Your Work, Your Play, Your Love and Your Religion
At your next stoplight, look to your left and your right.
There’s a good chance you’ll see someone with their shoulders to their ears and eyebrows pulled down over their nose.
In your next grocery line, look in front of and behind you. There’s another good chance you’ll find the same person.
And if you didn’t see one of these people, go look in the mirror because there’s a good chance it’s you.
1 in 3 American adults right now claim that “stress is completely overwhelming most days.”
Does that concern you as much as it does me?
Would you like to do something about it?
James A. Michener changed my life when he wrote the words:
“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he's always doing both. ”
If you find the clarity and inspiration in these words as I have, let’s enter this Labor Day weekend with a mission:
1. Return to your work next week and make a game out of something.
It could be how many smiles you give someone. It could be how many tasks you try to get off your plate in one hour. It could be seeing how many days in a row you can call up one person and thank them for who they are.
Whatever you do, make a game. Have some fun. Find some gratitude.
2. Show some love to someone who doesn’t deserve it.
The hateful clerk. The anxious receptionist. The demanding boss.
Show them the higher power of love, and give them a noticeably generous gesture, or compliment, or “thank you,” at a noticeably undeserving time.
You will, in fact, create your own path to being a master in the art of living.
And you’ll create a path for them to be one too.
Happy Labor Day my friend.
Take it easy on yourself.
Cheers.

You attract what you are.
Specifically, you attract what people think you are.
If you want to be noticed, give others more attention.
If you want to be at peace, let go of your grudges and be more curious.
If you want to earn more money, show more value.
If you want to be more confident, put in the time to study.
If you want to find the perfect partner, become the person worthy of a perfect partner.
If you want more grace, give more grace.
Talk is cheap. Venting about what you want will only deliver more of the same result, because you are programming your mind to justify and expect bad things.
But when you stop to ask how you can give more of the thing you want:
- Generosity
- Patience
- Validation
- Clarity
- Kindness
- Thoughtfulness
- Confidence
- Love
AND you commit to doing those things consistently, regardless of your results at first…
It may take a while, but your world will eventually have no choice but to give those things back to you.
Don’t quit. Don’t keep score.
Just wake up every day with the goal to give, and live in the abundance you were created to live in.

“Do you need me to listen, or do you want help solving a problem?”
I’m convinced this question would save a lot of marriages.
Why?
Because the void for emotional validation far outweighs the need for logical explanation in relationships of trust.
All day long your person has been surrounded by people they are performing for, keeping their guard up, and checking boxes.
At the end of the day their logical brain has been exhausted. More importantly, they’ve had a dozen interactions where they don’t feel quite understood.
It adds up.
And when they are finally around you - one of the few people they’re allowed to be real with - the floodgates open and they seek resolve to all of the little misalignments of their day.
In that moment their need is to be heard, not helped.
And if you fail to fulfill that need you become part of the problem.
Every successful couple learns this.
But guess what?
This is not just a marriage equation.
Any psychologist, neuroscientist, and professional life coach will tell you that validation is the absolute fastest way to earn trust.
Successful ad writers also know that this is crucial. Without it, you are toast.
Until someone believes that you are capable of seeing the world from their point of view, they simply can not feel that your solution has relevance. You haven’t earned it yet.
You have no permission to persuade.
The fastest way to prove you understand them is to listen and repeat back what you thought you heard them say, without any of your stupid “spin” on it.
Then ask “is there anything else?”
After they know that you know how they feel, there is a high likelihood they’ll be open to your idea.
But if you skip this step, there’s a 100% chance your words will go in one ear and out the other, regardless of your intentions.
Dean Graciozi and Teddy Roosevelt said it best:
“People don’t buy when they understand you. They buy when they feel understood.”
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Are you finding yourself in a tizzy with someone you care about?
Do you have a solution to a problem, but aren’t getting buy in?
It’s probably time to take a deep breath, shut up, and listen. Then listen some more.
I predict you’ll be asked for your opinion sometime after that.
You got this.

“The cheapest thing you can give somebody is a smile.”
If I heard it once, I heard it thousand times growing up.
In the fewest of words, my dad would remind us of our potential, make us laugh, and give us a different outlook on our day. I’m not sure he’s ever quite understood what a superpower that is.
But I do. And today, I think you should too.
I spent an agonizing amount of time in four airport terminals this week. But for as bad as that sounds, I was reminded of an important lesson my dad taught me years ago.
Fast food, busy bathrooms, and packed planes aren’t common places for inspiration.
But that’s exactly where I found it.
I watched Dre the Janitor demonstrate more joy in his work than any other professional I worked with all week.
I watched Kayla the chicken checker-outer shine a light on every crabby customer that checked through her cash register.
And I watched Tina the TSA agent bless hundreds of tired travelers over and over with the same enthusiastic “good morning!” without losing steam.
Their smiles were genuine. Their demeanor was grateful. And their mission was unquestionable:
While everyone else around them was working their shift, they were shifting their work.
Dre, Kayla, and Tina didn’t earn a dime more by being awesome in those moments.
But I’ll bet you can.
When people feel good:
Those are the best results you could ever hope for in marketing.
And it won’t cost you a dime.
Questions:
Are things a little harder than they were this time last year?
Are you feeling the grind?
Would you like to do something about it?
Smile, my friend.
And help your people smile.
Good things are right around the corner.
