Live bands are a big part of many events. They can compliment an occasion or they can actually BE the primary draw; the event themselves. You have to be ready for anything and tailoring your delivery to each scenario is critical. In this episode, I recount at least 4 different situations that required a different approach so it's important that you take note of why they differed and why they were necessary in each scenario. I discuss passive vs active eye contact and how to use it to your advantage. I discuss a different microphone technique that we haven't touched on yet in this series but it is important. And I breakdown the many differences between the indoor vs the outdoor concert setting. Aside from the obvious, you will be surprised at how many missed details can lead to potential disaster for the event, and therefore for you as the Master of Ceremonies. But hey, that's what makes what we do so exciting, isn't it?
Tomorrow we cover the many myriad scenarios that a live band or concert event could present. I was just booked for another 2 concert style events so I will have a fresh perspective to share. Be here for "The Concert Event" tomorrow on MC with MEi
The Corporate Christmas Party does not need to be the gong-show you dread or have seen in R-rated movies. This is that gift at the end of the year from whomever you are employed by as a thank you for the year's efforts. There a myriad reasons why this is as critical an event as there is; and the irony is, most who put these on may not even be aware themselves of why. I worked for a brilliant leader who once in passing told me why it was so important to him that his company feel enough to attend and then have a great time. I never forgot his words and it has gone in to EVERY company holiday party I have been responsible for. We will laugh a lot and learn a lot this week. Please enjoy responsibly :).
We are gearing up for one of the most critical events of the year that we may be called on to handle; The Corporate Christmas Party. Coming this Monday, I reveal why it is as critical as it is, and even those who coordinate it, may not even know this. We will all find out together and then move forward to making it the event it deserves to be.
This is THE single most neglected major event where hiring someone professional to be held accountable for the outcome of the end result is concerned. All that time, all that money, all that marketing, all that reputation; all that opportunity to maximize fundraising potential, all lost! It won't be this way when a professional trained and experienced Master of Ceremonies is hired to make it all work and exceed expectations. This is THE episode that fund-raising committees and chair-people need to download and listen to. AND, if you are an aspiring Master of Ceremonies, or you need to master this type of event, we hold no punches here this week. Buckle up; it's a deep dive with this one!
I realized that Episode 15 had not been loaded to Podcast.co, when Monday came and went and I did not have an episode to promote on my social feeds (twitter.com/MCwithMEi). I apologize for the mis-step as I continue to evolve with this new world I've opened up for myself. This project; "MC with Mei" is as much an instructional course as it is a podcast. So THIS Monday (Labour day in Canada and the USA) I present a very critical episode on the Charity Fundraiser. It is jammed with tips, tricks and techniques that you can not afford to miss. PLUS! It has a very important message to both emcees AND charity event organizers, Chairs and committees that will bring both sides together for a relationship that benefits most those for whom the money and awareness is being raised. Join me this Monday, September 2nd for "The Charity Fundraiser".
The Charity Fundraiser! This is the SINGLE most misunderstood public function....by those who plan them! Organizers of a charity fundraiser know they need to raise money for a cause, critical funds for a cause or initiative they care deeply about. To do this, they need a lot of people to attend. For people to attend, they need a draw: food, prizes, fun, entertainment; and they need it held in a place that everyone recognizes: ballroom, convention centre, open park with tents. There is a ton of planning and expense poured into a plan and mechanism to raise as much as they can to pay the expense and raise the money and awareness they planned for. BUT many fall off the cliff here; they plan to spend $0 on the ONE person who they depend on to orchestrate this event to fully maximize it's earning potential. As a trained, experienced and accomplished Master of Ceremony, we know the whole universe of unseen techniques and proven tactics to accomplish 2 CRITICAL goals: 1-maximize the potential of the night and 2- (never considered by most) maximize the potential of return ticket sales for the following year. Let's master this!
This night means everything to the organizer and the company they represent. For any company to dedicate this amount of financial, resource and time expense means that they want this perfect. This is from the company, FOR the company. However, still with this much at stake, oftentimes these committees will have either the company president host it or they will get "that person" from within who may be office-place comedian to act as the master of ceremonies. They find fast that there is a whole universe "behind the mic" that they didn't count on. That is where we come in! BUT we have to be heads and shoulders better than all other alternatives; this week we find out how.
In order for an awards gala to be a priority to any organization, it is planned and coordinated from the heart by a collection of people who are selfless and caring. However, nothing is as crushing, deflating and humiliating to these organizers than when they put all this heart, love, money and planning into this event and the ONE person whom they have selected to take control of its flow, is (free) under qualified, miscalculated and/or totally ill-prepared for the reality of the scope.
Awards events mean A LOT to those staging them so it is critical that we bring our A-game and also become part of their fabric. We must feel as they do about the event, the nominees and the recipients.
Awards events can be as simple as an afternoon in a banquet hall, to massive 1000+person black tie galas in a grand hotel ballroom; but at their root, they are celebrations of people who have achieved excellence. We must be excellent, that's why they hire us to do what we do.
The corporate engagement is the most prolific, sought after and actually available. The bigger the company, the more regular they hold events like this and they therefore know the value of qualified "role players". But you have to know what you are doing and you have to exceed expectations or your time with this client will be short. You know the old saying: "what do you get for that person who has everything"? Well same optics apply here; "how can I impress a committee or board who have likely seen it all already"? Believe me "THEY AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET"! Subscribe today and let's open some eyes!

It seems the Master of Ceremony is always the last thing every function remembers to plan for. It is frightening how many times shows start late, run long and are otherwise mismanaged when it comes…
