  • As reported crime falls, what's working and what's not? We ask a community organizer and the State's Attorney's Office
As of August 1, homicides in Baltimore are down 24.3% compared to 2024.
Mayor Brandon Scott says says many different sources deserve credit for the reduction, including the police department and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE).
But what role does the City State’s Attorney’s Office play in curbing the violence? Additionally, how are community groups working directly with neighborhoods and residents to make the city safer?
Today, Midday gets two perspectives on the work of curbing gun violence. We hear from Hassan Giordano, the Chief of External Affairs for the City's State's Attorney's Office, and Brandon Wilson, Manager of the Stop the Beef Hotline at violence intervention organization, We Our US.
    WYPR's Gabe Ortis guest hosts.

  • Governor Moore criticizes deploying National Guard in D.C.
Gov. Wes Moore joins Midday to share his perspective on the deployment of National Guard and additional officers to patrol the streets of Washington.
In a White House press conference on Monday, President Trump announced a federal takeover of the Washington, D.C. police department and the deployment of the National Guard, intending to restore order and public safety.
During his remarks, the President mentioned several cities, implying they have crime problems. He listed Baltimore, along with Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Oakland, saying, "We don't even mention that anymore, they're so far gone."
Moore continues to highlight the partnership between the state and the city to reduce gun violence in Baltimore.

  • Everyone is talking about utility costs. What's behind the rise, and is relief on the way?
From the halls of the state capitol in Annapolis to the corner dive bar in Baltimore, it seems like everyone is talking about rising utility costs.
It is more expensive to turn the lights on, run air conditioning or bake cookies in the oven.
On June 1, Baltimore Gas & Electric, Delmarva Power and Pepco all raised their rates, yet again. The prices for gas and electricity have risen at a rate exceeding inflation.
Lawmakers have taken notice. So what’s the reason for these increases? And can Marylanders expect any relief?
My first guest today is David Lapp, who represents ratepayers at the Maryland Office of the People’s Counsel, an independent state agency that advocates for consumers.

Midday turns the spotlight to young people who have left childhood and are navigating the oftentimes confusing, treacherous path toward adulthood.
For those who run afoul of the law, the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services is tasked with their supervision and treatment.
Betsy Fox Tolentino is the new acting secretary of DJS. Last June, Gov. Wes Moore appointed her to replace Vincent Schiraldi.

Dr. Ashanti Woods, an award-winning pediatrician at Mercy Family Care Physicians in Baltimore, returns to Midday to discuss health and young people.
A disturbing report that was recently released by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia warns that mental health challenges, obesity, and infant and child mortality are all on the rise in the United States.
Woods will take your questions about your kids, and how to keep them healthy and thriving.
What do you need to know about vaccines? With school starting soon, vaccination rates for children are still lower than pre-COVID levels, although Maryland’s rates are slightly higher than the national average.
