  • For Those Who Have Some Fears About Their Family Growing
Three honest fears about adding another child, and the Scriptures that help us face them together.

    About This Episode

Recorded while we were expecting our fourth child, this episode is for anyone who feels some fear about their family growing. Jennifer honestly shares three fears she has wrestled with: not being able to handle the demands of the home, missing out on time with the kids we already have, and losing personal time. Instead of brushing those fears aside, we open God's Word and let it speak to each one. God has not given us a spirit of fear, children are a heritage from the Lord, and His grace is sufficient for us, because His power is made perfect in weakness. Aaron also speaks directly to husbands about cultivating a safe home and giving their wives real time to recharge.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

Fear #1 — not being able to handle the demands of the home
Fear #2 — missing out on time with the kids you already have
Fear #3 — losing personal time
Embracing weakness — God's grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect in weakness
Being present — you will miss some things, so be intentional when you are there
A word to husbands — cultivate a safe home and actively give your wife time to recharge

  • Does God Have a Calling for My Marriage? 6 Callings Couples Share
Six callings every Christian marriage already shares, from prayer and forgiveness to purity and generosity.

    About This Episode

Many couples wonder whether God has a specific calling for their marriage. In this episode we share that every Christian marriage already has one, and we walk through six callings that all marriages share: prayer, love, forgiveness, trust, purity, and generosity. For each calling we open the Scriptures and share honestly from our own story, including how pornography cost Aaron spiritual authority, how Jennifer used unforgiveness as a way to control, and how she fought tithing while we were in debt. Love is a command, not just a feeling, and prayer isn't preparation for the battle, prayer is the battle. We pray this encourages you to step into what God has already called your marriage to.

  • How to Encourage Your Spouse In Times Of Doubt & Fear
What you fear has the most power in your life. How to help your spouse through seasons of doubt and fear.

    About This Episode

Times of doubt and fear will come, and how we handle them matters. We start by sharing two scary moments from our own life, rolling our vehicle and a white-knuckle 16-hour bus ride in Africa, and then talk about how to encourage your spouse when doubt and fear rise up. What you fear has the most power in your life, so we look at what triggers fear, from stepping into ministry, to feeling not good enough like Moses, to a lack of control. Then we share practical ways to help: knowing and speaking Scripture over your spouse, stopping to pray with thanksgiving, and bearing one another's burdens with sensitivity rather than telling them to get over it.

  • We Create A Family Mission Statement
We build our family mission statement live, from core values to "we're the Smiths and we do hard things."

    About This Episode

Having a mission statement for your family isn't required, but it can be very beneficial for creating and maintaining the culture of your home. We had never made one before, so after hearing from several interview guests how much it transformed their families, we decided to create ours live while you listen. We brainstorm the core values we want to define the Smith home, name the phrases we already find ourselves repeating to our kids, and look to Scripture to anchor it all. It's honest and unscripted, and we hope it gives you a simple starting point for casting vision with your own family. Remember, it's an ongoing process meant to unify your family, not a rulebook.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Extraordinary, food, learning, and wisdom — the values that make your family yours
We do hard things — naming the phrases you already repeat to your kids
Self-control — the character you want to cultivate at home
Anchoring it in Scripture — generosity, the Great Commission, and John 17
An ongoing process — why a mission statement unifies rather than becoming a list of rules

  • Can I Fall Out Of Love In My Marriage?
Why "falling out of love" is a myth, and why the opposite of biblical love isn't hate, it's apathy.

    About This Episode

Is love something we can fall in and out of? Can I still be in love if I don't feel like it? What if I'm not happy in my marriage anymore? In this episode we tackle those questions head on. Drawing from Gary Thomas's book Sacred Marriage, we explain why the phrase 'falling out of love' is so deceptive: it takes choice and responsibility out of love and leaves us at the mercy of our feelings. We look at the most common reasons couples feel love has faded, and then point to Jesus in Gethsemane as the model of a love that chooses commitment. The opposite of biblical love isn't hate, it's apathy.

    In This Episode

The myth of falling out of love — how the phrase strips love of choice and responsibility
Feelings vs. commitment — can you still love when you don't feel like it?
Tough times and unmet needs — why hard seasons can make love feel gone
Unmet expectations and discontentment — how they quietly erode a marriage
Chasing happiness and comfort — why they make a poor foundation for love
Love modeled in Gethsemane — choosing an aggressive, committed love like Christ's
Fighting apathy — pursuing intimacy, keeping an eternal perspective, and practicing discipline
The gospel is at stake — remembering what your marriage represents

Our book Marriage After God is the fruit of saying yes to God again and again, and in this episode we want to invite you to do the same. Every Christian marriage has a unique role in God's kingdom, and there is no substitute for yours. Each of us brings different gifts and resources that God has given, so we encourage you to take inventory of what you have and steward it for Him. We also invite you to become a Marriage After God Movement Starter.

Quote From Marriage After God Book
“As men and women, husbands and wives, marriages that claim the name of Christ, and desire to walk in His will and His ways, we must never forget that our Lord and Savior is coming back for us, His bride, and He will do so in a miraculous way. While we are waiting for His return, we must let this knowledge of His testimony and second coming be the fuel that ignites in us an unquenchable fire to boldly chase after God’s will for our marriages. The beautiful and imminent return of our King is the very thing that motivates us to move beyond our comfort into the amazing, extraordinary, powerful, world-changing, “good works” that God has prepared for each one of us since before time began.”
    Prayer
    Dear Lord,
We pray we would never stop chasing boldly after You! As husbands and wives who love you, our prayer is that we would impact this world and build your kingdom for your name sake! Thank you for equipping us and empowering us through your Holy Spirit to do all of the wonderful works that you have for us to do so that your will and purpose is fulfilled. We love you Lord! We praise you and we glorify your name! May our marriages reflect your divine love and May your gospel be spread! We pray our hearts would be sensitive to your leading as you show us the ministry work you have for our marriages to accomplish.
    In Jesus’ name, amen!

"A husband and wife chasing after God knows every aspect of their marriage is for proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, they are not ashamed to share about it, and they are confident in the impact they are making in the world around them." - Marriage After God book
"The two of you serving God together will always make a greater impact than the two of you could make alone striving for your own accomplishments and happiness."
    - Marriage After God book
    Prayer:
    Dear Lord,
Thank you for the gift of companionship. Marriage is such an intimate friendship that blesses us. We desire to draw closer to each other and to use this intimate bond to bless your name. Thank you for being intertwined in our relationship and at the center of it. You are the reason we are stronger together. Please continue to strengthen us as a cord of 3 strands. We pray that you would use us to do hard things as we build up your body and build up your kingdom. Be our strength as we persevere. May we be intentional in encouraging each other in marriage so that we do not grow weary. We pray against the enemy. We pray against his evil ways. Thank you for being our refuge and our shield. Thank you for equipping us and empowering us to stay strong and to fulfill your will. May your will be done in us and through our marriage.
