        • Stop the Cycle of Self-abandonment

In this episode, Kim engages in a profound discussion with her guest, Shalini Josen, delving into the topic of overcoming self-abandonment and embracing self-compassion. Shalini draws from her training with renowned expert Gabor Mate to shed light on the concept of choosing attachment over authenticity, a phenomenon at the core of our tendency to favor self-abandonment and neglect self-compassion and self-care. Throughout the conversation, they explore the rapid inclination toward self-judgment and judgment of others as opposed to choosing the path of compassion. Ultimately, the fear of rejection or abandonment by others emerges as a pivotal factor driving self-abandonment.

          Takeaways:

          • 1.Attachment vs. Authenticity: Shalini introduces the idea of choosing attachment over authenticity, a concept that serves as the foundation for many instances of self-abandonment. This suggests that in our pursuit of belonging and connection, we often compromise our true selves, leading to a disconnect between who we are and who we project to be.

          • 2.Self-Judgment and Lack of Compassion: The conversation highlights the tendency for individuals to quickly engage in self-criticism and judgment of others, rather than extending compassion and understanding. This pattern of behavior can perpetuate self-abandonment and hinder the development of self-compassion.

          • 3.Fear of Rejection and Abandonment: Shalini underscores the fear of rejection or abandonment by others as a significant driving force behind self-abandonment. Many people may prioritize conforming to expectations or norms to avoid the perceived risk of isolation, even if it means neglecting their own well-being.

          • Overall, this episode explores the complex dynamics of self-compassion and self-abandonment, offering valuable insights into the underlying motivations and behaviors that shape our choices in relationships and self-care.

            About Shalini:

The revelation on her personal journey is profound—she firmly believes that the path to achieving mother-child harmony lies in resolving internal conflicts within the mother herself.

Meet Shalini Josen, founder of Shifting with Shalini, a coaching practice merging western psychology with eastern mindfulness. Shalini’s focus is supporting parents towards fostering close, fulfilling relationships with their children by overcoming the hurdles of anxiety, conflict, and stress.

With a B.A. and M.B.A. in business, Shalini initially delved into her family business. However, the role of motherhood shifted her trajectory, prompting her to adopt conscious parenting. Today, she navigates parenthood with mindfulness as the proud mom of two teenage boys.

Shalini holds a Conscious Parenting Certification from Dr. Shefali, and in 2022, completed a short-study trauma-informed course by Dr. Gabor Mate. She also earned a Soul Care and Spiritual Psychology certification with Suzi Lula.

As a compassionate guide, Shalini empowers her clients to undergo a transformative journey—shifting their relationship with both themselves and their children from disconnection to profound connection. • Understanding the Whole Child

In this episode, Harvey Hazen and I discuss the idea of looking beneath the surface of students' behaviors to see the whole child. Our discussion emphasizes the importance of teaching the child rather than the curriculum, and the vital role teachers and parents play in creating an environment where teens and young adults can be their authentic selves. Join us as we uncover the following key takeaways:

1: Empathetic Teaching explores the power of empathy in education. Learn how understanding the unique needs, experiences, and challenges of each student can transform teaching from a one-size-fits-all approach to a personalized, holistic journey.

2: Nurturing Authenticity: Discover strategies for fostering an environment where teens and young adults feel safe and encouraged to express their true selves. We discuss the long-term benefits of promoting self-discovery, individuality, and self-confidence.

3: Beyond the Curriculum: Shift your perspective from focusing solely on academic achievements to nurturing well-rounded, emotionally intelligent individuals. Uncover the ways in which this approach not only enhances students' academic success but also equips them for a fulfilling life beyond the classroom.

                    About Harvey:

I retired several years ago after 37 years in public education. During that time I taught history, was a Counselor, a High School and Middle School Principal and a Superintendent. At the same time my Wife was a Special Education Teacher. On the home front we raised two sons who were 8 years apart. One had diabetes from age 3 and the other was ADD. Both presented unique challenges. My degrees are BS in History/Education and MS in Educational Counseling. I also completed certification programs in Educational Administration.
