Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSPam Henry Smith is an American author from Hot Springs, Arkansas in the U.S. She grew up in Pine Bluff and following her parent’s divorce she and her sister Paula spent a lot of time with both sets of grandparents and the wonderful relationships they had with them is really the backbone to the tale in this debut book. Pam’s father was a successful businessman who was probably a workaholic, but still had time for his daughters. Her mother to whom Pam was close to, worked in finance and flourished in her own right. I think having chatted to Pam that both she and her sister inherited traits from their parents and both sets of grandparents which has made them both survivors.
Pam taught for for thirty-two-years at elementary level something she both enjoyed and excelled at, this enthusiasm for education she has passed on to all her students plus her three children and now grandchildren with whom she has a very close bond with.
Divorce is tough for kids having to deal with a completely new set of rules, something Pam and Paula found hard to adjust to, nevertheless adjust they did, but for Pam it taught her to be tough, independent with a loving caring attribute to her nature, this enduring quality she developed she has passed on, not only to her own children and grandchildren to who as I have already hinted at she cherishes wholeheartedly, but equally all of her students she taught over the years, in particular encouraging young girls to be strong when pursuing their choices in life.
Retirement means different things to different people, for Pam it’s the opportunity to follow new adventures and now that she has dipped her toe into the world of writing, who knows what will be coming down the line, hopefully more books. Pam has always been a strong advocate for literacy and maybe now that she has more time to devote to this passion of hers, we’ll see her flourish as a successful author. Watch this space is all I say.
So, let’s have a sneak preview as to what this debut book of hers is all about.

The Book
This is a children’s book and depending on the individual child’s reading ability a book for them to read themselves or with a parent/grandparent. Either way for me it’s a great bedtime read. The author in her interview notes to me sees the book as a book for all generations to simply enjoy. So, what is the book about? Well, it’s the story of a brightly coloured Amazon parrot called Mack, and it’s a true tale. The story is delightfully told over twenty-four pages against the backdrop of bright wonderful illustrations that really do set the scene. The narrative starts on the journey home from a summer trip to Disneyland in 1964 when the author’s father bought a parrot both for the author and her sister plus grandparents. Mack brought a lot of joy to the family, equally frustration, for Mack wasn’t to everyone’s taste, particularly grandad Guy as Mack’s incessant chattering often got on his nerves. It’s really a story of how an adorable pet can tighten the bonds of family relations, particularly grandchildren and grandparents. The author herself spent a lot of time with her grandparents of both sets and to this day still cherishes those special times with them and of course Mack the Amazon parrot with all his cheek and bravado.
The book is a special book for grandchildren and grandparents to enjoy those treasured moments that leave us all with an indelible mark on our lives.
