Mark Your Calendars for an FBI-Free Pride Near You! Plus, Prominent Hong Kong Queer Activist Jimmy Sham Freed From Prison!

Listen Later

We know y’all’s FYPs are full of queer content. Vico’s got the PRIDE HUNTY TikTok audio stuck in their head — and now ours, too. And Nay may relate to not being a “go to pride” gay (that’s on anxiety!!) but we are not f*****g with “I don’t need to put it in everyone’s face” type of gay. I mean, look at the name of this pod. Look at the month we’re in! We love being queer and Nay and Vico get into some of their reasons why!

In GAY headlines for GAY month, we’re giving a quick rundown of big pride parade dates around the country. If you need a quick refresher, pride began after the Stonewall riots of June 1969. Now, more than half a century later, pride parades have become commonplace in major cities across the USA… except, this year’s feels different. For one, it’s the 10th anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges, which made same-sex marriage legal nationwide. For another, punk ass corporations have been pulling out of pride events in deference to Trump’s bigoted agenda. But that just means we’re getting back to our roots. After all, pride began as a protest. So go steal some bricks from those whack ass corporations and show up for the entire rainbow — but especially for trans folks, whose rights are being stripped away under the Trump administration.

Oh, and speaking of people we don’t want at pride? The FBI. Leaked emails from the agency stated that, “there should be no official FBI actions, events, or messaging regarding Pride Month.” Yet somehow, this stance, “in no way lessens the FBI’s commitment to serve and protect every American in our country or welcoming colleagues from all walks of life.” Riiiiight. The FBI has participated in pride events in the past but frankly, who will even notice they’re missing this year? Now, if you want to dress up as a sexy FBI agent and get into some roleplaying, you have Vico’s attention…

And speaking of protest, the Hong Kong pro-democracy and gay rights activist Jimmy Sham has just been released after four years in prison. Now, you’re gonna wanna know Jimmy because he is MAJOR. In 2019, Sham made international headlines by organizing some of the biggest anti-government protests of that year — including a march that drew an estimated 2 million people. In 2021, he was arrested alongside 46 other activists for their roles in organizing an unofficial primary election. While he was released just this past Friday, Sham’s four-year incarceration didn’t stop his activism. Namely, he brought a case to Hong Kong’s top court, pushing for legal recognition of his marriage, which had been registered overseas. This led to a landmark ruling that required the Hong Kong government to create a framework to recognize same-sex partnerships. Like we said: MAJOR!

Nay and Vico also keeps us in the loop by answering the question:  What can you do that you could not do a year ago? And before you go,  don't forget: if you are gonna be in Los Angeles on June 12th, stay tuned to see how you can win two tickets to our very own Vico Ortiz's solo show happening on June 12th at 8:00 PM as part of Fringe Fest! Spoiler… the show is GAYYYY.
