This week we continue our Generosity Series as we sit down with Men of Iron advocate Corby Ziegler. All this month we are talking about Biblical generosity and what it means to be generous. Pete grew up in Brooklyn with a single mom, because of a dad who was never present. Vinnie grew up in a Christian home but it was a home that felt very legalistic. To Vinnie the Bible felt like "a big book of no." Vinnie saw Christians as hypocrites, there was no love, it was all about rules. At 16 Vinnie wanted to go his own way so he moved to New York City to do comedy, and that's where he met his wife Monica. A couple years later Monica ended up getting cast as Sarah in Abraham as Sarah at Sight and Sound Theatres in Lancaster, PA. Vinnie's hometown. Vinnie was furious, worried that her knew role at Sight and Sound would draw her back towards Christianity. It was during this season at Sight and Sound that Monica rededicated her life to the Lord.On his way to visit Monica in Lancaster, Vinnie was involved in a near-death motorcycle accident. An EMT on the scene told Vinnie, "You need to thank the good Lord you are alive, because He saved your life today." It was after this accident that things started to shift for Vinnie."In my room by myself, I made my peace with God. I said I believe you are who you say you are. I have some issues, especially when it comes to Christian men, but I am reluctantly yours."Vinnie's journey of spiritual growth began when he moved back to Lancaster, PA. "Something changed in that space, and so much had to do with the men that surrounded me. These men represented Jesus and Christianity in a way that was the polar opposite of what he experienced growing up in church. Vinnie would go on to become the children's pastor at Victory Church and eventually was introduced to Men of Iron. Mentorship is iron sharpening iron, it's the clanging of steel, it's not easy. That character is what we are after, but we don't always want to do the hard work to get it. I think pride keeps men from asking for help from other men. Lou grew up Catholic, in a great family with great parents. He got away from his faith during his young adult years, until he met his wife Melissa."I thought I had faith through my upbringing but realized I didn't have a relationship with Jesus."Melissa challenged Lou in his faith and had the hard conversations he needed to hear. After one of those hard phone calls, Lou hung up mad, but God spoke to him in that moment. They ended up getting married and got plugged into a local church. Lou credits the people and men he met at Victory Church for changing his life. A good friend of Lou's suggested he go through Men of Iron, that it would be great opportunity to grow in his faith."I've been involved with Men of Iron for 12 years, as a mentor and a protege, it's done so much for me that I can't say thank you enough."Lou wants men to know that it doesn't matter what your struggle is, there is a mentor for you, you need someone to walk through this with you. For 12 years Garret was the CEO of Men of Iron, leading the organization and building a strong foundation for where Men of Iron is today. Garret grew up in the church and accepted Christ at an early age. At the age of 9, at a Royal Rangers camp, Garret felt the presence of the Holy Spirit for the first time. Responding to an altar call, he heard God say to him, "I'm going to use you in a big way." Despite decades of turmoil and counseling working through the trauma of sexual abuse and molestation at an early age, Garret looks back at this moment at Royal Rangers as instrumental in his faith journey.As a younger sibling, Garret always struggled with feeling like he had to "measure up" to what his siblings had done."That became my mentality with my faith, I have to earn God's respect, I have to earn God's love. I had this warped reality of who God was, that God wasn't my Father, I just had to impress Him."In college is when Garret started to take on his faith as his own. Garret credits a college professor, Doctor Shane Johnson as the first man in his life who showed him what it meant to be a man. "He was harsh, he was firm but it was always the truth." This was a major turning point in Garret's life, that woke him up to the fact that he wasn't living the right way.Mentorship isn't that hard, it's just making yourself available to others, Doc Johnson made himself available to Garret. In 2011, on his honeymoon, Garret felt an overwhelming sense from God that something was going to change. Later in 2011 the Founder of Men of Iron, Garret's brother-in-law Bryan, approached Garret to lead Men of Iron as the CEO. As soon as Garret made this move God anointed him with this passion for men getting it right, and leading their families well.Mentorship changed Garret's life and he wants to provide that to as many men as possible. He believes that mentorship is so vital, because as men we screw it up on our own. "You can find someone that has more knowledge and experience, they've been there and done that." There is so much we can glean from mentorship, but we have to take a posture of humility and say I don't have it figured out but I'm willing to do what it takes. Josh grew up in a Christian home with faith at the forefront, but it was sports that he worshipped. "I lived for whatever athletic season I was in. What I was worshipping was temporal, and I was living for the next moment and competition." God got ahold of Josh as a freshman in college, and that's where his faith journey truly began. As Josh gave his life to Jesus he believed that sports would have to go to the back burner, but God had other plans."I began using sports as a platform to point people to Jesus, build character and make disciples." - Josh BeersJosh dives into the importance of mentorship in the sports world and in his own life. "In my own walk I am always looking for that man who is a few years ahead of me and asking them questions so they can sharpen me." In the sports world players have coaches who are teaching them, mentoring them and sharpening them to take it to the next level. Iron sharpening iron is all about what does the next step look like in your journey. Where can you find that man, that mentor to sharpen you? Most men who are struggling to find a mentor are not intentionally pursuing it or are afraid to ask. We all need people in our lives who see things in us that we don't see ourselves. The enemy wants us to be isolated, we need to break through that shell and admit we need help. It's actually a sign of strength to admit that we need a mentor. In this episode, Kyle shares his incredible journey of wrestling and faith. At a young age Kyle wanted to be an Olympic Champion. Wrestling was everything. Kyle shares how his wrestling career shaped his understanding of God."Through wrestling I found out who God was and who Jesus is." Kyle is a 2016 Olympic Gold Medal winning wrestler. He is the youngest Olympic gold medalist and youngest World Champion in American wrestling history. He was a 3-time NCAA National Champion at Ohio State with a career record of 75-5 and ended his college career as the first and only wrestler to win the NCAA, World and Olympic championships as a collegiate athlete.After moving to the Olympic Training Center as a senior in High School, Kyle started going to Bible studies at the request of coaches and continued attending them as a freshman at Ohio State. Despite his desire to grow in his faith, his identity was still wrapped up in his wrestling accomplishments.A heart breaking loss in the NCAA Finals as a freshman sent Kyle into a state of depression and ultimately led to him surrendering it all to Jesus.
