  • The Parable of the Good Samaritan
What if Jesus is the Samaritan and we are the man left half dead? A gospel-centered reading of Luke 10

    About This Episode

In this episode, we discuss a powerful and edifying way to interpret the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Jennifer shares how God answered her question about drawing wisdom from Scripture: after reading Luke and the story of the rich young ruler on the drive to church, a man at our home church taught on the Good Samaritan from the same book. His teaching reframed the parable through the gospel. The Jewish hearers would never have seen themselves as the Samaritan. We are actually the man left half dead who cannot save himself, and Jesus is the Samaritan who pays a high price to rescue us. We close by talking about taking up our cross and why our charity should flow from what we have received.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

    In This Episode

An answered prayer — How God spoke to Jennifer through Luke and a teaching at home church.
The rich young ruler — The Luke passage that set up the lesson.
Who are we in the story? — Why the original hearers would never see themselves as the Samaritan.
The man left half dead — We are the robbed man who cannot save himself.
Jesus is the Samaritan — He pays a high price and seats the beaten man on his own animal.
A picture of propitiation — Seeing the gospel inside the parable.
Take up your cross — Matthew 16:24 and following Jesus.
Charity from gratitude — Giving from what we've received, not from guilt or a need to save the day.

    Scripture Referenced

    Luke 18:18-34
    Luke 10:25-37

    About This Episode

There are many reasons you might want to make some side money, and getting out of debt was the reason we did. In this episode, we share some unique and creative ways to make extra cash today. We start with how the Bible teaches us to view money, so our minds and hearts are in the right place: money is a tool to steward, not a strong tower, and the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Then we share a long list of practical side-income ideas, along with our own story of paying off about $20K in school loans before we had kids by selling photography and website themes. We close by praying that our finances would honor God.

  • The Power Of Confession In Your Marriage & How To Do It.
Why confessing to your spouse matters, why minimizing is lying, and how confession brings healing

    About This Episode

The Bible tells us in James 5 to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another, that we may be healed. Confession is one of the most powerful gifts God has given us. It is by confession that we are saved (Romans 10:10), and it is by confession that we are healed. When we confess our sin, we are saying that God is right and we are not. But confession is hard because it is exactly the opposite of what our flesh wants. Confession exposes our nakedness, and our instinct is to cover it up. When we hide, our sins and wrong ways of thinking live on instead of being cut away. In this episode, we talk about the power of confession and how to do it well in marriage.

Why confession is powerful — By confession we are saved (Romans 10:10) and healed (James 5:16).
Walking in the light — 1 John 1 and bringing sin out of hiding.
One body — Why your spouse is the offended party when you sin.
More than accountability — Confessing only to others can leave darkness in your marriage.
Minimizing is lying — Aaron on learning to confess his pornography struggle fully.
Confession vs. repentance — Understanding the difference between the two.
Receiving a confession — Making a safe space, choosing the right time, and forgiving as Jesus teaches in Luke 17:3-4.
Their response isn't yours to control — Confessing without managing your spouse's emotions.
Killing the flesh — Taking up your cross and finding healing through confession.

  • Can I Stay Married If It’s Not Making Me Happy?
On today's bonus episode, we are sharing our interview on the 4:13 podcast. Jennifer Rothschild digs in with us about what it looks like to learn to love even when we are not happy and how being obedient to God's way even when the feelings are fading can, in turn, bring the feelings back and make us stronger than ever.
Here is a little about Jennifer Rothschild and the 4:13 Podcast.
You’ll find practical encouragement and biblical insight to help you live the “I Can” life of Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
    Jennifer:

  • Our Marriage Testimony: Painful Sex, Pornography, and Near Divorce
Painful sex, porn addiction, and near-divorce almost ended our marriage. This is how God saved it.

    About This Episode

This is the story that makes us, well, us. We look back on our first few years of marriage, including what we went through and how God saved us. We met at a teen Bible study, Aaron gave his life to God alone in his car at 17, and we dated with marriage in mind. But our first four years were brutal. We physically could not have pain-free sex, even though we were both healthy, and that pain amplified Aaron's pornography addiction and drove us toward divorce. We vulnerably share what turned things around: a marriage ministry small group, a moment when Aaron chose to love Jennifer unconditionally, and a discovery that finally helped us heal.

Pornography addiction — how the pain amplified Aaron's struggle and pushed us toward divorce

The Gethsemane moment — Aaron choosing to love Jennifer unconditionally: "not my will but yours"
Accepting your bride — "are you willing to accept the bride that you've already accepted?"
The discovery — how parabens in Jennifer's face wash may have been the physical cause, and pain-free sex within a week of switching products

  • Your Marriage Is a Ministry with Dave and Ashley Willis
Aaron and Jennifer join Dave & Ashley Willis to talk marriage as ministry and discipling kids at home.

    About This Episode

This bonus episode is a crossover conversation from the Naked Marriage podcast, where we sat down with Dave and Ashley Willis to talk about seeing your marriage as a ministry. Aaron shares the moment a friend called us out for bickering, and the moment when, right when he was ready to give up on his wife, God brought him to his knees and changed his heart toward Jennifer. Together we talk about discipling our kids: they imitate everything we do, so parents need to model repentance and lead family Bible time, even if it starts with a single verse. Your marriage is already a ministry. It's not me and you against the world, it's me and you for the world.

    About Dave & Ashley Willis

Dave & Ashley Willis have become some of America's most trusted teachers on marriage. Their books, blogs, videos and speaking events have been reaching millions of couples worldwide. They are part of the MarriageToday team, which is the largest marriage-focused ministry in the USA, and they host the Naked Marriage podcast.
