  • Why A Heart Of Thanksgiving Is Important For A Marriage After God
Unthankfulness is pride in disguise. Five practical ways to build a thankful heart in your marriage.

    About This Episode

Thankfulness in marriage is necessary, and unthankfulness is destructive. In the season of thanksgiving, the meaning of thankfulness can easily be lost. Aaron and Jennifer look at why a thankful heart strengthens a marriage and how unthankfulness, which is really pride, hurts a couple's witness and ministry. They share honest stories, from Aaron's red cowboy boots to eating whatever families served them as missionaries in Africa, and look at Scripture that calls us to give thanks always and for everything, even in hard seasons. Thanking God in hard things is an act of trust. They finish with five practical tips for walking in thankfulness every day.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

    In This Episode

Thankfulness strengthens marriage — seeing your spouse with eyes of gratitude instead of unmet expectations.
The red boots — Aaron's Christmas story about wanting a bike and receiving boots.
Pride vs. humility — why unthankfulness says "I deserve more."
Hurting our witness — Aaron's restaurant critic moment and what our kids learn from us.
Thankful for everything — Ephesians 5 and thanking God even for the hard things.
Trust — how unthankfulness tells God we know better, and what Job teaches us.
God's will for you — rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.
A sacrifice of thanksgiving — magnifying God with a thankful heart.
Five tips — say it out loud, remind each other, thank God in prayer, make it a conversation, and post Scripture on your walls.
    Bonus — stop complaining.

  • Making Time Count In Your Marriage
You can't make time, only trade it. Guarding your hours from social media, hurry, and comparison.

    About This Episode

Everyone has the same amount of time in a day, yet many of us have lost a healthy perspective on how we use it. Aaron and Jennifer discuss how valuing time correctly makes us more effective in the ministry God has for our marriages. We can't actually make time; we can only sacrifice one thing to capture time for another. They talk honestly about wasting time on social media, the comparison trap, and the pressure to hurry, and they look at how Jesus withdrew to pray and what Ephesians 5 says about making the best use of the time. Do we need to slow down? And what does God's Word say about our time?

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

    In This Episode

You can't make time — you can only trade one thing for another.
Finite people — living within 24 hours a day.
Social media — how scrolling quietly steals our time.
The comparison trap — building an impossible "perfect person" from many people's feeds.
Jesus withdrew to pray — the example of Luke 5.
Redeem the time — Ephesians 5:15-16 and walking wisely.
Stop hurrying your kids — the shoe-tying moment.
Yes and no — evaluating what deserves your time.
Lay it at His feet — giving your to-do list to the Lord.

  • We Ask Each Other Random Questions About Finances & Money
Broke missionaries, a regretted paintball gun, and why Aaron is done with credit cards: a candid money Q&A.

    About This Episode

We are all on a journey with money, and the Bible talks a lot about it, so it is important for couples to be willing to discuss money with each other and how to manage it. In this episode, Aaron and Jennifer ask each other questions about money and give candid, on-the-spot answers. They discuss their individual views of and relationship with money, how they were raised with it, what they were taught, and the fears that surround it. Along the way they share stories from their broke missionary days, Aaron's stance on credit cards, a purchase he regrets, and what generosity looks like beyond dollars.

  • Let's Talk About Social Media And Marriage
A child's question, "Do you love your phone more than me?", and the phone boundaries that followed.

    About This Episode

We haven't figured out how to perfectly navigate social media, and in this episode we admit it. Aaron gets personal about his own addiction to his phone, and we share the stories that convicted us most, from a friend wondering if she was talking to herself while we scrolled to our five-year-old asking if we love our phones more than him. We look at what Scripture says about not being dominated by anything, then walk through the strategies we are putting in place to build healthier habits with social media in our home. There is good that can come from social media, but it should never be more important than your spouse's heart.

Confession — Why we both slipped into addictive, unhealthy social media habits.
Convicting moments — A friend asking "am I talking to myself?" and our son asking if we love our phones more than him.
Not dominated by anything — What 1 Corinthians 6:12 teaches about things that are lawful but not helpful.
Idleness — What Proverbs 19:15 and Proverbs 31:27 say about filling our time with things that bear no fruit.
Full access — Sharing passwords and giving each other permission to ask why you follow someone.
Guarding purity — Deleting unnecessary online relationships and refusing private messages with the opposite sex.
Being present — Proactively putting phones away so the people in the room know they matter more.

  • 7 Traits of a Spiritual Leader
Be a thermostat, not a thermometer: seven marks of a husband who leads his home the way God designed.

    About This Episode

Spiritual leadership, or spiritual headship, in the home comes from the idea that God designed marriage to operate in a certain order, and His design, when walked in, comes with blessing and security. In this episode Aaron lays out seven traits of a spiritual leader, rooted in Ephesians 5:23 and in authority that flows from God's Word rather than from a husband's demands. We talk about generosity, encouragement, leading by example, teaching the Bible to your kids, keeping an even temperament, taming the tongue, and seeking God's kingdom first. Jennifer adds practical encouragement for wives who long for their husbands to lead spiritually.

Biblical headship — Why a husband's authority comes from God's Word, not from demanding it (Ephesians 5:23).
Generous and others-focused — Leadership that looks to serve rather than be served.
Encouraging — Aiming for roughly 90 percent affirmation and 10 percent correction.
Leading by example — Modeling the life you want your family to live.
Teaching the Word — Knowing Scripture and teaching it to your children in family Bible time.
Even temperament — Being a thermostat that sets the climate instead of a thermometer that reacts to it.
The tongue and the kingdom — Controlling what you say and seeking God's kingdom first.
For wives — Encouraging a passive husband with earnest biblical questions rather than criticism.

    About This Episode

In this episode we discuss three reasons people are tempted to become people pleasers, where it comes from, how it hurts our marriages, and how it hurts our ministries, with honest stories from both of us and a look at what Galatians 1:10 and Matthew 6:1 say about living for God's approval.

Our first postpartum seasons were chaos; the fourth was peaceful. The decision we each made before baby came.

In this episode we look back at our past experiences of postpartum and explain why this fourth time around was so different. We specifically share a decision we both made before the baby was born and how it impacted the wellness of our whole family. Postpartum brings crying, sleepless nights, pain, and a jolt to daily routines, but we realized that being a team is critical in this season.
