In this episode I was lucky enough to interview former professional cricketer Tom Scollay from Cricket Mentoring.
Since he joined my cricket club in 2018, I've had the pleasure of getting to know and learn from Tom Scollay. Tom is the founder of Cricket Mentoring, a business he started in order to help cricketers become the best players they can be. And this is something that Tom is very passionate about, as a former professional cricketer himself, he has a great depth of knowledge that he shares with his community. But it is not just all technical. Tom values the importance of mindset very highly and believes that this is the reason his professional career didn't flourish as he would've liked. Therefore, he has learnt from his experiences and wants to share these learnings with as many people as he can. Cricket mentoring currently has just under 100 thousand followers on Instagram, 42.6 thousand subscribers on YouTube and 25.6 likes on Facebook. In this episode we discuss how Tom first got into cricket and the challenges he faced while chasing his dream to become a professional cricketer. We also talked about how Cricket Mentoring began and how it evolved.
My biggest takeaways from this episode are:
•Scolls talked a lot about hard work and persistence. As you would all know, hard work is something I'm massive on. He talked about how he has a quote unquote "Hardest worker in the room mentality". By doing this, Scolls believes you have a much greater chance of succeeding and achieving your goal whatever it may be.
•Scolls is also very big on backing yourself, trusting yourself and believing in yourself. We discussed that this is lacking in a lot of the athletes he works with. And quite simply, if you don't back yourself, the battle is already half lost. On the contrary, a strong belief in your abilities and trusting the process holds you in a great position to smash your goals and live your dreams.
•And lastly, my third biggest takeaway was how Scolls employs a get it done attitude. Whatever the task, have a get it done mentality. Leave no stone unturned, believe in yourself and do it. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. If you never ask, the answer will always be no. So, you've just got to go out there and get it done.
