James Sommers – Looking for a little kit guidance for a trip to Iceland I am planning next April. For those of you that went my question would be what ND filters did you take and which ND filters did use the most? Also, as far as photography equipment is related what item did you take you wished you would have left at home and what didn’t you bring that you wished you did. Thanks in advance for any insight you can give.

    Questions:

Stanley Harper : Question is for Nick Page as I don’t think I have seen the answer. For your off camera flash work, what are you using for light? One powerful strobe, or several speedlights together through that totally awesome softbox?
second, I have been using one speedlight for my OCF work and sometimes, it’s just not enough. Would I be heading down the right path if I put together 3 or four speedlights together to act as one light source?

Sergio Fernandez I love the way off camera flash looks with a modifier. I can’t lug that setup everywhere with me (family event snaps for personal use). I end up not liking my photos with the mixed lighting, Does this happen to you guys and what can you do to combat it?
Paul Coleman With the expense of glass,  legacy glass is becoming more attractive.  What guidelines or suggestions do you have?
Mark Morris For Nick: how are you recording right now, instead of shooting the new Mark IV???????

Nick – First thoughts of the 5d mark iv
    Very similar yet improved build
Love the new button on the back.. I like to program it to change ISO
ISO performance seems to be significantly improved
    The buffer fills too fast
The focus system is greatly improved
The Canon battery grip is worth it.
    Laryssa – Working for Charities
One of the things I like to do is work for charity.
I will be doing a shoot for a friend of mine that is with “Big Brother, Big Sister”
Her “little sister” needs a Senior Shoot.  I volunteer and plan to give her a print.
What are the various charities you can work for and what can you give them.
Jeff – Photoshop Select and Mask

Seriously challenged it this week.  Did a photoshoot for a homecoming group.  I did one last year for the older siblings of the group and so I thought I was really ready for it.
Had a stand with a white backdrop, 3 flashes, and then a girl came with a completely white dress!
Made what has turned out to be a terrible mistake for extracting people from the background, thought if I put up a darker background to help with the contrast would make it easier – nope.  Doesn’t work well when you are going to do an all-white background to have dark tones showing through the hair.  So stick with a light background if extracting, even if you put it on a dark background

    Questions:

le now pretty much since I started (ok ok, I really started with a Nikon d3200 but quickly outgrew it and moved into the world of mirrorless and I don’t see myself jumping ship for a long time.) Does anyone have any advice as to how I can achieve this vision of mine? Im aware that they don’t receive free gear and in most cases they aren’t really paid per se. I simply just want to be “on the team” and receive gear from time to time to test out and review.
Jeremiah Johnston – If I give a real estate agent a free session as a promotion to gain their future business, can the revenue I would have normally charged be written off for tax purposes?
Wanted some feedback: I am looking to buy a f 2.8 70-200mm for my Nikon d810 but they are pricey, if you go the Nikon route. Anyone use the tamron or the sigma? How do they compare, should I just bite the bullet or get a used Nikon lens? I have a sigma art prime lens but have read mixed reviews comparing the Nikon with the sigma 70-200…
Mark Connors – Question about shooting portraits for couples. What would be the best way for me to get a good shot of them if I want the guy for example to lean in and whisper in her ear or if I want to get a laughing shot but don’t want them to hold completely still and look stiff, just more natural and I can just fire away. Would I use back button focus with continuos shooting, One shot Autofocus with continuous shooting or AI servo with continuous shooting?
Jonathan Betancur – Im looking to add another camera body to my arsenal of gear, as well as a lens. So with this post id like to ask if anyone knows any of the pro and cons of the FUJI xpro2 and of the FUJI Xt2, also how do they differ from each other?

    Sandy Dorau

I’m going to tread lightly here, because I know this is a hot-button issue for a people, and I certainly don’t want to sound like I’m bashing anyone’s brand.
I can only speak for myself and my experiences.
Customer service is a really big deal to me, so I switched from Canon to Nikon after a really bad experience with their camera repair department.
So last month, when I needed to send a lens to Nikon for repair, I had a tremendous amount of anxiety about it.
I pre-emptively rented a lens, and kind of expected the worst based on my experience with Canon.
But boy, was I wrong. I dropped the lens off at UPS on a Friday, and got it back the VERY next Friday. Exactly ONE WEEK?!
I talked to two customer service reps from Nikon, once to confirm they received it, and once to pay for the repair, and they were both so nice and accommodating. Seriously night-and-day from my experience with Canon.
The reason I want to share this is with everyone is because I felt like I was lost when I needed to repair my camera the first time. I didn’t know what to do, or how the system worked. Now, knowing what I know, I really feel like switching to Nikon was a really good move for me.

    Questions:

Jaimie Hoff – I just watched the Lightroom Medic video and I think it is going to help me so much, I just have one question that I don’t think talked about unless I missed it, and that was how to organize your exported JPGs. So I was curious how everyone does this. Thanks in advance!

Robby Saint – Nick Page or anyone – what recommendations do you have on specific Wacom tablets? There are alot of different ones. I would use it for photoshop and since I’m a physics teacher, I’d work problems out in PowerPoint so the students can watch and save my work.
I have searched but can’t find what the improve photography community prefers for metal prints. Who do you use for metal prints?
Has anyone ever taken Golf Course photos? If so how much interest was the course it self interested in them or the players there? Was thing it may be something.
Alan Combs – What are your thoughts on the Lightroom face recognition? It seems to be really slow for me and would take a long time to go back through them all.

    Nick
    Picking on your weaknesses

Its easy to focus on what your already good at, but to see true improvement, you have to focus on what you suck at
I find myself buying tons of landscape processing tutorials, but what I really need, is to improve my portrait posing
Just like any ability or sport, focus on strengthening your weaknesses and you will be a better all around photographer and business owner.

    Outsourcing

I feel like we as photographers try to be everything. Web developers, marketers, CPAs, etc. I started to see that I was spending more time researching how to be better at those things than actually taking photographs.
So I decided to bite the bullet and outsource what I hate doing the most, which is marketing and self-promotion. I have a really hard time with SEO, SEM, and social media.
Luckily, I already knew a part-time photographer that also did marketing for her day job. She had 15+ years marketing experience (compared to my zero years), and even though I didn’t think I could afford her, But we worked out a deal and she has helped me SO MUCH over the last few weeks.
She set up a plan for me with my email marketing, social media calendar, SEM, SEO, and is really drilling me to start blogging, which I never, ever, want to do. So I needed someone to push me a bit. All of this is launching soon and I’m feeling very excited about it.
My marketing person is named Barb, and she can be found at: sem.barbdavidsphotography.com. I told her I would be talking about her on the podcast, and she offered to give a free “Paid Search or SEO audit” to the first 5 listeners that contact her.
Nick and Jim, do you outsource anything? Editing I imagine is a popular one, but what else could be doing to free up more time to do what we love instead of what we hate?
