Having been a professional athlete and having had friends who were professional athletes and now consulting professional athletes, I definitely have a lot to offer in terms of unique insights.
One of the biggest challenges athletes face is the invention of the internet and the amount of information that is available to athletes about themselves. Often while speaking to an athlete about their performance, they mention they will be tweeting or receiving messages on their performance in the game that occurred just a few minutes before. Clearly radio, TV and newspapers have been around for decades and have created messaging for athletes about their play, but now there is an excess of information athletes have to adjust to, which sends them messages about who they are and how the public is perceiving them. It is one thing to get booed in a game if you play poorly, but it is another thing to be booed electronically everywhere you go on social media. This requires a new level of being able to metabolize criticism and places added stress on athletes.
Another obstacle for athletes is the ease of exposure via technology. Every year, the overall talent in professional athletics is getting better. In the past, there was a small group of players who were scouted and competed, but because of advancements in technology and accessibility, every good or even decent player is identified, and everyone has an idea of who these athletes are, even in international recruiting. Now you have just about anyone showcasing, filming and posting their skillset or results on every social platform imaginable!
Sport and performance mindset coaching and sports psychology is really important because as you get to the highest level of any sport, so much of what happens is based on confidence and mental ability. Talent equalizes at the top, and the players who are able to mentally adjust and handle adversity are the ones who are the most successful.
Never let the fear of striking out get in your way. –Babe Ruth
The first thing athletes should know about sport psychology is actually what they should know about themselves. They should identify for themselves what they fear about facing the deficit in their game. Nobody wants to see their dirty laundry – areas of performance that need to be improved, but what sport and performance psychology is about is looking for strategies to be honest about what we can improve. Everybody, no matter if you’re a baseball player, trading on the stock market or a fire fighter, can improve.
No matter how good you are at what you do, you can always improve. The goal is always to keep getting better and to overcome the fear something new. For many years, athletes and people in general, have feared the idea of coaching, performance coaching, or psychology because they have felt like it would expose them as weak or expose them as someone not able to do it on your own......
