raised in a multicultural environment, Justin learned to see the world through different sets of eyes. He was fascinated by the way a single news report could inspire very different emotional reactions in others, based on factors like their age, background, and upbringing. After spending a decade in management for a major nonprofit, he moved to Europe and began his own consulting agency, where he's worked with a wide range of companies from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies.

Today, Justin focuses on helping others harness the power of emotion for good.
