  • The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part fourteen
In our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism.
In this episode, Alan's discusses how, with the victory of Cromwell's army at the Battle of Naseby, the first English Civil War came to an end. The defeated King handed himself over to the Scots, hoping to play the New Model Army (likened to a combination of the Soviets, the Red Army and the Bolshevik Party) off against the propertied classes in parliament, who were increasingly worried about this armed, disciplined body of lower-class radicals. Just like after the Russian February Revolution and the fall of the Tsar, England entered into a state of dual power.
A careful study of the English Revolution is obligatory for every class-conscious worker, Leon Trotsky noted. So tune in every week and listen to Alan explain this important chapter in British history from a Marxist perspective.

  • 2020: A World On Fire
In this talk from the recent International Marxist University, Alan Woods - editor of the In Defence of Marxism website and author of a long list of books on Marxist theory - discusses perspectives for the world revolution. Visit podcast.marxist.com for the full recordings.
The year 2020 will enter the annals of history as a decisive turning point. The coronavirus pandemic, the economic collapse and the corresponding wave of popular anger and revolts have brought all the contradictions in capitalist society to the surface. Millions of people are questioning the status quo as never before, and the inspiring popular uprising in the USA is the harbinger of battles to come.

The system has revealed its total bankruptcy, and despite the fervent desire of the ruling class for a return to normality, nothing will ever be the same again. We are witnessing the first stages of world revolution. Only the ideas of Marxism can offer a way out for humanity and prepare the way for the final victory of socialist revolution.

  • What next for the Lebanese Revolution?
The Lebanese masses are moving once again. In the wake of the August 4th Beirut blast which devastated much of the city, the masses have taken to the streets to hold those responsible to account. Rightfully, they have aimed their anger at the corrupt government of Lebanon which caused the blast through their neglect and corruption. In the wake of this powerful movement, the government has resigned for the second time in less than a year.
This is a great achievement, but the revolution must go further and take power into its own hands. What next for the Lebanese masses? How can the workers of Lebanon take power, and spread the revolution across the middle east?
Adam Zeineddine from Fightback, the Canadian section of the IMT, explores these questions.

In this episode, Alan discusses how, after some losses at the hands of the Royalists, Oliver Cromwell and his new army scored a decisive turning point with a crushing victory at the battle of Marston Moor. In our latest episode, Alan discusses how, with the Parliamentarians in a favourable position at the outbreak of the Civil War, thousands of men enlisted to fight on their side. The Royalists, relying on the less economically developed regions, were dependent on superior cavalry and a stubborn unwillingness to surrender. The stage was set for a colossal engagement between the two sides, which put a stop to any hope of compromise.

  • The early years of the Communist Party
In this talk from Revolution Festival 2019, Ben Gliniecki - writer for Socialist Appeal - discusses the beginnings of the Communist Party of Great Britain, which was founded 100 years ago on 31 July 1920.
The founding of the British Communist Party in 1920 took place during a period of heightened class struggle, marking an important milestone in the development of Marxism. Although only a few thousands strong, it attracted the most militant sections of the working class and led key struggles, such as those of the National Minority Movement.
In its early days, the young party was affected by sectarianism, but this was later corrected with the intervention of the Communist International, led by Lenin and Trotsky. Unfortunately however, after Lenin’s death and the rise of Stalinism, the party was thrown off course, zig-zagging wildly between opportunism and ultra-left sectarianism. This doomed the party to forever remain as a fringe organisation.
Ben Gliniecki discusses how, despite these mistakes, the successes from the early years of the Communist Party provide many excellent examples for Marxists today of how a revolutionary party can be built and gain the support of the working class.

  • The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part ten
In our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism.
In our latest episode, Alan discusses how, after King Charles' patience with his rebellious parliament ran out, he launched an attempted coup d'état, leading to one of the most famous scenes in English history, with Charles arriving at parliament with a list of names for arrest, only to find "the birds [had] flown" – and leaving empty handed to defiant calls of "privilege!"
The city of London was soon in a state of revolutionary insurrection. A fight within the privileged classes had spilled out onto the streets. The masses were in control of the capital. The Civil War had begun.
A careful study of the English Revolution is obligatory for every class-conscious worker, Leon Trotsky noted. So tune in every week and listen to Alan explain this important chapter in British history from a Marxist perspective.

  • The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part nine
In our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism.
In our latest episode, Alan looks at the developments following the execution of Strafford. If King Charles thought Strafford's execution would calm the situation in England, he was dead wrong. Aside from continued opposition from Pym and parliament, the masses were becoming bolder, arming themselves, acquiring revolutionary force, and even starting to worry the more-moderate parliamentarians.

  • The English Revolution: the world turned upside down - part eight
In our podcast series 'The World Turned Upside Down', Alan Woods (editor of In Defence of Marxism) discusses the English Revolution: a colossal event in world history that dealt an irreparable blow to feudal absolutism.
In the latest episode, Alan outlines how King Charles's maneuvers forced him to recall parliament yet again. This however, gave an outlet for the pent up anger of the masses. A new period of turmoil opens up as the conflict pours out onto the streets. Petitions and political agitation spread amongst the masses throughout the country, along with unprecedented mobilisations, in particular in London.
The intervention of the masses completely disrupted the comfortable relations built up between parliament and the King. An amicable deal was ruled out. Charles was pushed into a corner and forced to give up one of his key allies.
A careful study of the English Revolution is obligatory for every class-conscious worker, Leon Trotsky noted. So tune in every week and listen to Alan explain this important chapter in British history from a Marxist perspective.
