    Topic 1:  Canon 77D Announcement

    Digic 7 processor
    25,6k ISO
    “Fastest Live View Autofocus”

    45 Point AF
Much better at low-light focusing (-3EV)

Jeff: I understand T7i, fine camera for someone starting out. Not enough to upgrade from T6i. Don't understand 77D at all???
    Difference between 77D and T7i

    interval timer
    bulb timer
    AF-On button
    a top LCD panel
eye sensor to shut off the rear LCD when the camera is raised for shooting
    77d costs $110 more than the T7i

Canon announced 3 cameras on the same day, none shoot 4k video

    77D, T7i, M6

    April 2017 for $900

Topic 2: Jeff – Wacom vs Huion Digital Tablet

Not completed review, have to spend a lot more time with Wacom
Initial reaction is not a lot of difference
Wacom has a little smoother feel
Wacom setup by default like I came to discover on my own with Huion
    Wacom pen needs no battery
Suspect Wacom pen I am using is worn out – Connor

Midroll: Casper Mattress.  Go to Casper.com and use offer code IMPROVE
    Zenfolio
Topic 3: Jeff – Shooting basketball

Been doing a ton of high school basketball shooting
Quick tips on basketball in particular

    Shutter Speed at least 1/400
    Aperture 2.8 minimum
ISO to compensate, crank it up! I have shot 6,400 and 8,000 on Canon crop. Only photographers see noise
Shoot close to but not on the baseline with the team you want to shoot coming toward you on offense
Be on the side of the basket so that you can see faces of right handed players
24mm on Canon crop (about 40mm FF) enough room for team coming towards you
70mm on Canon crop (about 112mm FF) not quite enough reach for other side of the floor
Basketball is a vertical game, shoot portrait orientation
Don't forget to get shots of student section, national anthem, cheerleaders, parents, huddle (Moses parting student section)

    Question of the Week:

Jen Mangenello – I’m wondering how people are using the color labels in lightroom? Could some of you that find them useful share examples of how you’re using them?

Update: Mike Thompson on Facebook told me about the Midi2LR conroller.  It’s open source and you can pick up a $60 midi controller that looks quite nice for using Lightroom.
    Update: New Tamron 70-200.
    Topic 1:  WPPI Report

    Who had the coolest session?
What companies at the expo were most interesting?

Topic 2: Improve Photography Plus.  Where we’ve been, where we’re headed.

Sandy is now working on IP+
One class a month added, extra when we can
    More meetups coming soon

    Midroll: Squarespace
    Zenfolio
    Topic 3: Photo Buds

Rusty Parkhurst: This was really a turning point in my photography journey.  Not only does it challenge us to get out shooting more, but it is also good to have someone along for safety reasons.  Especially when venturing out into the wilds for landscape photography.
Photography workshops are a great way to meet new people and make friends that could become life-long friends.  It’s great to have someone to bounce ideas off of and to get advice from as well as gear recommendations.

    Question of the Week:

Traci Agnew: Since my iPad is dying, I want to replace it with something that I can also edit photos on. (I primarily use Lightroom) Someone recently told me that the new iPad pro is good for editing. Anyone have any experience with that or should I look at a macbook? I use an iMac at home and want something that is convenient to take on vacation with me.
How to decide what gels to use (½ CTO vs Full CTO) -Sandy

I shoot a lot of events, and need to use gels often. If I’m in a new place, and don’t know how yellow the lights are, I personally will just set my kelvin to 5500 (no flash), and see how awful it looks. If it’s SUPER yellow, I use a full CT.
Is there a better way to do it? No one taught me how to do it that way, so I’m not sure where I came up with it to tell you the truth.

    Topic 1:  Tilt Shift

    What is a tilt shift
    Panoramas
    Plane of focus
    Benefits for landscape

    Topic 2: Lumenzia Update
Topic 3: Jim – Why not just use ShotHotSpot instead of creating a new photo location app?

It’s a great site (don’t disparage).  Best that’s out there so far.  Has the advantage over my app in terms of quantity.
This site works by trolling flickr and seeing where lots of people upload photos from, and how many likes/comments the photos get.  Then, it puts them on the site.  It’s almost entirely automated, which is the problem.
    Problems

Little girl’s backyard party gets marked as a photo location.
Only sends you to the most popular spots.  That’s the opposite of what I’m trying to do.  I want people to find NEW locations–not the same thing that everyone else is shooting.
No descriptions or info on locations.  Just grabs tags from the photos.  You may need to hike 20 miles to get there and you’d never know (Death Valley problem from this week).  Doesn’t tell you if it’s a sunrise or sunset location, and TPE doesn’t know where you’ll face for the best comps.  You just need someone to research it.
GPS coordinates frequently off. (The Vestrahorn problem)

General area instead of a very specific spot–not helpful for night photography or arriving early way before sunrise.
Flickr is an OLD site.  Still a good resource but not nearly as popular as 10 years ago.  Consequently, it leads you to old places–much of which are now non-existent like the Chatillon Car Graveyard in Belgium.

    No app.

Topic 1:  Out with old, in with the new.  What gear have we gotten rid of, and added for 2017

Nick has sold his phantom 4 drone, and replaced it with….
Selling off old gear is a great way to fund new gear, its amazing what you have laying around sometimes

Topic 2: Nikon coming to BrentRentsLenses.com
Brent has sold a few pieces of Canon gear to make room for some Nikon gear
Special pre-purchase offer: buy a gift card at a discount for future use. Discount code: gcpromo good through Feb 15.
At least two pieces of Nikon gear to be added to the inventory on Feb 16, ready to reserve. Shipments/deliveries by Feb 28. All depending on gear availability and shipping status.
If gift cards sell well, more Nikon gear will be added, kind of like a mini-crowd funded campaign. See blogpost for details: https://brentrentslenses.com/2017/01/19/adding-nikon/
Topic 3: New podcast coming by Brent Bergherm and Brian McGuckin
Brent and Brian are joining forces to create a new IP podcast dedicated to travel, photography and the joy of the journey.
Hoping to record our first show live in Pheonix.
Side note: Brent’s workshop in Phoenix has openings still. Log on and register. Planning to do environmental portraits with a glass blower and sunset at desert botanical gardens. Things still being planned.

Topic 4: The importance of drawing the eye, and how to do it
People often talk about “leading the eye through a photograph”  Often it can make or break a photo.  Here are some ways to help draw the eye through the photo.

Brightness and highlights grab the eye.   If you can manage to make a photo where the subject is the brightest part of the image, you win.
Sharpness.  Sharpness and detail also draw the eye.  This is why shallow depth of field portraits are so successful and popular.. The eye goes straight to the subject.
Simplicity.  The more complex and crazy a photo is, the more the eye is going to tend to wander.  If you’re able to eliminate all the distractions and leave behind only enough to tell the story,… you win again.
Lines and shapes.   Lines that arrows that point out the subject… win again.

Topic 5: Getting “Film Emulations” in Sony Cameras.
    Some custom settings
Basically a way to set custom curves and Color levels

    Listener Questions

    * BJ Stockton      Do you have any good tips for post processing snow so that it doesn't look blue or gray?

Sarah Scully    I had a question yesterday about the best sites for uploading lots of images for sale. I am shooting for our swim team and end up with 300+ images after a meet. We are going to sell the downloads as part payment for me and part fundraiser for the team. Any input? I don't want to charge a ton because I would rather them but many photos:) Also, this is partially my volunteer job for the team. My kids are on the team.
Tim Gleason   Why does HDR processing often make images look like cartoons? How can I best prevent that?
