New techniques (flash in outdoor landscapes)
    Go to an “undiscovered” area

    Look for film locations http://www.movie-locations.com/

Don’t look at other people’s work before you shoot
Apply recipes from other successful photos to different situations
Try new perspective on an “old” location
Don’t stop shooting after the sun goes down. Try night photography (if allowed); maybe some light painting.

    Topic 1: BRENT: Company Announcement

I’ve been doing “free Saturday’s” for a while now but have never really advertised it. I want to go ahead and extend that through December. Place any order for whenever by December 31 and Saturday’s will be automatically counted free. No code, it’s just automatic.

Topic 2: BRENT: Croatia Highlights, lessons and inspirations
Topic information: Started in Zadar. Haven’t been there before and my initial thoughts are that, it’s nice, but not the pristine old town that I’d hoped for. Still lots of great subjects to photograph, and the weather certainly was varied.
On monday, it rained hard. Story about shooting in the rain and having to change my plans

What it is and technical info:

Tried to import iPhone to Lightroom.  Only brought half my photos.
Tried Airdropping and it said “Converting” for ages and timed out.
HEIC is pronounced “HEEK”, HEIF is “HEEF”
HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image Format.  HEVC stands for High Efficiency Video Coding but is also known as h.265 or MPEG-H.
16 bit color (jpg is only 8), supports transparency, can have multiple shots (animated gifs, anyone?), depth data
Neither formats were developed by Apple.  In fact, it looks like Microsoft has had quite a bit of involvement with these.
They were developed by the “Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding” or JCT-VC.
Video format used to be h.264.  Now it’s HEVC codec (also called h.265).
These are not really very new standards as the first version of the HEVC was published in 2013.
Both formats offer better compression algorithms that produce smaller file sizes to take up precious space on your phone or tablet, yet maintain if not improve the image quality
Both formats are encumbered by patents.  Licensing of HEVC is currently more expensive than the format than the AVC (h.264) format that it is attempting to replace.  This is why many large tech companies have joined and are backing the Alliance for Open Media working on a competing format called AV1 slated for release by the end of 2017 that will be royalty free.
You also have a lossy image format called “Pik” that Google has been working on aiming to replace JPEG with smaller file sizes.

Dealing with HEIF and the future:

    https://www.imore.com/how-take-jpeg-pictures-ios-11-instead-heif
    Lightroom does not support HEIF
Settings > Camera > Format > Most compatible. Changes back to JPG
Quality vs JPG is much better.  JPG has always had banding issues.
Web browsers support it?  Not yet.
    JPEG was launched in 1992.
Incredible potential for the web. What if it took half the time to access a web page?

  • Flash For Hobbyists (Photo Taco)
Jeff Harmon answers listener a question about hobbyist photographers getting into flash photography from listener Jose Lopez:

"I've primarily been taking photos of landscapes, events, and other natural light subjects, but recently wanted to do more photography where a flash would be beneficial. I've watched the Improve Photography tutorials and spent hours looking online at YouTube and I find that it's a bit overwhelming. I've purchased a two YN560 flashes (after reviewing the Recommended Gear page on ImprovePhotography.com), and started to look into light modifiers. That's where I'm starting to get a bit overwhelmed. I got a small softbox, a 5 in 1 reflector, a shoot-through umbrella, and an inexpensive lightsphere clone. I'm not sure what the best settings to use for aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Since the YN560s are manual flashes it's a lot of chimping to see if I got it even close. I was hoping that you might be able to dive into the topic from a hobbyist standpoint and point me in the right direction. I'm sure I'm not the first person to be a bit intimidated by flashes."

Jeff goes over some hobbyist budget friendly options for getting the equipment needed to get started:

    1) 2x Yongnuo YN560-IV flashes: https://yongnuousa.net/products/yn-560iv
    2)Yongnuo 560-TX controller: https://www.amazon.com/YONGNUO-YN560-TX-Controller-YN560-III-function/dp/B00NIJ0UY6/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1507584128&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=yn560-tx&psc=1
    3) Neewer 60" white diffuser umbrella: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KL57D68/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    4)Neewer 7' Light Stand: https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Photography-Studio-Portrait-Lighting/dp/B00UWDD2D2/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1507576190&sr=8-7&keywords=neewer+light+stand
5)Fotodiox Elite Flash Umbrella Bracket: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005ODKX4Q/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    6)Fotodiox F60 Quick-Collapse Flash Softbox: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TBUD4IK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Jeff also goes through how it is he approaches settings when using flash. Generally starts out at his flash sync speed which is 1/250 on his Canon 7DM2, as low an aperture as he can (mostly f/2.8) and still have everyone in the photo in focus, and ISO at 100. If the portrait needs to include the natural surroundings outdoors the he uses in-camera metering to get the background properly exposed and add just a little more light to the models.
