  • Thor 075: What Grade Did Thor Get in Asgardian Art Class?
Minute Seventy-Five: From Thor’s Motivation to Thor’s ArtJoining us to discuss the handing over of the journal and Thor’s art attempt at drawing Yggdrasil is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast. In the seventy-fifth minute of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor...
    • We really focus on Jane here as she and Thor talk. He’s such a cheerleader for her, and we totally believe it.
    • She’s really at her lowest here, so it’s amazing to see how he turns her around.
    • This is where the whole science/magic conversation happens. It’s interesting because magic still seems to exist on Asgard. Perhaps, they know what Midgardians view as magic is actually science, but on Asgard, there is still something magical, even beyond that?
    • Or perhaps Loki’s magic is some form of hacking he does with their advanced science?
    • Why does Jane have what ends up being Thor’s Yggdrasil in her journal? It doesn’t look like our solar system. What was she working on?
    • And how does Yggdrasil work? Are we meant to believe it’s a metaphor? Or some weird space thing?
    • How do the Nine Realms work? We spend some time going through all nine of the Realms and trying to figure out exactly how it works, as compared to how they work in Norse myth versus the comics.
    • We also discuss a few other areas that are sometimes incorporated into the Realms.
    • Why are the Frost Giants from Jotunheim when it sounds like Niflheim – a planet of primordial ice – would be more natural for them?
    • Again, Andy is really not impressed by Thor’s art efforts here.
How does Thor know about the Hubble Telescope?
    • Bubbawheat brings some great research about Icelandic and Norse accents and how they’d actually be pronounced. They’re very interesting.
    • We go into pronunciation because of how Thor says ‘Hubble Telescope.’ Is it just a fish out of water joke? Or is there some other joke with language? It wasn’t scripted, so perhaps it’s a joke they came up on set.
    • Maybe it’s how Australians say it. (Just kidding.)
    • We dig into the Hubble Telescope a bit as far as it’s history, and point out where you can look online to see images from the Hubble Telescope.
It’s been a week of romance by the fire, and now Thor’s drawing some funky tree. It’s our last chat with Bubbawheat. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • Thor 074: How Many RomCom Tropes Can They Squeeze Into This Minute?
Minute Seventy-Four: From A Fireside Connection to Some SHIELD FrustrationJoining us to discuss the RomCom Tropes-filled relationship between Jane and Thor, Jane’s journal, and her anger at SHIELD is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast. In the seventy-fourth minute of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor...
    • Wow, is this minute overloaded with RomCom tropes! Matthew runs through a list of many of them. They make for great conversation topics for sure.
    • Interesting that Jane says, “I’m really glad that you’re safe,” instead of, “I’m really glad that you’re okay.” There’s an interesting irony there, particularly knowing what Loki’s plotting for Thor.
    • Thor seems to have working on looking internally here.
    • One of the tropes? That special something she’s been looking for that he’s found and gets for her.
    • We all love Jane’s 4-color BIC pen so much.
    • The firelight... so romantic...
    • The only trope we’re missing is the ‘I feel like I’ve known you forever’ trope.
    • Again... Patrick Doyle’s score... so good...
    • We talk about how Thor really has so much empathy now. It’s great to see.
    • Jane’s struggling about something that has nothing to do with him, and he’s interested. Another trope.
Jane’s afraid SHIELD won’t let her research see the light of day.
    • Is it that they’ll hide it? Or use it for their own evil purposes?
    • This does feel like that element of SHIELD that’s run by Hydra agents.
    • We debate any potential storyline with Jane’s father and Erik and connections to SHIELD they may have had in their past.
We’ve got more romance, a special gift, and some anger at the government to talk about with Bubbawheat today. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • Thor 073: Do They Need a Permit to Have a Fire on the Roof of Smith Motors?
Minute Seventy-Three: From Erik’s Drunk Talk to Jane’s Roof TalkJoining us to discuss the move away from Jane’s trailer to let Erik sleep it off up to the roof, where Jane and Thor chat is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast. In the seventy-third minute of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor...
    • Erik doesn’t think Thor is the god of thunder but he ought to be. So clearly, there’s no more animosity here. And he’s a bit of a father figure for Thor now?
    • To that end, it doesn’t matter we never saw what happened in the bar between Thor and Erik but it’s so great how clear the bond between the two men has grown.
    • But the script was more on the nose so we’re again glad that Branagh toned it down a bit.
    • Thor takes Erik to Jane’s trailer. Was Erik too drunk to tell Thor where he’s staying? Or does he bring her to Jane’s trailer because he is still so drawn to her?
    • Or is Thor unsure about their relationship? They do seem very awkward. We talk about that ‘flirted but gone too far’ reaction they both have.
    • Clearly, Thor doesn’t want to leave. This moment again shines as part of the romantic comedy beats in this film.
    • We also love how Thor is framed to be incredibly large in this small space.
    • Jane gets flustered and hides her cereal. This also is complete RomCom.
    • We talk about how much we’re buying into (or not) the growing relationship between Thor and Jane.
    • To that end, is this the first woman Thor has actually fallen for?
Thor and Jane take it to the roof.
    • Fire on the roof? Are there any permits needed for that?
    • Again, Natalie Portman proves her comedy skills with her line delivery here.
    • This location is such a great one. That neon sign behind them stuns.
    • Being outside by the fire certainly has a Norse mythos feel for Thor and his fellow mythological characters.
    • Being on the roof also brings these characters closer to the gods metaphorically.
    • Thor’s himbo elements shine here as he so clearly focuses on, listens to and engages with Jane.
    • To that end, is this part of his journey to rebuild? His draw to someone who can potentially save him?
    • Patrick Doyle’s use of the Thor theme as romance here is perfect.
It’s the start of something romantic in this minute, and Bubbawheat’s here for all of it. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • Thor 072: How Drunk Did Thor & Erik Get?
Minute Seventy-Two: From Loki’s Warning to Thor’s DeliveryJoining us to discuss the working relationship between Loki and Heimdall, as well as the arrival of Thor with a drunk Erik over his shoulder is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast! In the seventy-second minute of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor...
    • Heimdall takes a long time to reply to Loki about his loyalties. And Loki looks unhappy about that.
    • Is Heimdall feeling guilt now that he earlier betrayed Odin to let Thor go down to Jotunheim? Or was that a situation where the ends more justified the means?
    • Is part of the reason Loki asks this now is because he knows Heimdall disobeyed Odin earlier and wants to make sure he knows so Heimdall doesn’t obey now?
    • We debate this point for a bit. Very interesting moment here.
    • Loki walks out with a comment about Thor’s mess. What’s he mean by that?
    • Is he afraid Heimdall will open the Bifrost to Thor? Or is he worried that Heimdall may bring Thor back?
    Meanwhile, back on Midgard...
    • Jane’s now reading Erik’s library book. Kinda distracted, but still reading it.
    • We see she eats GoLean Crunch!
    • Thor shows up with a drunk Erik thrown over his shoulder. How drunk did Erik get? Does it matter that we didn’t get to see the bar fight or Erik passing out in the street?
    • Erik seems to be buddy-buddy with Thor now. So does that mean Thor can stay?
    • Thor’s metabolism is Asgardian but he’s mortal. Why is he handling his liquor so well?
    • When Thor says Erik made his ancestors proud, what would it have been that made them proud?
    • But where did Thor get this plaid coat? It was laying on the bar. Did he steal someone else’s coat?
    • It’s kinda a lumberjack flannel chique... in other words, fairly ugly.
    • We identify Jane’s shirt, thanks to people online. It’s not Miss Minutes though. It’s called Wandering Sun designed by Marc Jacobs.
    • And Bubbawheat points out a few of the movies that Jane has on DVD in her trailer.
It’s a fun minute full of kingly warnings and drunk deliveries with Bubbawheat. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • Thor 071: Is Loki Looking for a New Gatekeeper Yet?
Minute Seventy-One: From Loki’s Icy Dealings to Heimdall’s Suspicious LeaningsJoining us to discuss Loki’s plotting and planning, and how he treats Heimdall, is Bubbawheat from the Flights, Tights and Movie Nights podcast. In the seventy-first minute of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor...
    • Loki and Laufey continue their conversation about Loki’s involvement in the raid on Odin’s Vault, and Loki’s plan to get Laufey into Asgard to kill Odin.
    • He says they’d look down on him if he were the one to kill him father, but wouldn’t that fit perfectly with this Shakespearean story?
    • Loki also says he’ll return the Casket of Eternal Winters to Laufey. Does he mean it?
    • Why does Loki not reveal to Laufey that he’s his son? We stew on that some more.
    • Bubbawheat theorizes about the three frost giants and how Loki may have mind controlled one to tell two others he knows of a secret passage to Asgard.
    • Laufey stands up when Loki presents his offer. Is he playing his cards a bit too quickly?
    • We theorize some more about the possibility that this planet is falling apart and the Jotuns are actually weakened as a species right now.
    • It does seems Laufey knows his power is fading.
    • Loki digs on the way Jotunheim looks. Is that part of his plan, or could he just not help throwing in another dig at this place?
    • After all, Loki is in a power position to piss Laufey off with the idea to get him to agree to this plan.
    • Laufey’s “I accept” is so slow and drawn out. It’s interesting how his pattern works.
    • So is Laufey then trying to downplay his “I accept” after he showed his hand too quickly when he stood up.
    • It does read as very deliberate.
Loki returns through the Bifrost to Heimdall’s Observatory
    • Loki stepping off the Bifrost weirdly looks like he’s getting off the subway. Very strange.
    • Loki and Heimdall have such a a battle here. A battle with words.
    • That being said, Idris Elba still barely gets to move in this scene.
    • Would Loki be able to put a new gatekeeper in this role now that he’s king? Or is this a perma-role for Heimdall because of his vision?
    • There’s a bit of a sense that Heimdall is observing more with his super-eyes. Was he watching Loki with Thor?
    • To that end, did Loki change clothes so Heimdall wouldn’t recognize him?
    • If only there were a way to see when Loki is shrouding things.
    • Loki plays a bit of three-dimensional chess with how he sets up Heimdall to admit he’s king and has to do what he says.
    • To that end, is Heimdall even playing the same game that Loki is?
It’s a minute full of cold plotting and suspicious gatekeepers with Bubbawheat. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • Thor 070: Why Doesn’t Loki Tell Laufey He’s His Son?
Minute Seventy: From A Cold Stroll to An Icy ReceptionJoining us to discuss Loki’s solo visit to King Laufey is Bryon Lockhart, host of the Marine Corps Movie Minute and Co-Host of the Marvel Events Timeline Podcasts. In the seventieth minute of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor...
    • It’s very difficult to figure out where we are here in Utgardhall. Has Jotunheim just continued crumbling to pieces? Because other than the tower, none of this really looks like something we’ve seen before.
    • For instance, where’s the crevasse caused by Thor’s lightning?
    • It’s possible the vast quantities of snow covering everything just make the landscape look different.
Loki is brought forward to speak with Laufey. Loki and Laufey talk.
    • What did Loki say to get this audience in the throne room? Earlier, Laufey seemed fine addressing them from above with them below in the plaza.
    • Laufey’s first words are “Kill him,” but no one moves. Is that a sign of Laufey losing control over his Jotuns?
    • Why doesn’t Loki reveal his nature as a Jotun right away? As Laufey’s son?
    • Is Laufey ineffective or is it that the Jotuns are so weak with the loss of the Casket?
    • Do we get any sense from this conversation that Laufey was in on the Jotun invasion in Odin’s Vault?
    • With the line “There are traitors in the house of Odin,” does that mean Laufey assumed it was Loki? Does he now Loki is the trickster god? Does he know other Asgardians are witches and can cast magic?
    • We finally hear that the Jotuns in the Vault was all something Loki put together just for fun, “to ruin his brother’s big day.” Does that change any thoughts on what’s happened since?
    • Loki plans to have Odin killed. Should Laufey be more wary of Loki’s plan, knowing he’s the trickster god?
    • To that end, is there any surprise that essentially Loki is plotting killing both his real father, not Odin?
    • Laufey did leave Loki to die as a child. Perhaps this is why Loki wants to kill him.
    • But was Loki abandoned? Was he left somewhere during the war and Odin assumed he’d been abandoned?
    • We feel it’s intentional that there’s not a clear emotional throughline for Loki in the film.
    • Laufey may feel this is a trap, but he may recognize that this is his last chance, right?
We compare the script of this scene between Loki and Laufey.
    • Wow, much more interesting. Loki reveals his origins to Laufey.
    • Laufey also reveals that Loki was abandoned.
    • It’s interesting hearing the plan put in place between Loki and Laufey, that it seems like they put a plot in place to get the Jotuns ruling the nine realms. This plays so much better and gives reason for Laufey to trust Loki! Why did they cut this back?
    • Matthew prefers Loki remaining more obfuscated with his motivations, but Andy and Bryon really like this scripted bit.
    • But is there something to Matthew’s point that it works better not having Loki ever acknowledge Laufey as his father?
    • Or is it even more Shakespearean if Loki reveals his heritage then kills his father? That could’ve been quite powerful.
Why is Loki here? Will he reveal his heritage? And what have the frost giants been doing since we last saw them? We dig in with Bryon Lockheart today. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • Thor 069: Why Boilermakers, Erik?
Minute Sixty-Nine: From Protective in the Pub to Lonely on JotunheimJoining us to discuss the wrap-up (and boilermakers) between Thor and Erik in the bar as well as the figure arriving on Jotunheim is Bryon Lockhart, host of the Marine Corps Movie Minute and Co-Host of the Marvel Events Timeline Podcasts. In the sixty-ninth minute of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor...
    • Erik’s protective feelings for Jane really kick in here as he tells Thor he needs to leave town tonight.
    • Does that make sense? Is he overstepping his bounds as far as Jane and any possible relationship with Thor?
    • Is Erik a bit of the Culver University Godfather?
    • Should Erik be meddling in Jane’s romantic interests? Does that diminish Jane as a character that she needs someone to control her love life?
    • Or is there something more in relation to how Jane’s father lived and/or died?
    • And is it a problem that this story point never comes back?
    • We sure hope that Erik shows up in Thor: Love & Thunder. As it looks now, neither he nor Darcy are in the credits, which hurts our hearts.
    • Again, Thor very much takes in what Erik says about leaving town and speaks in a 100% honest way as he agrees to the deal. This is a side of Thor we just love.
    • Chris Hemsworth plays Thor with such authentic honesty. It’s an important element in his character.
    • Perhaps it’s that Thor very much believes in honoring a debt. Erik did help him get free, after all.
Is it odd that Erik orders them boilermakers to seal the deal?
    • Perhaps it’s just because of how Stellan Skarsgård says the word ‘boilermaker.’
    • We go through the history of boilermakers a bit. Did you know they’re from Montana?
    • These glasses seem ridiculously large. Like these characters are hobbits marveling at how ‘they come in pints!’
    • The unspoken drinking contest is very funny.
    • The deleted scene of Erik smashing the glass and screaming for “Another!” works well. It’s a shame we didn’t get it.
    • Erik also gets rip-roaring drunk. We see him and Thor singing outside on the streets. Erik passes out. Thor carries him back to Jane’s trailer. It’s a fun scene and in a way, helps us buy that Erik’s more comfortable with Thor sticking around.
    • The scene with Erik really reminds us that not only is Thor handsome, but he’s incredibly charismatic and everyone wants to be in his presence. Erik’s clearly having a good time with him. Great bonding.
Who is the mysterious figure arriving on Jotunheim?
    • We see the bifrost drop off a single figure at the Bifrost junction on Jotunheim and they start walking toward Utgardhall. Who could this be?
    • And why does the landscape look so different again?
    • It’s important to know someone is arriving through the Bifrost. It’s not some magical other arrival through a back door. Interesting...

  • Thor 068: Why Is Erik So Protective of Jane?
Minute Sixty-Eight: From Not Having All the Answers to Only Caring About HerJoining us to take a stop in the local bar with Erik and Thor as Thor introspects and Erik acts protective of Jane is Bryon Lockhart, host of the Marine Corps Movie Minute and Co-Host of the Marvel Events Timeline Podcasts. In the sixty-eighth minute of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor...
    • This is yet another long talky scene in the film, which hasn’t had many of these. Erik and Thor converse in the bar, and we really like it. But why is Erik so protective of Jane?
    • Thor learns to embrace his own humility here. It’s great seeing him finally look within.
    • Is his looking within still too self-focused to make him worthy? Would it have been more valuable to focus on the loss of his father?
    • Or is it that the self-reflection really comes from from the loss of his father?
    • Should an Asgardian more than 1000 years old be wiser than Thor is? Does it make sense that he’s only as wise as a twenty-something?
    • Do Erik’s lines sound like wisdom or drunk wisdom?
    • Erik and Thor seem to each be having their own conversations, but they tie together well.
    • Erik getting serious and focusing on Thor possibly being delusional, it’s clear he cares about Jane.
    • The scripted bar scene has a lot more meat to it. We find that the extended conversation in the bar has a more logical flow and we think it would’ve worked better to develop the emotions between these two characters.
    • But did we need the drunk townies Pete and Jake starting a fight with Erik?
    • That being said, it’s important that Thor isn’t one who gets involved in the fight. That’s another moment showing his growth.
    • Does Erik’s nature to be so protective of Jane make sense? He’s just her mentor from school. Sure, he knew Jane’s father, but is that enough?
Thor tries to look inward, possibly for the first time in his life, and Erik’s here to help... as long as it doesn’t hurt Jane. So much to discuss with Bryon Lockheart. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

    • Erik pivots and pivots again with his lies. Stellan Skarsgård carries the humor here and delivers.
    • It’s clear to us that Agent Coulson doesn’t buy into Erik’s lies at all. Does Erik believe it works? Or does he know Coulson’s playing him?
    • We find it so interesting that Coulson’s role was written to be Nick Fury in the film. This makes so much more sense to us to have Coulson here.
    • But should Coulson have let Erik walk through their command center to the holding cell? What about all the sensitive information everywhere?
    • Erik’s lines to Thor are hilarious. “Donnie, Donnie, Donnie...”
    • Does Coulson see Thor take Jane’s journal? What about the Agent literally standing right in front of Thor facing him? They have to have intended for Thor to take it to Jane so they can let her continue her work while now watching her.
    • The bar joke makes us laugh. Did you know they filmed this in a strip club? Does that matter?
Erik takes Thor to the bar for a drink... and a talk.
    • Foo Fighters “Walking” plays as Erik and Thor drink and talk. The music video is a spin on Joel Schumaker’s Michael Douglas movie Falling Down. The only connection we can find is they sing “Learning to walk again” which seems to fit with Thor’s place in the world now.
    • Thor’s hair looks terrible here in the bar. But we like Thor’s introspective moment.
    • It’s impossible to identify any of the background actors here unfortunately.
    • And we talk about product placement versus just getting a release. Film talk!

    • Loki looks up at the sky. Is he imagining he’s looking at Odin or Heimdall? And how interesting that this is a moment Branagh doesn’t cut to a god’s eye view shot for this moment.
    • It’s interesting that they opt to just have Loki walk out of the shot instead of showing him depart in some magical way. We debate if it works or if we’d rather see him using one of his back doors.
    • Did Loki really hope he could pick up the hammer? Or was it just for fun on the off chance he could have lifted it?
Agent Coulson watches Erik lying through his teeth to free Thor, but does he believe it?
    • Before that, Agent Sitwell moves into the room to talk to Coulson, and he goes from dark to light. Is there a chance they were already thinking about him being a HYDRA agent at this point? It sure feels that way.
    • The SHIELD Crater Base is currently under repair, and was that the 1st Assistant Director we hear call “Set”?
    • Sitwell lets Coulson know he has a visitor, and it’s Erik. Why is it Erik who comes? Why not Jane? Or both of them?
    • Perhaps Erik worries that Jane is too hot-headed.
    • Did Jane have Donald Blake’s driver’s license lying around with his clothes when they broke up? Or did Darcy whip up this whole license?
    • How funny that the New York driver’s license actually has Excelsior on it. Is that why they went with it?
    • Coulson clearly doesn’t actually believe Erik lying, but seems to know he can use the situation to get more information out by following them.
    • Erik lying about steroids is hilarious, but his comedic bit about ‘Donald’ being upset about SHIELD’s jackbooted thugs is great and really shows his feelings about SHIELD.
    • Matthew takes a deep dive on the address on Donald’s address. It’s a kooky rabbit hole he went down.
    • The photo of Thor on the driver’s license? It’s the photo Darcy took of him in Isabela’s Diner.
It’s a comedic minute watching Erik try to spin lies to Agent Coulson so that they’ll release Thor, and Bryon Lockheart’s here for it all. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries
