  • MOMocrats California Special: The Ballot Propositions
What's the deal with the ballot initiatives that purport to raise funds for education? Supporters of Proposition 32 claim that it would bar special interests from donating to campaign without loopholds -- opponents say that's a big fat lie. And what's the big fuss over labeling GMO foods?
The California MOMocrats weigh in on the state ballot -- the propositions, who is behind them and why that matters.

  • MOMocrats MOMochat: Decoding the Middle East
2012 was supposed to be all about the economy. That changed on September 11, when US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stephens and three other State Department workers were killed in an attack on our consulate offices in Bhengazi, as violence spread against other US embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world. The purported reason: an ultra-low budget, incendiary YouTube video produced in the United States and seemingly created to incite Muslim rage. Can the First Amendment live side-by-side in an increasingly global world connected via the Internet? How do we reconcile and prevent incidents such as this one from reoccurring?
Our guest this week is Mideast expert Dr. Laurie A, Brand, Professor of International Relations at the University of Southern California, where she directed the School of International Relations from 2006-2009 and the Center for International Studies from 1997-2000. Prior to joining the USC faculty in fall 1989, she was assistant director at the Institute for Palestine Studies, Washington, D.C. A four-time Fulbright scholar to the Middle East and North Africa, a Carnegie scholar 2008-10, and a Rockefeller Bellagio writing residency fellow for fall 2012, she is author of "Palestinians in the Arab World" (1988), "Jordan’s Inter-Arab Relations" (1994), "Women, the State and Political Liberalization" (1998), and "Citizens Abroad: States and Emigration in the Middle East and North Africa" (2006).

  • MOMocrats MOMochat: A Nation of Moochers
We have fewer than 50 days until the election, and while it is premature to write off Mitt Romney (not with all that superPAC power!), the man seems determined to choke himself on that silver spoon he was born with.

Romney began the week with yet another campaign reboot, hoping to distract reporters from asking questions about POLITICO's expose of disarray and disfunction within the campaign, including the kind of quotes that don't usually come out until AFTER a candidate has lost his election. He finished Monday with a hastily arranged press conference to respond to David Corn's bombshell release of a video secretly recorded at a $50,000 a plate campaign function.    The mission for Democrats is to keep the pressure on... and shift some energy and focus to downticket races. Polls this week show both Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Duckworth ahead. Cynematic and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss.   Also this week: the Chicago teachers strike is settled. What the issues are and how it relates to what is happening nationwide in the debate over public education.
