  • 10 Fun Questions to Ask Your Spouse on Date Night
Del Taco, a screaming-band past, a three-hour massage, and the hardest lesson of being a wife. Steal these.

    About This Episode

We heard each of our questions for the first time while recording so our responses would be genuine and off the cuff. It turned into a fun and surprisingly meaningful conversation. We laugh about favorite fast food, dessert, what we would do with three free hours, and Aaron's days singing in a metal band. Then we go deeper, talking about how we envision our family in ten years, what we would tell our 18-year-old selves, the hardest lesson Jennifer has learned as a wife, and the one piece of advice Aaron would give husbands who want to lead their wives better. We share all ten questions below so you can use them on your next date night.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

  • What It's Like Being A Part of a Home Church
From megachurches to about 10 families in a living room: elders, a cappella hymns, and phones left in the car.

    About This Episode

We grew up in what many would call megachurches, and today we are part of a small home church with about ten families. In this episode we share our first-hand experience of what it is really like. We talk about how our church is structured with elders and leadership, what a gathering looks like with kids staying alongside their parents, how that pushed us to be intentional about training our children, singing hymns a cappella, how teaching is shared among the men with elders guarding sound doctrine, and the long potluck fellowship that fills our Sundays. Whatever your church looks like, we hope this reminds you that the church is the people you gather with.

    In This Episode

Where we came from — Growing up in megachurches and landing in a home church of about ten families.
Structure — How elders and leadership work in a house church setting.
Kids in the room — Why children stay with their parents and how that shaped our training at home.
A cappella worship — Singing hymns together without a band.
Shared teaching — Men coming prepared to teach, with teaching elders correcting errors.
Fellowship — Multi-hour potlucks, phones left in the car, and Sundays kept open.
The big idea — The church is the people you gather with, not the building.

    About This Episode

In this episode we share our personal struggle with physical intimacy in the first four and a half years of our marriage. We thought we had done everything right by saving ourselves for marriage and believed God owed us a healthy sex life, but painful intercourse meant we couldn't consummate our marriage. We talk honestly about broken expectations, the sexual sin we each brought into marriage, the doctor visits, the bitterness, and how prayer kept us going. Then we share the turning point, when God reminded Aaron of Jesus in Gethsemane, and the surprising discovery that changed everything for us physically. Listen and see how God used this trial to draw us closer to Himself and to each other.

  • How to Live with an Unbelieving Spouse
Four biblical steps for the believer married to a spouse who doesn't know or obey God

    About This Episode

Being unequally yoked means one spouse is walking in obedience to God and the other is not, and it can amplify every other struggle in a marriage. Prompted by a listener's question, Aaron and Jennifer speak to husbands and wives married to a non-believer, or to a spouse who claims to be a Christian but doesn't obey God's Word. The most important thing in that marriage is salvation, and the desire to see your spouse come to know and love God matters more than happily ever after. They walk through four biblical steps and encourage the believing spouse that there is hope, and it starts with the one who knows God.

See your spouse rightly — a brother or sister who needs salvation
Don't leave — why 1 Corinthians 7:12-16 says the unbelieving spouse can be won
Pray for them and for yourself — only God changes hearts, so ask for their salvation and your own endurance and peace
Be an example — how 1 Peter 3:1-2 describes a spouse won without a word by pure conduct

  • What To Do After a Fight
Why fights should be rare for Christian couples, and biblical steps to reconcile when one happens

    About This Episode

Fights are more common in Christian marriages than they should be. Prompted by a listener's question, and honest that they had just had a hard conversation of their own before hitting record, Aaron and Jennifer explain why fighting should be a rare occurrence for a husband and wife walking in the Spirit. When a fight does break out, the goal is reconciliation, unity, and oneness. They walk through the biblical steps that help them get there: remembering who you are in Christ, pursuing reconciliation instead of winning, not letting the sun go down on anger, confessing and praying together out loud, letting go of the record of wrongs, and even holding hands to reconnect.

    In This Episode

Why fighting should be rare — walking in the Spirit makes a fight nearly impossible
Live as a new creation — putting off anger and putting on love from Colossians 3 and Ephesians 4
Ambassadors of reconciliation — what 2 Corinthians 5 means for a husband and wife after conflict
Don't let the sun go down on your anger — pausing a conversation while still reconciling the relationship
Confess and pray together — praying out loud with each other, as James 5:16 describes
No record of wrongs — letting 1 Corinthians 13 love shape how you move forward
Physical touch — holding hands to reconnect the physical to the spiritual

  • How to Stop Bickering with Your Spouse
We jokingly teach bickering tactics, then open Scripture on why couples bicker and how to stop

    About This Episode

At the start of this episode, Aaron and Jennifer share their favorite tips on how to bicker with your spouse. Of course, they're playing. The real intention is to identify why married couples bicker and to help you learn how to stop in a biblical way. They confess they used to bicker all the time, share the car ride when a friend asked Aaron if he realized how he was talking to his wife, and explain how their kids now act as little alarms around the house. From James 4, Galatians 5, and the words of Jesus in Luke 6, they show that bickering comes from the flesh and from what is stored up in the heart, and that it's really a devouring of one another.

    In This Episode

The 'how to bicker' tactics — slammed doors, a list of wrongs, and never letting your spouse have the last word
Why we bicker — James 4 and the passions at war within us
Bickering is devouring — Galatians 5 and walking in the flesh versus walking in the Spirit
Called out by a friend — the car ride that showed Aaron how he was talking to his wife
Kids as alarms — why repenting to your children matters when they hear you bicker
Quick to hear, slow to speak — James 1:19 and really listening instead of waiting to respond
A soft answer — Proverbs 15:1 and Proverbs 17:14 on stopping strife before it bursts
The heart behind the words — Luke 6:45 and asking God to reveal and change the root

  • 10 Verses You Can Pray Over Your Spouse
Aaron and Jennifer each share five Scriptures they pray over each other, and why praying the Word matters

    About This Episode

Prayer is so important for a thriving Christian marriage, and God desires us to pray to Him for everything. In this episode, Jennifer and Aaron each share five verses they like to pray for each other, hoping to inspire you to pray with and for your spouse every day. They explain that praying Scripture isn't a magic formula, but a way of going to the Word of God and praying what it says over the person you love most. Along the way they talk about reading your own mail in Ephesians 5, praying for your spouse's confidence and freedom from sin, and why prayer helps protect your marriage from the enemy.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith
