Last week I got gas in my eye during an operation. Maybe some of it went to my brain and lodged there because this meditation is tinged with the colour of an unhinged mind. It goes like this. I knew nothing as a child. I was too stupid to learn anything. So I turned inwardly to the beautiful world of the imagination, where deities reign supreme. The deities that carry me through the darkest storms. (And listen out for my gorgeous clock chiming.)

Before I say I love you I must love you. otherwise I couldn't say it. It's a paradox. and it's the same with any faith. Saying what you believe strengthens what you believe. But you can only say it if you believe it. This about this podcast as a consolation for the winter time. Despondency is what we need to avoid. And only faith can help.

Christmas is over. A stretch in the day. And the mind gone soggy and foggy from the winter festival. So I want to offer you this meditation on the wandering mind.

Yes my mind wanders from talking cats and childhood crushes, to a numb leg and lonely nuns on the streets of Warsaw. This is a meditation I used in the book Chest Pain to illustrate the drifting mind, and how it attaches itself to religious images for shelter, just like a boat in a storm tends towards a harbour.

Even though it's Christmas, I always find this a lovely time to reflect on the riches of Lamrim, and the Tibetan philosophy of Je Tsong Kapa, (15th C) who refined the complexity of Buddhist teachings into a simple pathway to wisdom. 

The Gelugpa tradition which he founded, still flourishes in the person of his Holiness the Dalai Lama, and in the person of the Panchen Otrul Lama who resides at Jampaling, the Tibetan Buddhist Centre in west Cavan.

Tibetan philosophy is a jewel tree of wisdom, sparkling like our Christmas tree, sending rays of wisdom in the ten directions through the universe.
