In this episode of Married With Horses, we make our initial selections for our ProFantasyRodeo.com 2018 WNFR Teams. I say, “Initial” because this was the first time we sat down and looked at all of the contestants in each event and tried to piece together a team. It was fun and you get a little insight into how we select our teams. SPOILER ALERT: It’s not real scientific, but we both have GREAT teams!! I guess, we’ll know for sure in about a month when the rodeo starts in Vegas! You can enter your own team at ProFantasyRodeo.com. If you have any inside information into any of the contestants that we weren’t aware of, feel free to message us BEFORE the rodeo starts!!

SHOW NOTES:
We’re back in the studio at the house today with just the two of us. We discuss the the jamb packed last weekend that was full of barrel racing across the nation with the AQHA World Show, NBHA World Championships, the Texas Fall Classic Barrel Race in conjunction with BBR Southwestern Regional with the Isabella Futurity and an The American Qualifier (that last one was all one event with a really, really long name... I’m sure I got it wrong... lets just call it the Texas Fall Classic Barrel Race and Futurity), and I’m sure other events as well. Congrats to all the winners. There were a lot and a LOT of $$$ paid out. Also, we discussed the pains of having a sick kid and all that has entailed. We also answer a couple questions from a listener.

- Q&A: Asked by Shelaine Rozenboom in Bussey, Iowa:
My horse is 12 years old and we are starting his 4th season of barrel racing. I had a baby July 24 so 2018 has just started for us. He has the potential to be fast but I can’t seem to get him to run to the first or between the barrels. Question 1: Any pointers on how to get him to run? He knows how, he’ll do it in the open. I think of him as lazy.
Question 2: During slow work I am struggling to get him to pick up the correct lead leaving the second and first barrel. He also won’t drive out of the barrel and takes several strides before attempting to lope. I’ve been trying to teach him to step with a purpose. I mean, even at a walk grab dirt and pull himself forward instead of just throwing his legs out there.
---------------------------------
Thanks for the question, Shelaine! Hope we helped!
Howdy!
This episode was with our good friend, Lacey Harmon. It was our second conversation from the Texas Fall Classic Futurity and Barrel Race. Lacey is a barrel horse breeder and trainer. She’s been in the game a while despite not quite being 30 years old yet. She has had loads of success throughout her career while training futurity horses, but none more than when she won 3, (yes THREE!) $100,000 slot races in the last 2 years. It’s quite an accomplishment that has set her apart as the queen of the slot race. This was a fun conversation that touched on all types of emotion. She has an infectious laugh and and always seems to have a great optimistic attitude. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed talking to her!

Hey there!
This conversation is with our good friends Hallie and Lee Hanssen. Together this barrel racing power couple has a phenomenal program that includes standing multiple stallions, having a deep breeding program, and training and competing on some of the best horses in the barrel racing futurity game. They’re great people with interesting stories who have a genuine knowledge and passion for their sport and profession. We really had a blast talking to them. Hope you enjoy it!

Our 4th and final conversation from last weekends 2018 WPRA Finals in Waco was with our GREAT friends, Carey Benton and Carissa Bryant. We’re just a few months into this and we’ve had some of the biggest names in the sport of rodeo and barrel racing on the show already. While that has been all good and exciting, we’ve had a few folks asking us to have on some “normal” barrel racers or maybe someone that your everyday weekend barrel racer can relate a little more to. Well, we decided to have on some NOT SO “NORMAL” BARREL RACERS. Why are they different? Because they’re part of our tribe. They’re women who keep Jackie focused and level headed when she wins, positive when she loses, and are ALWAYS at the other end of the phone when we need something. These ladies are WAY more than just barrel racers to us. They’re tribe. They’re friends. They’re family. Jackie wouldn’t be able to do what she does or be the woman she is without these (and a few other) women in her life. The conversation was originally meant to be light hearted and fun (which it still was, at times), but morphed into a little more serious and REAL. We think that’s why folks listen to our podcast. It’s REAL. It’s life. We don’t sugar coat a damn thing. We’ve all dealt with garbage times in our life and overcoming those make us who we are. We love these girls and we think you will to!

Our 3rd conversation from the 2018 WPRA Finals was with Angela Ganter. Angela is a barrel racer, mom, and really good friend ours. She recently became the Canadian Grass Roots Champion and will be heading to the Canadian National Finals to compete next week (Oct. 30-Nov. 4, 2018). She’s also the mom and hauling partner to multiple time NFR qualifier, Jackie Ganter. Angela was Jackie Jatzlau’s hauling partner when Jackie qualified for the NFR in 2003 and 2004. They have the better part of 2 decades of history with one another and the stories reflect that long friendship. Angela also beat Breast Cancer in the last decade. She’s a great woman. We’ve always been a fan of hers. We think you will be too.

Our second episode from the WPRA Finals was with roping superstar, Lari Dee Guy. Lari Dee is an 11-time world champ, horse trainer, clinician, and all around bad ass with a rope in her hand. Her list of accomplishments are LONG and can be found on her website HERE! We really enjoyed talking to her and hearing stories about her fellow ropers, cool partnerships, and amazing horses. We are certainly glad to see more breakaway roping being added to more events so these talented ladies can compete at more money and showcase their hard work and talent. Thanks for joining us and listening. This was a cool conversation. I bet you’ll like it. Life’s short. Ride a Unicorn.

This episode of MWH is with “Backflip" Johnny Dudley. Johnny is a professional rodeo clown and great friend of ours. He’s my favorite rodeo act and also a hell of guy. Johnny is also a former US Marine, a dad of 2 little boys, and along with his beautiful wife, Emily, and her family they own a phenomenal tack business, DUECES WILD TACK. He really is all about rodeo and the western way of life. Luckily for us, we get to see him at barrel races every now and again because his wife is a barrel racer and he announces them from time to time. This time, we had some good conversation in the horse trailer/studio after he wrapped up his announcer duties at the 2018 WPRA World Finals in Waco, TX. This is the first of the conversations we’ve released from our time there and we’ll have more coming in the upcoming week! The stories are great! I think you’ll enjoy it! I know we did!

Jonathon Oliver, or “JJ” as we know him, is an author, speaker, and dad. He’s penned a few books including Impersonations and Joy In The Journey: 1st Year Chronicles of a Stay At Home Dad. He’s also traveled the country giving speeches in schools and other places for a couple of organizations including one we discussed on this episode with him, Rachel’s Challenge. We’ve known Jonathon for a long time. We grew up together in the same little Texas town. He now lives outside of Tulsa, OK with his beautiful wife and 2 girls. We have history, so the conversation was comfortable, quick, and easy. We bounced around and hit a myriad of great topics. From fatherhood and raising kids, to living with grace and compassion, to marriage, mental toughness, and the places in between. We really enjoyed talking with JJ and appreciate y’all for hanging out with us for a couple of hours! Be sure to check in the show notes below for links to Jonathon’s website, books (for purchase!), social media links, and other cool media and links pertaining to our friend.
