  • 10 Years. 10 Lessons.

    Send us Fan Mail

    10 years. 10 Lessons.

Monday will mark 3,642 days since we opened the doors at Frank & Maven.

Some people call that a decade. But to say “a decade” on a day like today would be to brush over it too quickly.

The truth is that it was 3,642 days of showing up, leveling up, and at times, shaking up. The ride has been wild and wonderful.

Today, I’d like to share 10 things I’ve learned along the way.

    1. Love your people. Culture tries to trick us into thinking that success belongs to the leader. It does not. The people that have been placed on your path; the ones who convince you that you can do it, the ones to jump in to help, the ones who reel you in, and the ones who love you despite your hiccups and flaws… it belongs to them. So pour into them. Listen to them daily. Make it your highest and first goal to serve them, especially when it costs you big. And thank god for them often.

    2. Go back to your POM (always). Look— things are going to get whacky. Distractions and demands are going to pull you under. People you thought you could count on are going to let you down. You’re going to wake up some days unhappy with where this has all drifted you. The problems right in front of you are going to try and pull away from the biggest problem you set out to tackle; don’t let them. Go back to the moment you were pissed off enough to start this thing (aka your pissed-off moment)! Get in touch with the world you set out to create and ask, “How can I remove everything that isn’t getting me to that goal?”

    3. Drive around the block. Your wife, your kids, and your dog have been thinking of you all day. They’ve been waiting for you to show back up so you can hear what they’ve been up to. And so you can share what you’ve been up to. But often, you are so overstimulated from 9 hours of work that you forget the most important moment of your day; the moment you greet them back at home. Drive around the block before you walk in. Radio off. Phone down. Separate your two worlds and imagine what the people you love most deserve to see, hear, and feel when you walk in the door.

    4. Tiny Moves > Big Moves. The world puts big, bold moves on a pedestal. Big promises, big spending, and big changes will get you lots of attention, but they will never really take you anywhere. Tiny moves, however, will knock down even the most massive goals and dreams. Show up every day, at the same time, in the same way, to move the ball forward, even if it’s only an inch. The more consistent you are, the more efficient you become, and the greater the impact you will make.

    5. ‘Yes’ is a dangerous word. If you are even remotely talented at something, people are going to show up with opportunities for you. You are going to be so thrilled to do the work that you never stop to consider the energy, time, communication, and true expense of completing the task with excellence. This won’t be a problem for your first 10, 20, or even 50 opportunities. But sooner or later, you’re going to realize how much you’re forced to compromise. It comes down to the quality of the work vs the quality of your life. Be careful what you say ‘yes’ to!
    6. Two ears, one mouth. You will never regret the words, “Tell me more.” Most people know the answers to their problems, they just need you to listen to them, listen some more, repeat back what you think you heard, and ask, “Is that all?” and “How can I help?” Millions of marriages would thrive, friendships would be restored, and clients would be saved if we could all do this more.

    7. Bacteria only grow in stagnant water. Regardless of your passion, success, or good intentions, people never stay bought-in “just because.” If you let your waters get too still for too

  • Your POM

    Send us Fan Mail

    A system that is broken.

    An industry that is boring.

    A service that lacks authenticity.

A group of people that are suffering.

An outcome that is too out of reach for well-deserving people.

    Many people see these things.

Many think to themselves, “it just ain’t right.”

But you, my friend, are the only one who will get out of bed and do something about it.

You are the one that has been called to make a new and better world…

You are the one who has been consumed by the problem, and it will not leave you alone.

And against all of the odds, against the opinions of your well-meaning friends, and the financial risks that try to back you down…

You won’t go on any longer without taking action.

This is your “pissed-off moment.” And it is the most important moment in your entrepreneurial  journey.

Your POM brings you face-to-face with the mission you are called to do.

It’s the war God already knows you will win.

In this moment, your purpose is clear, your fears are irrelevant, and your passion radiates with the intensity of the North Star.

10 years ago a friend of mine had his first POM.

He saw struggling entrepreneurs with golden hearts who were falling short, frustrated, and confused with marketing.

He experienced his own confusion, frustration, and lack of confidence. He experienced his own failed dreams.

And he became genuinely angry at all of the things that weren’t working.

    The risk was real.
    The money was tight.
    The doubters were plenty.

But none of those were louder than the caged lion in his soul.

And so, on faith, conviction, and his wife’s humble teacher salary as their only safety net, they started Frank & Maven.

We are proud to say that we’ve helped thousands of people like you confidently grow legendary businesses.

We’re proud to say we have a plan to help tens of thousands more.

But today, I want to ask you:

What lion is caged up inside you?

What do you know for certain should be better?

    What is your pissed-off moment?

Your mission doesn’t have to be starting a company (it probably won’t be).

It may be running for office, starting a ministry, writing, speaking, or showing up as a volunteer.

It may be standing up to someone holding power over you.

It may be writing a check.

It may be becoming a coach to someone.

It may be breaking an addiction, habit, or bond that has been holding you back.

I couldn’t possibly know what beast resides in your soul.

    But you do.

He’s pissed off. And it’s time to let him out.

    Cheers.

    PS-

A week from Monday, Brandon & Valerie will release a special podcast episode talking all about the highs and lows of that journey and what’s next. We hope you’ll tune in and take a trip down the road of wins, losses, and lessons learned!

  • Go To The Race

    Go to the Race

Thirty years ago he peered down two roads.

One lead to a professional career in motorsports.

One lead back home to help his family start their manufacturing business.

Many of his friends chose the path of horsepower and high octane. One of them even climbed the ranks to become a NASCAR champion.

But though his talents would have granted him great odds at making it big, he chose the path of entrepreneurism and honor by showing up for his mom and dad.

That road led to a different kind of success; Today he leads the highest-performing arm of a 500 million dollar company. His family is beautiful and life is good.

But despite his victories down the road less traveled, he couldn’t help but long for the raceway every time he heard the squeal of a tire and the crackling of exhaust pass him on the street.

    Until last weekend.

He finally scratched a thirty-year itch by making an appearance at the world’s largest super kart racing event at Daytona International Speedway.

He rented a kart, paid the entry fee, and took the track as a no-name amateur, against 38 professionals.

After a few laps, it was clear his instincts never left him. Becoming one with his machine, he shredded the label of a “nobody,” and secured a 5th place finish against some of the best in the nation.

That’s what 30 years of bottled-up infatuation will do. But he wasn’t regretful for a second. He knew that every move he’d made, and every sacrifice he’d given brought him precisely back to this moment. And I know he’d tell you it was sweeter than any victory he could have imagined.

    You know what else?

He would tell you that a similar victory is available to you, too.

My buddy Rich never stopped to second-guess his career decision.

He never wasted time wondering, “What if.”

    And you shouldn’t either.

But he did have the courage to pull an old dream out of the closet and live it again.

    And you definitely should too.

Has the glimmer of a past passion been flashing signals your way?

Is there a forgotten pursuit whispering for you to return?

    Follow that call, my friend.

    Pull out the old guitar.

    Dust off the scrapbooks.

    Lace up your basketball sneakers.

    Dial your old flight instructor.

    Flip on the sewing machine.

Pull a brush across the canvas.

    Wet a line.

    Climb a rock.

    Grip the throttle.

Spend the money, no matter how unreasonable someone else may tell you it is.

Come back to that part of you.

    There is life there.

    There is joy there.

There is the realization that everything has led you back to this perfect moment.

And we could all use a few more life, joy, and perfect moments.

So what are you waiting for?

    Cheers,

    BW

  • Dead Reckoning

    Send us Fan Mail

    Dead Reckoning.

If you repeated this year five times again, would you be where you want to be?

If you continued the same habits…

If you kept the same company…

If you read the same amount…

If you spent the same time with family…

If you went to church the same amount of Sundays…

If you moved your body as many days…

If you drank the same amount of water…

If you held the same number of grudges…

If you showed up with the same mindset…

If you invested with the same intensity…

Would you get where you’d like to go?

In my pilot training I learned a navigational technique known as “dead reckoning.”

It means that we “pick our course, based on our last known position.”

You only need three things to dead reckon:

     1. A desired destination
     2. A trusted map
     3. Checkpoints along the way

Do you know where are you are headed?

Do you have a trusted map? A guide? A mentor? A model to emulate?

    And… what’s your current position?

    It doesn’t matter if you’re 1, 10, or 100 degrees off course…

You can always adjust the stick and the rudder as needed, my friend.

    Your destination is waiting.

    Your destination is worthy.

2024 is going to be a tremendous year.

    Cheers,

    BW

  • It's Available to All of Us

    Send us Fan Mail

Through the victories of your last 51 weeks…

Through the challenges of your days, your weeks, and your life...

Through people and relationships you are grateful for…

Through the ones that confuse and hurt you…

Through the things you are certain and confident in…

Through the fears and troubles you know lie ahead of you…

Through it all, there is a joy, and a peace that is available to you.

It’s available to all of us.

Christmas is our reminder that there has always been good news.

Good news that love always wins.

Good news that no matter our circumstances, we have a hope and an example to follow.

     His name is Jesus.

He dissolved chaos with his presence.

He created peace with his words.

He inspired kindness with his actions.

He overcame impulse with his choices.

He reminded us of everything mankind is capable of with his life.

     If we just choose.

It’s an overwhelming thought to believe that God of the universe would make himself available to you and I.

But, observe what happens when you just remain simply open to that thought for a moment.

If we could channel the greatest source of peace, love, kindness, and health into our relationships…

    Our business…

    Our family…

    Our frustrations…

Our pursuit of happiness and fulfillment…

     What would happen?

The truth is that we can. Every day. Every moment. Every victory and every challenge.

We can embrace and the love, peace, and way of life he brought for us.

And it always makes everything better.

I hope you are celebrating the good news this week.

Merry Christmas to you and your family!
